fully equipped with the skill. You can study this module at your own schedule and
learn at your own pace. The module aims to monitor your knowledge and learning
about the International welding code and standards and this contain discussion on
how important it is to obtain the basic skills in welding. Please read, understand and
follow the instructions carefully.

For the Facilitator

As to the parents, since the new normal is set due to the health situation
around the world, your guidance and support is highly appreciated to help your child
continue to perform this module as a means of mastering their chosen skills.

This is intended for those who cannot attend classes online. This shall be
answered with the teacher or a learned adult at home.

Please take good care of this module and don’t write anything on this as this
will also be used by other students. Feel free to contact the teacher if you have some
questions about this Self Learning Kit.

Introduction

Welding is technique used for joining metallic parts usually through the

application of heat. This technique was discovered during efforts to
manipulate iron into useful shapes. This module is designed to give you a broad
overview of the specifications, codes and standards that are widely used in welded
fabrication, construction and maintenance work.

You will learn the International Welding Code and Standard and be able to
learn more about public safety and reliability on the created product and a
preparation of following the standards required for the job.

Mini Lesson

INTERNATIONAL WELDING CODES AND STANDARDS

Why Welding Codes Exist

Before a welder can begin working on any job covered by a welding code or
specification be must become a certified under the code that applies. Many different codes
are in use today and it is exceeding important that the specific code is referred to when
taking qualifications test. In general, the following type of work is covered by codes pressure
piping, high way and rail ways bridges, public buildings tanks and containers that will hold
flammable or explosive, materials cross country pipe line aircraft ordinance.

Terms Used In This Module:

 Codes – documents that govern and guide welding and other activities. Codes
generally use the word shall to indicate the mandatory use of certain types of
materials, methods and procedures.

6
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
Region VII – Central Visayas
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF TOLEDO CITY

 Standards – Documents that govern and guide welding and other activities.
Standards generally describe the requirements for materials, process, products,
systems or services rendered. Standards often specify the procedures, methods,
equipment and tests that determine if standards requirements have been met.
Standards can be in the form of codes, specifications, classifications and guides.

 Specifications – Are similar to codes excepts that specifications mainly provide

requirements for products rather than processes.

 WPS: A WPS is the welding procedure specification. It shows the welder an overall
direction, shows the welding materials and joint design. It also lists important code
requirements, techniques, parameters and welding materials.

 PQR: The PQR is the procedure qualification report. It is a record of testing results
for any welds created in accordance with the welding procedure specification (WPS).

 WQTR: The WQTR or welder qualification test record describes the results of a test
to determine if a welder is qualified to weld to a certain welding procedure
specification.

Welding codes are developed by a variety of organizations to set requirements for:

Inspection, testing, repair, approved materials, fabrication, design specifications and welding
itself. The most commonly used codes are from the AWS (D1.1) and ASME (Section IX).
The difference between ASME and AWS is that ASME is for welding procedure and welder
qualification. AWS is for both welder and welding procedure qualification including
inspection, erection and fabrication.

List of Welding Codes

 The API or American Petroleum Institute is a national trade association that

speaks for all aspects of the U.S. oil and natural gas industry. Welding codes issued
are related to tasks such as pipeline inspection, storage tanks and pipeline
construction.

 The American Welding Society (AWS) has a mission to advance the science,

technology and application of welding and allied joining and cutting processes,
including brazing, soldering, and thermal spraying. See Figure 2.

Figure 2. Electrode under AWS Standards

AWS D1.1: Fabricating and Erecting Welded Steel Structures

This code contains the requirements for fabricating and erecting welded
steel structures. This code applies to steels with a thickness of 1/8 inch
(3.2mm) or more. When this code is specified in a contract, most of the
provisions are mandatory. Optional provisions and examples are shown in
an annex included within this code.

 The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) similarly defines a WPS

as a written document that provides direction to the welder or welding operator for
making production welds in accordance with Code requirements. ASME also defines
welding PQR as a record of variables recorded during the welding of the test coupon.
The record also contains the test results of the tested specimens. See Figure 3.

Figure 3. Product under ASME

 The International Organization for Standardization is the world's largest

developer of voluntary international standards and it facilitates world trade by
providing common standards among nations. More than twenty thousand standards
have been set, covering everything from manufactured products and technology to
food safety, agriculture, and healthcare. Example for this is ISO 2560: Welding
consumables. Covered electrodes for manual metal arc welding of non-alloy and fine
grain steels.

Figure 4. Product under ISO Standard

 Australian / New Zealand (AS/NZS) Standards is the body responsible for

the development, maintenance and publication of Australian Standards.
Example is AS/NZS 1554.1 : Structural steel welding - Welding of steel
structures

Figure 5. Product under AS/NZS Standard

 The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) had issued numerous

standards covering welding processes, which unified and replaced former national
standards. Of the former national standards, those issued by BSI and DIN were
widely used outside their countries of origin. After the Vienna Agreement with ISO,
CEN has replaced most of them with equivalent ISO standards (EN ISO series).

What is the Purpose?

The purpose of Codes, Standards and specifications is to secure that safe and
reliable products are produced and that those persons working around welded structures
and equipment are not exposed to undue danger or hazard to their health.

Generalization (What I Have Learned)

Loving the knowledge received today? Let us sum it up through this activity!

Fill in the blanks to complete the idea of the paragraphs given below.

The purpose of Codes, ________and ________is to secure that safe and reliable products
are produced and that those persons working around welded structures and equipment are
not exposed to undue danger or hazard to their health.

The commonly known International welding codes are ___________, ___________,

____________, _____________, _____________,and ______________. Welding codes

Valuing (What I Have Valued)

The purpose of each of the welding codes is to have a uniform way to approach
welding that reflects the best practices developed and proven to work over time. They have
the effect of improving welder skill, equipment and processes. The result is growth in the
profession when it comes to skill, quality and welder efficiency. For example, you are having
a task to weld but then you are not following any standards. What will happen to your work?
Surely, it might be unacceptable as its face value or worse it couldn’t serve its purpose as it
doesn’t follow the standard and specification required. As a result, your work is not good and
your job is at risk. Practicing to comply with the standards required for the task every time is
an essential requirement of becoming a good welder.

Application (What Can I Do)

Now we will see if you clearly understand the lesson by heart through performing task
related to the lesson. I want you to follow the directions below:

Prepare the following:

1 pc. 10mm X 50mm X 200mm Mild steel plates
1 pc. E6013 welding rod

For those students who have welding machine at home:

Procedures:
1. Using the 10mm X 50mm X 200mm Mild steel plates and E6013 welding rod, create an
acceptable weld puddle.
2. Perform a stringer or layered beads following the International Welding Codes and
Standards in every materials and machineries used in performing the task.
3. Have your guardian or any adult at home to guide you while performing the task.
4. Perform the task with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
5. Once done, have your output documented and forward to your teacher’s social media
account for checking.

For those students who doesn’t have welding machine at home:

- Please inform your teacher to set a date for your actual task performance.
