The following lines are delivered by King Louie, one of the main antagonists from Walt
Disney’s The Jungle Book. In this scene, King Louie has just met Mowgli—a boy from the
village—for the first time; King Louie apparently needs his help. Read the lines. Then, in
a well-developed paragraph, analyze how King Louie uses rhetorical strategies to achieve
his purpose as he addresses the young boy.
In the song I Wan’na be Like You by King Louie, King Louie only ever refers to Mogali as “you”
or “man cub”, he only ever calls fire the Red Flower, and he gives his message through song in
order to make Mogali more comfortable bartering with him. The audience is supposed to
understand how much King Louie wants fire and to hide how much he desires it. By doing this,
he ultimately moves Mogali to give him fire.
