DEFLECTION OF A SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM

(WITH CENTRAL LOADING)

AIM:
To conduct a deflection test on given simply supported beam subjected to central
concentrated load and to find young’s modulus of material of the beam (wood).

APPARATUS REQUIRED:
 Beam
 Scale
 Magnetic stand
 Dial gauge
 Support
 Vernier caliper

FORMULA:

E=

I= b12d
Where

Y=deflection of beam in mm

P=applied load in kg

l=length of beam

E=young’s modulus of material(Gpa)

I=moment of inertia of beam in mm

b=breadth of beam in mm

d=depth of beam in mmW

PROCEDURE:
 Beam is placed on the given support
 Distance between supports is adjusted for a specific length
 The beam is loaded at midpoint the deflection is noted from the dial
gauge
 The deflection for unloading condition is also noted
 The breadth and depth of the given beam is measured using vernier
caliper
 Using b,d,g values young’s modulus of given material is calculated
OBSERVATION:
Length of beam(l)= cm

Breadth of beam(b)= cm

Depth of beam(d)= mm

TABULATION:

g N Loading Unloading Mean m×10−3

RESULT:

The deflection test was conducted and young’s modulus of mild steel is
calculated.
