Ellen MacArthur
In November 2004, Ellen MacArthur became famous all over the world for sailing around the globe on her own,
without stopping. It was the fastest time ever recorded for such a journey, and she was aged just twenty-eight at
the time.
Ellen Patricia MacArthur was born in 1976 in Derbyshire, England. She first started sailing when she was four years
old. 8.1.  At the age of eighteen, she became a qualified instructor. Then, in 1995, she sailed around the whole
of Britain by herself, winning the Young Sailor of the Year Award. In 2003, she set up a charity called the Ellen
MacArthur Trust. 8.2.  The charity helped many people learn to sail.
A year later, in 2004, she set off in her boat from France to try to beat the world record set nine months before by a
young Frenchman. 8.3.  On one occasion, she burned one of her arms when she tried to change the generator.
8.4.  Fortunately, she solved the problem and she finally reached France after 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and
33 seconds at sea. This was more than one day faster than the previous record. Her record has since been broken,
but no one will forget her incredible achievement.

New arts centre for Parriton


Parriton School has announced plans for a new arts centre, which will be built on
its main site. This will include a theatre with modern technology, a gallery space
and a dance studio. The parents’ association will begin a fundraising campaign in
the New Year. They want to to raise at least £3 million over the next couple of years,
which will help with building costs as well as equipment.
The head teacher, Mrs Pauline Harris, said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for
the students of Parriton, and will benefit everyone in the school. The creative
arts are hugely important for each child’s education as well as for their personal
development, and we are delighted to have been given the go-ahead for this
project. We also look forward to being able to share these facilities with the local
community in the future.’

The toxicologist Paracelsus


Paracelsus is known by some as the ‘Father of Toxicology’. Born at the end of the 15th century, Paracelsus was a doctor, 11.1. 
studied and taught medicine. One of the reasons 11.2.  Paracelsus became famous was his idea that every drug or chemical
had the ability to harm living beings if too much of it was given to a patient. In his opinion, the dose – the amount given – was very
important. Some of his famous studies include those on the chemical mercury, which could be extremely dangerous. Paracelsus
believed that if it was given to people in small doses, it could be safe and a useful 11.3.  . Although we now know that mercury
is more dangerous than Paracelsus thought, his ideas changed the science of toxicology. Since then, many scientists have done

The Headington Shark sculpture first appeared on 9th August 1986 in a very ordinary street in Oxford. The 8-metre-long shark is
positioned actually in the roof of a house. It was designed by a sculptor, John Buckley because he said that he 12.1 to create
