1. Why there is a need for a mother to breastfeed her baby at least 6 mos.
after birth?
- Before the baby reach six months old, breastfeed or mother’s milk is
advisable to give. Breastmilk is both food and drink for the baby. Through
drinking mother’s milk, it makes the baby healthy and it protects against
illness or any harm. In addition, a mother must avoid offering any kind of
foods to her baby because it can only cause diarrhea, which make her thin
and weak, and even be life threatening. With that, a baby below 6 months
have a sensitive stomach that’s why, breastfeeding is very important.
2. Enumerate and describe the different kind of reflexes.
- Reflexes are involuntary movements or actions. There are ten kinds of
reflexes in babies. These include the, sucking, swallowing, placing, tonic neck,
sleeping, Moro, Darwinian, Babinski, swimming and rooting.
 SUCKING – Sucking reflex is one of the significant reflexes the newborn has.
This sucking reflex develops when a baby is still in mother’s womb. As I
observed, some babies will start to suck their thumbs or hands. Further,
sucking reflex happens when the roof of a baby’s mouth is touched. The
baby will begin to suck when this area is stimulated, which helps with
nursing or bottle feeding.
 SWALLOWING - Swallowing reflex is one of the stages of the swallow which
is under reflexive or involuntary control. Milk that reaches the posterior
portion of the tongue will automatically swallowed by a baby. This kind of
reflex can be seen from birth to about four months.
 PLACING – Placing reflex is present in a newborn. When the mother holds
her baby in an upright position in front of bed or in table. They
automatically raise their foot to try to step onto the table, and they also
raise their hands.
 Tonic neck – Tonic reflex is also called “fencing reflex”. This reflex found in
newborn that is usually disappear around six months of age. In addition,
this reflex happens when a baby turned his or her head to one side, the arm
on that side stretches out and the opposite arm bends up at the elbow.
 STEPPING – Stepping reflex or walking reflex happens when the sole of the
foot is pressed against couch, the baby tries to walk. Essentially, the baby is
trying to take steps or dance. It persists as voluntary standing. This kind of
reflex is present from birth and only vanishes at approximately two to four
months.
 MORO – Moro reflex is also known as “startle reflex”. This reflex can be
seen or observed while the baby is still in the mother’s womb up to birth. It
will just start to disappear when the baby is around 3 months and totally
disappear between 4 and 6 months. Further, loud noises, intense light, and
sudden movements can trigger a baby’s Moro reflex. The baby will respond
by startling, extending their head backwards, raising their arms and legs up
into the air, crying, and then folding their arms and leg back in.
 DARWINIAN – Darwinian reflex is also called as “palmar grasp reflex”. This
happens when something tickles the inside of baby’s hand, a baby will
immediately close their fingers around it.
 BABINSKI – Babinski reflex or “plantar reflex”, which is stimulated when the
bottom of baby’s foot is touched. In response, the baby will extend upward
his or her big toe and the rest of the toes flare out. This normal reflex is
present from birth and lasts until the baby reached 2 years of age.
 SWIMMING – Swimming reflex involves placing an infant face down in a
pool of water. The infant will start to paddle and kick in a swimming
motion. This kind of reflex allows a baby to swim without being taught or
proper training.
 ROOTING – Rooting reflex is also known as “frontal release reflex”. This
reflex begins when the corner of the baby’s mouth is stroked or touched.
The baby will turn his or her head and open his or her mouth to follow and
root in the direction of the stoking. This helps the baby find the breast or
bottle to start feeding.
