Today we are going to report about the 3-unit cells.

We are also going to be talking about how we were

able to make the three different structures using Styrofoam spheres.

Simple cubic

Composes of 1 atom

Coordination = 6 (# of atoms attach to a single atom)

APF = 0.52/ 52% volume

48% empty space

edge length = a = 2R

Body centered cubic

Composes of 2 atoms

Coordination = 8

APF = 0.68/ 68% volume

32% empty space

Edge length =
Face centered cubic

Composes of 4 atoms

Coordination = 12

APF = 0.74/ 74% volume (most efficient cubic structure / aka cubic closes packing)

26% empty space
