THE STORY OF MY LIFE

BOOK REVIEW

The Story of My Life is the autobiography of an American Author Helen
Adams Keller. She first began to write the book in 1902, when she was still a
student at Radcliffe College. It was first published in Ladies Homes Journal in the
same year as a series of installments. The following year, 1903, it was published
by Doubleday Page and Co. as a book.
Keller occasionally lopes into emotional passages, her writing style is
generally formal. No one can compare to the intimacy of her own words
expressed in the autobiography. She engages the readers with her thoughts,
emotions and opinions. Keler`s determination, diligence and strength are
displayed throughout the passion of her writing. She passionately challenges her
readers to break the barrier of low expectations and limitation.
The Story Of My Life by Helen Keller is a beautiful story about the power of
love, language and learning and understanding. It was sad and humbling to hear
how Helen was desperate and wanted to communicate with people. It inspired
many because she achieved a lot and now she became a famous personality,
although she was blind and deaf. It was really a heart touching story too.
The Story of My Life by lecturer is a noteworthy and important book
because it gives a primary hand account of the experience of being deaf and
blind during a world which, especially within the period she was writing, had only
minimal accommodations in situ. Its description of how Keller struggled to find
out a way to understand and communicate with people is fascinating, and its
publication, and also the continued advocacy of Keller herself, contributed much
to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities and increase sympathy and
understanding for them. Despite the importance of the book, and also the
inherent interest of the narrative, I don't find the prose style particularly
appealing, and don't generally enjoy autobiography as a genre. Thus while I
enjoy what I learn from the book, and also the sense of discovery of a world alien
to my very own experience, I don't find it pleasurable within the sense that i
would enjoy Premchand, or other writers whose prose style I enjoy.
This book has the strongest Strength because the book was published in
1903 by a woman when the ladies failed to have the facility to even vote. I
believe this was the milestone in that time that being a woman she would be able
to publish her own book. That point was male dominated society where the
numerous works of ladies were captured by men. It also inculcates a very good
moral value too! We should never be unhappy with our disability but we should
change our disability in a positive way to achieve more.
