Csec Maths SBA Introduction

1) What is the purpose of the SBA?

 It is the view of CXC and Math teachers that the transition from “School Math” to real world
application isn’t fluent.
 The Math SBA is an attempt by CXC to bridge this issue of “School Math” to real world
application.

2) The project title

Examples topics :
https://www.csecmathtutor.com/sba-ideas-and-topics.html

 Should be clear and concise and related to a real world problem.

 The title may be in the form of a question.
 The title may be in the form of a precise and clear statement of intent. The intent must
show what you want to accomplish.
3) Introduction
 Should be a well thought out and a comprehensive description of the project itself.
 Set the background for what you intend to do.
 Objectives (whatever you plan to accomplish) should be stated in the introduction.
 Objectives should be clear and precise.

4) Method of Data Collection

 The method that you use to collect your data needs to be stated clearly here. For example a
survey, questionnaire, experiment or investigation.
 Ensure that your method is error free as data containing errors is unreliable.
 If data is unreliable then whatever conclusion you come up with will be flawed.
 The instrument (survey, questionnaire etc) that you intend to use to gather the data should be
stated here, blank tables with headings, survey questions, diagrams and general calculations about
things you plan to discuss.

5) Presentation of Data
 Needs to be accurate and well organized.
 If you used a survey or a table to collect your initial information, this table needs to be properly
laid out with appropriate column headers that describes exactly what you are doing.
 Need to have at least one graph showing data. Can use any of statistical graph, bar char, pie chart,
linear graph, histogram etc.
 Graphs need to be well labeled in terms of axes.
 Introduce the graph; don’t just place it on the page. For example (The following graph shows …..
then add the graph).

 Need to be accurate in your use of Mathematical concepts while you present your data. So ensure
that everything is accurately worked out.
 Recommend that you use Microsoft Office or other spreadsheet programs to generate your
graphs.

6) Analysis of Data
 Since this a Math SBA, use the language of the Mathematics as well as use Mathematic concepts
in your analysis.
 Must write logically and consistent (coherent) way.
 No need to be wordy, you just need to make sense of the data and write that understanding in a
way so the reader can understand what you mean.
 You should be detailed and coherent (logical and consistent).
 Try to answer the following questions as you write. For example (What is your data saying to
you? What patterns do you see? What trends do you see?)
 Look at averages and compare quantities using percentages.

7) Discussion of Finding
 After doing analysis, what have you discovered?
 Maybe what you thought you would find may be different however, your work has shown
something.
 State clearly and precisely the something you have found.
 Your discussion of MUST follow from your data and your analysis of the data. Can’t make a
discussion on claims not supported by you have or by analysis you did.

8) Conclusion
 Just make a summary of what you have done in the analysis of data and the discussion of
findings.

Finally
1) You get marked for grammar and the use of English so make sure to at least spell check your
work.
2) It should be typed.
3) Make sure you create a content page.
4) Need to have a cover page with your personal and center information.
5) Most likely using electronic submission so save your document, back it up somewhere, email
yourself a copy etc. Ensure when Teacher need it, you have it.

6) If you used a survey or questionnaire you can include those in an appendix at the end of the back
of the project.
7) Make sure your work is well organized.
8) Remember you have a 1000 word limit so avoid being wordy and write and to the point.
