“TINIKLING”

COSTUME FOR MALE

Tinikling is a traditional Philippine dance that uses sliding bamboo poles on the
ground, and is the national dance of the Philippines. In this dance, two “clickers” clap
two bamboo poles while dancers skip between or outside poles. These bamboo poles
are used as a percussive instrument and must be clapped hard enough to make a
sound, and the dancers must be fast enough to avoid the bamboo claps. Since this is a
fast dance accompanied by music that matches the atmosphere, it is often a
performative spectacle by dance troupes. The dancers typically wear traditional Filipino
costumes – “Barong” for males and “Maria Clara” for females. Some dancers dress in
“rural suit” (cropped pants for males and long skirts for females) to emulate the farmers
during the Spanish colonial era. The “tinikling” name comes from the “tikling” bird, which
is known for its grace and speed in walking through rice fields and dodging bamboo
when farmers attempted to stop the birds from stealing their rice.
