In the Mullerthal Region – Luxemburg’s Little Switzerland, the visitor can spend a diversified vacation.
Echternach, the eldest city of the country, is considered as historic hot spot and capital of the whole region .
Hikers will encounter a well signalled hiking net throughout the whole region and they may discover
impressive rock formations, romantic brook valleys, amazing view points on the valley of the Sûre
(www.mullerthal-trail.lu). The small villages are quite charming and the old ruins of the castles of Beaufort
and Larochette as well as the Schießentümpel cascade are worth a visit.
FASCINATION ROCKS
On a length of more than 110 km, the Mullerthal Trail passes through all the natural particularities of
the Mullerthal Region – Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland. Natural paths lead through forests and
pastures and can be combined with impressive canyons and bizarre rock formations.
An ideal starting point is certainly Echternach, the cultural and touristic highlight of the region. Next to its
Willibrord Basilica, the Abbey and the ancient city center of Echternach offers many other interesting places.
If you want to relax, stop at one of the bars or terraces. The shops in the pedestrian zone are open on
Sunday afternoon. There are many restaurants and hotels in Echternach which will guarantee you a pleasant
stay.
From Echternach you can start the walk towards Rosport and the lower Sûre. Its also possible to start from
Rosport, Moersdorf, Mompach or Herborn.
You walk along the river Sûre which makes the border with Germany and take your right to walk into the
woods behind Echternach. Route 1 leads you next to impressive rock formations to reach the locality of
Steinheim. You pass through wonderful meadows, have nice views onto the valley before getting to Rosport,
where the Mullerthal Trail is passing next to the Tudor Castle. You can stop for a break in Steinheim and in
Rosport.
You then continue towards Moersdorf. On this part you will encounter a real cultural jewel which is
Girsterklaus, a very old and tiny pilgrimage chapel which offers a beautiful view on the surrounding
meadows and on the Sûre valley.
You then walk down again to the valley towards the locality of Hinkel, where “Kulturhaff Millermoler” a bed
and breakfast, also selling regional products, welcomes you for a rest. The Mullerthal Trail continues towards
Born and Moersdorf while passing through the forests. You can stop for a break in Born, Moersdorf or
Mompach.
After Moersdorf the Mullerthal Trail leaves the river to turn to the west to Boursdorf and Mompach. You
continue your way towards Echternach passing through the forest of Herborn. There are no places to stop
and rest in this forest called “Haardt” and you will be able to do so only at the lake in Echternach or in
Echternach itself
Mullerthal Trail route 2
You can start Route 2 in Echternach but also in other villages like Berdorf, Scheidgen, Consdorf or
Mullerthal.
In Echternach, you start at the bus station and then walk towards Berdorf (rue Maximilien). After a short
but strenuous climb, you reach a nice viewpoint (“Troosknäppchen”) from which you can see the Basilica
and the surroundings.
The Mullerthal Trail then leads through “Wolfsschlucht” (the wolves’ canyon) where wolves could find
shelter in former times. You continue along the Aesbach brook and pass Perekop, a massive rock and then
reach Hohllay. This is a cave which was used in former times to cut out the millstones. The traces of this
activity can still be seen on the rocks. After that you reach the amphitheater, which is still used for theatric
performances.
You then pass the locality of Berdorf known not only for its famous Berdorf Cheese but also for its
wonderful landscape. The impressive rock formations in the surrounding woods make of this village the ideal
starting point for many local hikes.
You continue in the Schnellert forest towards the village of Mullerthal where one of the most important
mills of the whole region was located (the mill is being restored and will be opened for the public). There are
places to stop and rest in Mullerthal.
The Mullerthal Trail continues along the brook Black Ernz towards a little picturesque cascade called
Schiessentumpel.
From there you walk towards the east along Eulenburg, Goldfralay and Goldkaul which are spectacular
rock formations worth a little rest. Before arriving to Consdorf you can have a rest at the mill of Consdorf
(Moulin de Consdorf) which has a hotel and a restaurant. More rest places can be found in Consdorf village.
The Mullerthal Trail continues through rocks and woods towards an amazing crevice called Kohlscheuer. If
you want to cross it, be sure to have a pocket lamp as it is very dark and narrow. If you don’t feel like
crossing it, you can walk around it.
You then pass the villages of Consdorf and Scheidgen before arriving to Echternach again.
In the locality of Mullerthal, Route 3 of the Mullerthal Trail is touching Route 2. Mullerthal is a good starting
point for this route but also other villages like Beaufort, Medernach, Larochette or Heffingen can be
used as departure point.
If you start in Mullerthal, you walk along the Black Ernz towards Beaufort crossing the beautiful valley of
Hallerbach. From Hallerbach the brook becomes Haupeschbach leading you right in front of the Castle of
Beaufort. The impressive ruin certainly invites you for a visit during which you can also try the famous
Cassero, a black currant liqueur still produced in the castle. There are several places to stop and rest in
Beaufort. The Mullerthal Trail takes you along the Hallerbach again out of Beaufort to walk to Medernach
and then until Larochette.
In Larochette, the hiker is welcomed by the impressive ruin of the castle which gives the locality its unique
shape. Larochette offers many places to have a rest and it’s worth taking a break in this picturesque place.
You then walk along the brook White Ernz towards Blumenthal, a part which lies on a high plateau and thus
offers wonderful views. From Blumenthal, you take north heading to Mullerthal. You arrive to
Schiessentumpel, a cute small cascade which was decribed already in Route 2. After almost 1 kilometer, you
reach again the locality of Mullerthal.
Hiking tour I is a walk among the beautiful landscape of forests and rocks in the area between
Echternach and Berdorf.
Highlights during the hike are the “Wolfsschlucht" (the wolves’ canyon), the Hohlay in Berdorf,
the amphitheatre and the Aesbach. The tour is quite strenuous (you walk uphill from Echternach
to Berdorf) and lasts about 4 hours so that we strongly recommend good walking shoes. You
may also just do part of this track (i.e. from Echternach to Berdorf or the other way round).
There are regular bus connections between Berdorf and Echternach.
ECHTERNACH
The City of Echternach was founded by Willibrord, an anglo saxon monk in the year 698 and it
is the eldest city of Luxembourg. The Basilica, the Abbey, the Orangerie are impressive
witnesses of a great historical past.
The market square is quite attractive with its many shops and cafés to stop and relax. Further
highlights are the 4 museums, the Roman villa and the artificial lake with sports facilities.
SCHIESSENTUMPEL
The „Schiessentumpel“ is a small and picturesque waterfall on the Black Ernz river. The lovely
stone bridge and the impressive rocks turn it into one of the most popular excursion spots in the
Mullerthal Region – Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland.
BEAUFORT
Beaufort is situated on a plateau surrounded by a wonderful landscape and perfect walks. In the
north, walking tour B1 passes next to “Klaischen” chapel. A special event every year end of July
is the open-air art festival “Art in Beaufort” which takes place all over the village and the castle.
BEAUFORT CASTLE
The ruin next to the Renaissance castle is wonderfully set in the valley and is certainly worth a
visit. Since this year, an audio guide is available at the entry. After the visit, you can taste the
Cassero, a black currant liqueur, still produced manually in the castle.
SAUERUECHT
This forest offers nice viewpoints on the Sûre valley.
START: Larochette
LAROCHETTE
This picturesque locality (“Fiels” in Luxembourgish) lies in a valley surrounded by woods and
rock formations. The center with the Bleech square is quite animated and you will find
restaurants, shops and hotels there.
LAROCHETTE CASTLE
This majestic ruin overlooks the locality and offers a quite romantic view.
MANZEBACH
This idyllic brook accompanies the walk through wonderful woods until the Castle of
Meysembourg.
MEYSEMBOURG
After having walked half of the L2 tour, you will reach the Castle of Meysembourg
Which is not inhabited at the moment but quite impressive. The castle is surrounded by forests
and a park with pick-nick benches where you can have a rest and take your lunch.
VERLUEREKASCHT
This view point (again) in Larochette rewards you with a superb view on the locality and on the
ruin just opposite.
From the parking, you will walk next to the Sûre river towards the dam wall. In the turn before
the dam wall, walk R 7 leads you into the woods. The path leads through a beech forest and then
over mossy rock formations. You continue up to the rocks where you will find yourself in the
world of the “white lady” whom you can hear singing in clear moonlit night.
You continue walking up towards a crest and a little pavilion from where you can overlook the
Sûre valley.
In small serpentine lines, the path leads us up to vineyard terraces which are still partly cultivated
nowadays. The Mediterranean climate on this south side called “Hoelt” is favourable to wine
growing. In the vineyard terraces which are no longer cultivated you can see dry grass which
bears flourishing orchids during spring.
You continue the on field path through the vineyards and then turn right to get back to the crest
again. You turn left on a superb meadow which gives you a nice view on the Sûre valley.
We cross the road, the pass the “Wingerstkreuz” to get back to the parking.
