Textbook: Stewart, Redlin, and Watson, Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus, 7th ed., Cengage Learn-
ing, 2016.

Prerequisites: The ability to perform all of the routine algebraic operations with accuracy and confidence.

Course Description:
Preparation for calculus; the algebraic and graphical analysis of polynomial, rational, logarithmic and ex-
ponential functions and their applications; systems of linear and nonlinear equations, graphing, inequalities,
absolute value, and complex numbers.

Student Learning Objectives:

1. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will translate and solve application problems
including exponential, linear, quadratic, and optimization problems, and be able to interpret solutions.

2. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will classify various functions, and apply an
appropriate algorithm to find solutions, both algebraically and by using the graph of the function.

3. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will describe the behavior of various functions
and formulate conjectures on the nature of the roots of polynomials.

Course Objectives: By the end of the course the student should be capable of:

1. Defining and developing the concept of “function”, including domain range, graph, inverse, and algebra
of functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, composition).

2. Displaying techniques of graphing polynomials, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions, using
intercepts, asymptotes, multiplicity, symmetry, translations, and reflections.

3. Solving exponential and logarithmic equations and demonstration of knowledge of their applications.

4. Solving a system of non-linear equations and inequalities, by graphing and algebraic methods.

5. Applying the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra and demonstrating knowledge of its consequences.
Determine the possibilities for rational roots of polynomial equation, and obtain information about
the number of positive, negative, complex roots.

6. Performing the basic operations with matrices and determinants.

7. Solving systems of linear equations and partial fraction decomposition.

Technology:

• You must be able to access and utilize Canvas, Desmos, and Zoom.

• You are expected to attend class meetings with your camera on.

• You must have the ability to create and upload Portable Document Format (PDF) files.
NO OTHER FILE TYPES WILL BE ALLOWED.

• Chromebooks can be rented or purchased from the Renegade Pantry.

Course Policy:

• Homework will be assigned on Canvas and is due when indicated on the Canvas assignment.

• Attendance and participation are essential to your success. The material in this course can be very
difficult and cannot be learned by simply watching lectures. It is your responsibility to ask questions
when you have them.

• All exam or quiz conflicts must be brought to my attention in writing (i.e. on Remind) before the
scheduled date and time of the exam or quiz.

• All emails must include a subject header reading ”Math B1A: ” followed by your email subject.

• Behavior that impedes the education of your fellow students is prohibited and will not be tolerated.

Examination Procedures:

• Exams and quizzes will be conducted on Zoom.

• You must have your camera on the entire time you take the exam.

• Once you start an exam or quiz, you will have a limited amount of time to complete the assessment
and upload your answers.

• Quiz and exam submissions will only be accepted on Canvas. Emailed submissions and submissions
through Remind will earn no points.

• Submissions must be readable and have a PDF filetype.

• Quiz and exams cannot be submitted after the assessment ends.

Grading Policy: Homework (10%), Quizzes (20%) Midterm Exams (30%), Final (40%). The following

the course) and a referral to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. Cheating can consist of, but
is not limited to, the following:

• Copying another person’s work in whole or in part.

• Collaboration of any form on quizzes or exams.

• Using non-approved resources on any assignment.

Accessibility:
Disabled Student Programs & Services (DSPS) is available to provide accommodations to students with
diagnosed learning, mental, physical, and/or health related disabilities that are either permanent or tempo-
rary. Students with disabilities needing accommodations, including those who had an IEP or a 504 plan in
high school, should make requests to the DSPS office by contacting the office by phone call, email, or by
visiting their Virtual Lobby. All requests for accommodations require appropriate advanced notice to avoid
a delay in services. After completing the intake process with DSPS, please provide your professors with a
copy of your DSPS approved accommodation checklist so that we can work together to ensure your access
and success at BC.

A note about AB 705: There is a statewide goal for students to successfully complete their Math and
English transfer levels in one year, preferably during their first year. Congratulations, this is a transfer
level math course, complete it and you are half-way to meeting the goal. If you have already completed the
English component, well done. If not it is highly recommended that you enroll in English next semester to
meet the goal.
