5.3.1 Mixture Problem - Example #1

Example:
#1. A tank initially contains 40 gallons of pure water. A salt solution containing 2 pounds of salt per
gallon of water is poured in the tank at the rate of 3 gal/min. The mixture is stirred and is drained out of
the tank at the same rate.
a) Find the amount of salt at any time t
b) Find the amount of salt in the tank after half hour?
c) Find the amount of salt in the tank after a long time?
5.3.2 Mixture problems - Example #2

#2. A tank contains 80 gallons of pure water. A brine solution with 2 lb/gal of salt enters at 2 gal/min
and well stirred mixture leaves the same rate.
a) Find the amount of salt in the tank at any time t
b) Time at which the brine leaving will contain 1 lb/gal of salt
Module 5 – Summary
Growth / Decay Equation states that “the rate of change of a substance is proportional to the
amount of substance present.

Newtons' Law of Cooling states that “the rate of change of the temperature of a cooling body is
proportional to the difference between the temperature of the body and the constant
temperature of the medium surrounding the body”
