Illustration 1:

Kingdom of Destruction
Rhetorical S: The author of this image is Pawl Kuczynsky, a famed Polish artist who is
Situation: well known for using his talents to not only capture the pitfalls of modern
society, but portray them in a captivating manner. He is the recipient of over
one hundred awards and continues to use his art to comment on cultural,
social, economic, and political issues.
P: In this image, Kuczynsky exposes the actions of modern nations and their
tendencies to use violence to achieve their goals.
A: This piece of work is directed at those currently living in a first world
country, as Kuczynsky claims them to be the group benefitting from the
situation. He assumes that his audience is either unaware, or in favor of the
actions of their governments, and intends this illustration to convince them of
the opposite.
C: This specific painting was completed in 2018, just a year after a US drone
strike killed tens of civilians in Syria and nationalistic riots were on the rise in
Poland.
E: Kuczynsky was likely moved by the events of the Syrian war in the creation
of this piece. His own experiences with nationalism could also have inspired
him, as living in Poland lends oneself to not only seeing the effects of German
nationalism (WWII), but Polish nationalism (the Polish far right movement).
C: Kuczynsky develops a thorough analysis of nationalism through his use of
artistic elements in this work. For example, by replacing one of the centrally
pictured chair’s legs with a bomb, he alludes to the propensities of
governments to prop themselves up with threats of destruction and violence.
It is also important to note that the previously mentioned chair is actually a
throne, serving to compare modern countries to feudal kingdoms of antiquity;
kingdoms who so often used brutal methodologies to maintain their power.
The background can be taken to represent the consequences of these
governments actions and the future that awaits us if we continue to let them
exercise their wills with no restraint.
A: Kuczynsky establishes Logos through the juxtaposition of his work and the
events of the Syrian war, almost as if he is warning us that such incidents
could happen again if we are not careful. These same actions additionally
establish Pathos, as the general population of most countries were not in
favor of the Syrian war and feel bad for the Syrian populace.
T: The tone of the piece is very heavy, as indicated by the dark and muted
color palette used by Kuczynsky. Similarly, the sun is blotted out by smoke
and the sky is black, further adding to the foreboding tone of the piece.

Thesis: In the 2018 canvas painting Kingdom of Destruction by Pawl Kaczynsky, Kaczynsky
makes use of various forms of allusion, a dark tone, and juxtaposition in order to
educate the populations of first world countries as to the actions of their
governments, ultimately moving said populaces to lobby for governmental
reform and more responsible foreign policies..

Illustration 2:

Television

Rhetorical S: The person who created this image is Pawel Kuczynsky. He was born in
Situation: Szczecin, Poland in 1976 and has become a popular art satirist and philosopher
who comments on cultural, social, economic, and political issues. He has won
over 100 awards and uses art to capture issues with society.
P: In this image Kuczynsky is showing the harmful effects of television on people
and how people bring the harmful effects on themselves by voluntarily
consuming entertainment from their televisions and becoming reliant on their
television for entertainment instead of other sources of entertainment that are
better for your health.
A: This image could be directed at anybody but based on the man in the image I
think that it is directed at adults who devote too much time to watching T.V. to
inform them that watching a lot of T.V. can be harmful to them.
C: This image was produced in a time when people are becoming increasingly
obsessed with screens and televisions so the image is meant to comment on that
fact. In a world where we are becoming more reliant on screens and television it is
becoming more and more harmful to us.
E: The author was prompted to make this image because of the increased
reliance on and danger of screens. He wanted to produce a warning to those who
are reliant or becoming reliant on screens because he is seeing the danger that
they can have.
C: The artist uses an older looking T.V. I think it is because he wants to show that
television has been harmful for a long time, not just in recent years. He also puts
an image of an elegant looking bird which shows that T.V. can have the illusion of
being peaceful and fine. He also has the man putting his arms in the air which
symbolizes his submission to T.V. and all of its harmful effects.
A: The artist wants to make the audience feel bad for the guy because he is
causing himself to be pulled down a cliff by his neck by a T.V. but he also wants
the audience to be afraid of the effects television can have.
T: His image gives a lonely feeling and a feeling of sadness and fear in the
audience and as a result the tone of the image is that of lonely and scared
sadness.

Thesis: Pawel Kuczynsky uses his image to convey a feeling of loneliness, fear, and
sadness among the audience by showing the man submitting himself to the
television and all of the negative effects that it brings because of how he depends
on the television for independence.

Illustration 3: FACEBOOK
Rhetorical S: The artist Pawel Kuczynsky was born in Poland and dedicates his life
Situation: combating social problems by illustrating them in unique ways. He’s won over 100
awards.
P: The purpose of this piece was to demonstrate the crippling effect that
FaceBook has on it’s users. The depiction of the F, representing FaceBook,
blocking the door describes how our problem of loneliness and isolation is caused
by FaceBook itself.
A: This illustration targets the audience of FaceBook users who feel they are
trapped yet make the excuse that FaceBook is the only way to communicate with
the outside world.
C: The social media platform FaceBook was created in 2004 which happens to be
during Kuczynsky middle-age life. Because Social Media is relatively new in our
society, it’s difficult to understand all of the effects it has on its users such as
loneliness and depression. His age is exposed because of his choice to use
FaceBook rather than Instagram or Snapchat.
E: We can assume that the author himself has experience with toxic social media
or has seen its effects on the lives of friends and family. This caused him to attack
the social dilemma using art to help others view the consequences of it, Facebook
specifically.
C: The dark color of the illustration shows the gloomy effects that Facebook has
on it’s users. By depicting the Facebook logo as a periscope, it symbolizes how
people use it as a way to see the outside world when FaceBook is the reason they
are trapped in the first place. Also, the bright blue color of the Facebook logo
draws your attention and makes it the center of the illustration. The bright colors
seen through the crack of the door show joy and freedom of the outside world
behind the steel door.
A: The artist causes the audience to feel trapped by showing the man from the
perspective of being inside the dark gloomy cell. By depicting the door as part
way open, shows that there is hope of freedom if we let go of FaceBook. I would
say this cartoon appeals more to the older generation because only old people
use FaceBook.
T: Once again, the dark color of 90% of the drawing gives it a dull and
discouraging vibe. The person himself is wearing grey clothes which washes out
his features. The crack in the door showing fresh colors, gives it a light and
hopeful tone outside of the cell.

Thesis: The artist Pawel Kuczynsky who has witnessed the rise of FaceBook throughout
his life uses colors, perspective and symbolism in his illustration to portray that
although Facebook is used as a way to view and connect to the outside world, it
keeps us trapped in an isolated prison type life.

Illustration 4:

Rhetorical S: The speaker, as portrayed by author pawel kuczynski, in this illustration is a

Situation: politician or government speaker of sorts
P: The purpose is to express how the government uses fear tactics to get you
to listen to what they have to say.
A: The audience could be any and everyone who is influenced to listen based
on their fear of what may happen if they don't listen.
C: Context could be death penalty or the reprecussions that come with not
listening to the people “in charge” (notice how his words are whats keeping
the dog on a leash)
E: In 2016 there was a recorded 20 people who were killed by leathal injection
in accordance to death penalty, it set a record for most people killed in
georgia by death penalty. Since this illustration was released in 2016, this
could be kuczynski's way of saying it was wrong.
C: One of the biggest choices that I noticed was how the microphone was
holding the rabid dog's leash. I found this interesting because to me that
simple physical connection connected the violent dog to the words of the
microphone.
A: His appeal to anger and fear is evident because of the colors he uses in his
depiction. He only uses red and black, which in other contexts, don't usually
relate to happiness and trust.
T: The author obviously views the death penalty as a hostile action we can tell
because of the choices he uses to include in his illustration. The fact that the
dog looks ready to attack is almost enough in itself to depict the tone.

Thesis: The author Pawel Kuczynski depicts in his illustration a well dressed speaker
behind a pulpit talking into a microphone that is connected to a leash that is
holding back an angry dog. I interpret this as using fear tactics to keep people
who don't have as much power in line. Because of the different literary devices he
used we can infer that he sees this as a big problem in our society. The colors he
uses depicts anger, hatred and power.

Illustration 5:

Rhetorical S: The artist of this cartoon was Pawel Kuczynsky. He is a Polish artist who mostly
Situation: illustrates political cartoons. He is world-renowned and has received over 100
awards for his illustrations.
P: This illustration was created to depict the problem with technology in today’s
society. I think that the book is meant to represent the wealth of knowledge that
we could have if we were to read books and educate ourselves then we would be
able to gain more knowledge. When we’re just on our phones and devices, we
aren’t gaining all the knowledge we can, and instead of being in an ocean, we’re
just in a pond.
A: I think that the audience for this illustration is just all of humankind, especially
people who have phones, and who spend a lot of time on them. Today, most
people don’t really do anything productive on their phones or computers, and
they’re just using them for entertainment. When we read new things, when we
read unbiased, or even biased, articles we are able to learn more opinions and
things that will help us be less ignorant.
C: When this illustration was drawn, phones were getting to be really important
and a big trend. When he drew this, I think it was to show that by using our
phones more and more, we’re going to become more ignorant.
E: I think the catalyst for this illustration was that phones ae becoming a new
thing that is really impacting society and people. They are distracting people from
the things that are really important and they’re influencing humanity, mostly in a
negative way. I’m guessing the artist had seen the negative effects in someone he
knew and wanted to draw an image to show the negative consequences.
C: One of the biggest choices that was made in this picture was the blue of the
book. It was very bright and it drew the viewer’s attention to that object. Another
important thing was the placement of the objects. Instead of having the boy in
the middle of the image, the artist placed him slightly off center. By doing this,
he’s able to make the viewers look at both objects in an equal way, instead of only
focusing on one part of the illustration.
A: The illustrator appeals to the audience by drawing the hone and book in such
drastic proportions. By making the book bigger than the boy, he’s able to show
the ocean of knowledge that’s contained in books. By making the phone so small
in comparison, he shows how little knowledge our phones can give us compared
to that which books could give us.
T: I think that the tone of this picture is very ominous. With the boy drawn to be
looking back at the book, it almost gives the viewer a sense that he’s about to be
crushed by a wave of knowledge that is coming toward him. One thing I found
interesting about the picture was why he had the water wings. He was an older
boy who I would assume knows how to swim, but I’m still not completely sure I
understand why the artist added the water wings to the picture.

Thesis: In the painting Bath by Pawel Kuczynsky, Kuczynsky uses several rhetorical
devices to inform his audience about the steady incline of phone usage. By using
techniques such as proportion and color to inform the audience about the
detrimental effects of time constantly spent on the phone, Kuczynsky is able to
make his viewers aware of this epidemic and make them think about their habits
and what they can do to fix them.

ODLOTY

Rhetorical S: Pawel Kuczynski is an artist that focuses on social issues with technology and
Situation: the environment. He is known not for the quality of his art, but for the meaning
behind it.
P: The purpose of this illustration is to show what everyone is focused on. It is to
show the effects of the media on our minds.
A: His intended audience would be anyone that sees and is influenced by this
illustration.
C: Everyone has a smartphone, and it seems that they are all in school.
E: I think that he made this because of the situation of addiction to smartphones.
While at school or work, many people would be distracted on their phones.
C: One of the main choices that is made is that their heads are in the sky. As if
their “heads are in the clouds.” The heads and the bottom half are gray, in
contrast to the bright blue of the sky. It is repeating on forever and ever, as it
fades out from the foggy background. Each head has a different facial structure
as well, depicting that they are all different people living the same thing over and
over again. Some of them have their eyes open, while others do not.
A: His appeals to the control that cellphones have over people. It only uses grays
and blues. Known colors for sadness, or loneliness.
T: The heads in the sky depicts “Heads in the Clouds” especially during school.
With a somber tone, with somber colors and feel.

Thesis: The author Pawel Kuczynski depicts in his illustration boys in school. With their
Heads in the clouds attached to cell phones. Because of the colors and facial
expression that he used in his illustration. It gives a somber tone about the
problem with phone addiction and social media.

Illustration:

Thesis: The artist Pawel Kuczynski depicts in his illustration a well dressed speaker
behind a pulpit talking into a microphone that is connected to a leash that is
holding back an angry dog. I interpret this as using fear tactics to keep people
who don't have as much power in line. Because of the different rhetorical devices
he used we can infer that he sees this as a big problem in our society. The colors
and facial expressions he uses depicts anger, hatred and power.

Body Paragraph: The facial expression of the dog almost matches the look of the man speaking,
both man and dog appear to be scowling and both are showing teeth. By
drawing these, Kuczynsky illustrates that the man is just as hostile as the rabid
dog, but in a different way. If the dog is being physically aggressive what kind of
aggression is the speaker demonstrating? The colors used in this illustration also
contribute to the hostile picture kuczynski is trying to create. The colors of the
man's suit are similar to those of the dog's fur. Because we inferred the dog is a
fear tactic being used to keep people in line, is it really the dog keeping people in
line or is it the man that is too similar to the dog for comfort.
