RULES TO WRITE AN ESSAY

• Don’t use contractions


• Divide the text in paragraphs (1 paragraph of introduction: most important part, the body of the
essay depends of the questions can be 2 or 3 paragraph and then the conclusion, 1 paragraph)
• Use formal words
• No brackets, exclamation points, suspension points…
• Do not start sentences with a conjunction (and, but, also, instead…), instead use linkers: despite,
in addition, however…
• Do not use a gure of speech (“don’t let the cat out of the bag” = don’t share the secret)
• Don’t overuse the same word, nd synonyms
• Don’t judge, analyze unless you’re asked to give an opinion
• Don’t nish a sentence with a preposition
• Be objective

HOW YOU SHOULD WRITE AN ESSAY

1. Introduction (It must t with the conclusion, that’s a summary of the thesis statement)

Hook —> to catch the reader attention; it could be a quotation, a question.
Examples:

Background informations

Thesis statement —> informative, arguable and defendable. Present one main idea cause you
have to explain it in paragraphs.

• “Teen celebrities cannot be considered role models because of their engagement in illegal
activities”
• “Schools can play their part in decreasing cyber bullying by taking action against students
involved in bullying at school or online on social media”
• “Research has shown that a great number/amount”
• “We live in age where a great number of people believe”

• “It is highly doubtful”
