THE CATCHER IN THE RYE

BY
J. D. SALINGER

Veronika Sklonna
The Catcher in the Rye is a novel by J. D. Salinger. It was originally
intended for adults but is often read by adolescents for its themes of
angst, alienation, and as a critique on superficiality in society.
It has been translated widely. About one million copies are sold each
year, with total sales of more than 65 million books.
The novel also deals with complex issues of innocence, identity,
belonging, loss, connection, sex, and depression.
Why is the novel called The Catcher in the Rye?
This is a modified line from a poem by Robert Burns that has become a nursery rhyme. The protagonist used the
image of a field of tall rye in which small children walk when he talked about his dream. Changing the quote in the
title, the author determined the main idea of the work.
The genre of the novel can be defined as a confession novel. The story is about a young man who was expelled
from school for academic failure and who first faced the cruel realities of life.
The main character is Holden Caulfield, a teenager who knows how to judge everything sharply and sarcastically,
who can very subtly feel the falsity and hypocrisy in relationships between people.
THE MAIN CHARACTER
Holden Caulfield is a teenager who knows how to judge everything
sharply and sarcastically, who can very subtly feel the falsity and
hypocrisy in relationships between people.
Holden himself is not averse to lying, but this is more of a boy's
fantasies. Even insignificant details in the behavior of others reveal to
him the true qualities and traits of character.
He is a maximalist in everything and a rebel. Intolerant of others, but
sincerely attached to his sister and brothers. He has a surprisingly rich
and interesting inner world.
This is evident in the passage in which Holden discusses his destiny. He
dreams of saving pure children's souls.
