1. Module Overview and Objectives
The aim of this module is to develop students into advanced users of English, both through extensive
practice of the four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing and also by systematically focusing on

At this level, the emphasis is firmly on each student taking control of their own learning in order to focus
their skills development on those areas most applicable to their real-life situations and/or future study

The module often follows a task-based learning methodology, in which students must participate fully in
activities in order to achieve the desired outcomes. Students are expected to read extensively in their own

minutes:
• Listening Exam:
30 minutes
• Speaking Exam:

The pedagogic approach taken throughout the module is based on task-based learning methodology and
encourages communicative practice. The learning activities suggested vary in nature to include a range of
visual, auditory and kinaesthetic activities.

4.1 Lectures

During the lecture time for this module you will be participating in small-group interactive classes, referred
to as 'lessons', each of which lasts for one hour. Your teacher might choose to combined lessons to make
longer sessions. You will be expected to participate in the classes and complete activities both on your
own and in small groups. You will also need to discuss topics with your classmates and teacher.

You will need to bring this Student Guide to every lesson as it contains details of many of the activities you
will be working on. You will also need a notebook in which to take notes, and record new vocabulary and
language points.

4.2 Private Study

In addition to the taught portion of the module, you will also be expected to undertake private study. This
course is generally taught in an intensive way and therefore a significant amount of homework will be set,
so that you may further practise and consolidate the skills learnt in class. You will also need to follow the
instructions given by your teacher and make sure you allocate sufficient time outside of the classroom to
complete the required work and to develop your understanding of the skills introduced. It is also important
to be aware of other ways to practice your English outside of the classroom. This may be via the internet,
TV, radio, a local library or bookshop or local speaking clubs.

5. Assessment

Aels Student Guide V.1.2

NCC Education Examination

This assessment will be based on the assessment criteria given above and students will be expected to
demonstrate that they have met the module’s learning outcomes. Sample assessments are available
through the NCC Education Virtual Learning Environment (http://vle.nccedu.com/login/index.php) for your
reference.

The paper is provided by NCC Education and conducted, according to NCC Education guidelines, in your
centre. Students will have to complete a written paper consisting of Listening, Language in Use, Reading
and Writing, and also a separate Speaking test. The Speaking test must be conducted individually, and
will last 8-10 minutes.

6. Textbooks

English File Advanced Third Edition is the highly recommended textbook for this module. However, you
may use an alternative textbook which covers similar language points and skills.

Latham-Koenig, C., Oxenden, C. and Lambert, J. (2015). English File Advanced Student’s Book Third
Edition. Oxford: OUP

ISBN 978—0-19-450239-9

Third Edition (without Key). Oxford: OUP*

ISBN 978-0-19-450217-7

* A ‘with key’ version of these books is also available and may be used so that students can check their
own work. You may also prefer the ‘with key’ version for their use.

You will need to bring your textbooks to every lesson during the course.

Activity – Education Systems

mark (?) if you are not sure. Then discuss them with a partner.

T, F or ?
Children start school at six years old.
The academic year begins in August.
Most undergraduate degrees last at least five years.
Primary school children have to wear a uniform.
Most students in tertiary education are female.
Most school children eat lunch in school.
Most postgraduate students study abroad.
Secondary school students can choose between
vocational and academic courses.
Many students in colleges and university are adults
who also work.
Lectures at universities take place in large halls with
hundreds of students present.
Online courses are more popular than face-to-face
courses.

Aels Student Guide V.1.2

Activity – Spelling Tips

Look at the spelling tips for tricky words. Which do you think are useful? Which do you already use?
Do you know any other tips? Discuss with a partner.

1. Mnemonics. These are memory tricks, such as remembering a phrase in which the first letter of each
word spells a tricky word. For example, the first letters in the phrase ‘Never eat chips, eat salad
sandwiches and remain young’ spell ‘necessary’.

You can also remember short phrases to help recall how many letters are in certain words. For
example: ‘You go really red because you are so shy when you’re embarrassed.’ and ‘When you have a
dessert you want seconds.’ (2 x s).

2. Seeing words within words. For example: ‘A secretary keeps a secret’; ‘a rat’ in ‘separate’.

3. Look for prefixes, suffixes and roots. For example: ‘disappear’ is ‘dis – appear’ and ‘unnecessary’ is
‘un – necessary’.

4. Understand other forms of the word. For example, knowing an adjective will help you spell an adverb
when you need to add ‘ly’ or ‘ally’. ‘Tradition’ (noun), ‘Traditional’ (adjective), ‘Traditionally’ (adverb).
‘Beauty’ (noun), ‘Beautiful’ (adjective), ‘Beautifully’ (adverb)

Write an essay of about 250 words on the advantages and disadvantages of becoming rich overnight,

teacher for marking.

Activity – Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

General Rules for ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’

The main game has 15 questions and four possible answers – simply choose the correct answer within
the time allowed to progress to the next question. If you do not know the answer, you stop at the point
where you are or use a lifeline (see below). As you answer each question correctly, you will progress up
the money ladder. However, if you answer a question incorrectly you either lose everything or drop to the
safety point in that section (the two safety points are £1,000 and £32,000). If you have not reached a safety
point, you will lose everything. If you have reached £8,000 and you answer the question incorrectly, you
will drop down to £1,000. In the same way, if you reach £500,000 and you answer the question incorrectly,
you will drop down to £32,000.

The money ladder looks like this:

£1,000,000
£500,000
£250,000
£125,000
£64,000
£32,000 (Safety point)
£16,000
£8,000
£4,000
£2,000
£1,000 (Safety point)
£500
£300
£200
£100

Lifelines:

Aels Student Guide V.1.2

Players have three lifelines available. Each lifeline can be used only once, but you can choose to use all
three on one question.

1. 50:50
Selecting 50:50 removes two incorrect answers, leaving you with the correct answer and one remaining
incorrect answer. The group which wrote the questions should decide which incorrect answer should be
left.

2. Phone a Friend
Selecting Phone a Friend allows you to ask one of you classmates the question within a 30- second time
limit. You cannot ask a person who was in the group which wrote the questions.

3. Ask the Audience

Selecting Ask the Audience allows the student to ask the others in the class to vote on the correct answer.
Each student can have only one vote and the group which wrote the questions are not allowed to vote.
