Guards

Rapid Action Force (RAF)


Ø The Rapid Action Force (RAF) is a specialized wing of the Indian CRPF (Central
Reserve Police Force).
Ø Established:11 December 1991
Ø It currently has 10 battalions which are numbered 99 to 108 in the
CRPF.
Ø CRPF is the only Paramilitary Force in the country to have two
women battalions.
Ø RAF is deployed to cover most of the politically volatile parts of
the India.

Border Security Force (BSF)

Ø Director General: MR Subhash Joshi (IPS, Uttarakhand Cadre)
Ø Its primary role is to guard India's international borders during peacetime and also
prevent Tran’s border crime.

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)


Ø Formed: 27 July, 1939
Ø Legal personality: Governmental: Government agency
Ø Federal agency: India
Ø Governing body: Ministry of Home Affairs (India)
Ø Constituting instrument: Central Reserve Police Force Act, 1949

Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)


Ø Headquarters: New Delhi, India
Ø The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is an Indian force conceived on October 24,
1962 for security along the India's border with the Tibet
Autonomous Region of China, border covering 2115 kilometres.
Ø The first Director General of the ITBP was Late Sardar Balbir
Singh (itbpolice.nic.in).
Ø The ITBP is trained in Civil Medical Camp, disaster management,
and nuclear, biological and chemical disasters.

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)


Ø Established: June 15, 1983
Ø Headquarters: New Delhi, India
Ø Director General CISF: Rajiv
Ø CISF is the largest industrial security force in the world.
Ø The CISF provides security cover to 300 industrial units and other
establishments located all over India.

Assam Rifles
Ø The Assam Rifles are one of the Paramilitary forces of India.
Ø Active:1835 – Present
Ø Country: India
Ø Headquarters: Shillong
Ø Director General Assam Rifles: Lt Gen Rai
Ø Currently there are 46 Battalions of Assam Rifles under the
control of the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Rashtriya Rifles
Ø It is a counter-insurgency force in India.
Ø Indian strategists believed that in the event of a war, the 40,000-strong Rashtriya
Rifles would protect the lines of communication and supplies from terrorist attacks
in Jammu and Kashmir.
Ø The reputation of Rashtriya Rifles as a specialized anti-terrorist
force has a tremendous impact on the militant's psyche who avoids any
kind of direct confrontation with RR troops.
Ø The force is deployed in Jammu and Kashmir.

Indian Home Guard


Ø The Indian Home Guard is an Indian paramilitary force.
Ø It is a voluntary force, tasked as an auxiliary to the Indian Police.
Ø The Home Guards Organization was reorganized in India in 1962 after the Sino-
Indian War with the People's Republic of China, though it existed in smaller units
individually in some places.
Ø All citizens of India, in the age group of 18-50, are eligible.
Normal tenure of membership in Home Guards is 3 to 5 years.

Territorial Army
Ø The Indian Defense Force, incorporating Europeans and Indians
in separate sections, was formed by the British in 1917.
Ø It was established in order to release regular troops from
garrison duties during the First World War.
Ø It was divided into British and Indian sections.
Ø The Territorial Army is part of the regular Indian Army.
Ø It is celebrated with the Prime Minister's TA Day Parade every
year.

National cadet Corps (NCC)


Ø The National Cadet Corps is the Indian military cadet corps with
its Headquarters at New Delhi.
Ø It is open to school and college students on voluntary basis.
Ø Active: April 16, 1948
Ø Headquarters: DG NCC, R.K. Puram, New Delhi
Ø The National Cadet Corps in India is a voluntary organization which recruits cadets
from high schools, colleges and Universities all over India.
Ø The Cadets are given basic military training in small arms and
parades.
