Q9. A spherical shell, 1m in diameter and 5mm wall thickness is filled with a liquid until its
volume is increased by 200cm3. Determine the pressure on the wall, principal stresses and
maximum shear stress produced. E for the shell material = 2X105N/mm2 and 1/m= 0.3.
Q10. A solid vertical prismatic bar of the equilateral triangle section of side 20mm is firmly
fixed at lower end at a distance of 600mm from top. Find strain energy when
(i) pull of 10kN is applied gradually,
(ii) 8kN pull is applied suddenly,
(iii) 4kN falls through 120mm before it strikes the collar attached to the lower end of the bar.
Take E = 200GPa.
Q11. A prismatic steel bar of 500mm length and 200mm2 cross-sectional area is subjected to
direct compressive stress of 125N/mm2. If E for the material is 200GPa, find strain energy
and resilience of the bar. Find also the modulus of resilience, if the stress at elastic limit for
the material in compression is 200N/mm2.
Q12. A prismatic bar of length 1m and having diameter of 10mm is subjected to an axial pull
of 200N. If the diameter of the bar is increased by 10%, what will be the percentage change
in strain energy?
