WATER SAFETY
ASSIGNMENT NO. 1
Preferably, by the age four (4) we should learn how to swim because in
this age, children usually are capable to learn basic water survival skills such as
floating, treading water and getting into an exit point. In additional, the American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends this age where children have to learn
to swim. Children, mostly in this age are capable in coordinating their movements
in order to swim strokes and kick their feet which is needed for successful
swimming.
Dry drowning happens when water is inhaled and causes muscles spasms
in the airway which blocks the airflow. Meanwhile, with secondary drowning, it
happens when water is inhaled into the lungs; the water will then irritate the lungs
which could cause them to fill with fluid.
Rip current is a localized current that flows away from the shoreline
towards the ocean, perpendicular or at an acute angle to the shoreline. Rip
currents are dangerous because of its speed which is usually one to two feet per
second which makes it hard for the swimmers or beach goers escape once
caught by this current. Even the strongest swimmer won’t be able to escape this
current and be swept out to the sea.
