Pre-colonial Times

 Folk Narratives- epic and folk tales are
varied exotic and magical.They explain
how the world is created, why some
places have waterfalls, volcanoes ,
mountains, flora and fauna, in the case
of legend, an explanation of the origins
of things.
Epics
Hudhod & Alim (Ifugao)-
the Hudhod narrates the
creation of the world and
the journey of Aliguyan,
a man from the village of
Gonhandan, who is
endowed with
supernatural and
limitless powers. One
episode recounts his
duel with Pumbakhayon,
a warrior, who is of equal
strength and agility,
from a village called
Daligdigan .
Hari sa bukid
(Negros)- It
tells about an
epic on how
volcanoes
formed .
Hinilawod ( Bisaya)
-is an epic poem
orally transmitted
from early
inhabitants of a
place called Sulod in
central Panay,
Philippines. The term
"Hinilawod"
generally translates
to "Tales From The
Mouth of The
Halawod River".

 Ibong Adarna -The author of the widely known
epic has been claimed to be José de la Cruz or
"Huseng Sisiw", but until now the real author
was never known. The legend says that the
story was written in Spain during the mid 15th
century by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi. The epic
was brought in the Philippines during 1565.
