Two Sides of the Same Planet
Write to 5 differences between Western and Eastern society, culture, and
individuals in the table below.
Western
• Western culture is more liberal than
that of the East. People in Western
culture are more open-minded and
critical. Westerners are more
forthright and direct. In Western
culture, for example, topics like sex
and childbirth are openly
discussed.
• People in the West have more
freedom and flexibility in making
decisions on their own. They are
free to express their emotions and
vent their wrath if they believe it is
appropriate.
• In the Western world, the wellbeing
of the elderly is entrusted to the
state, which works in partnership
with children or other close
relatives.
• Western education emphasizes
creativity and helps students to
reach their full potential. In western
culture, students are expected to
participate actively in debates and
ask questions. This is compounded
by the extra effort made in western
societies to integrate children with
exceptional needs. They are seated
in classrooms with other students.

• Religion and social norms are
fundamental to Eastern culture.
People prefer to approach with
good manners and tact rather than
aggressiveness, as one example.
• A person from Eastern countries
takes a communal decision after
consulting with their own family.
People want to approach difficult
situations with good habits,
politeness, and discernment, not
with anger.
• Elders are revered and respected in
the eastern world, and children
follow the elders' instructions
without questioning them. An elder
is usually the one to make critical
decisions regarding a youngster.
Children are frequently the ones
who take on the task of caring for
their parents as they grow older.
• Struggle and hard labor are
associated with success in Eastern
education. This implies that if you
work hard enough, you can do
anything. Because they work
harder than western children,
students from eastern cultures
generally excel academically when
placed in a western educational
setting. What the instructor says is
always correct in eastern cultures.

• Western culture refers to the history
of ethical ideals, traditions,
practices, belief systems,
technology, and artifacts that
characterize people's lifestyles and
beliefs in the Western world. The
roots of Western civilization may be
traced back to Europe and include
ethnic and linguistic groupings such
as Germanic, Celtic, Hellenic,
Slavic, Jewish, Latin, and others.
Based chiefly on Christianity, one
sees oneself as a part of the divine
and lives in God's service.
Beginning in Ancient Greece and
Rome and continuing with
Christianity during the Middle Ages,
Western culture was fed by
Enlightenment experimentation
and scientific discoveries and
spread throughout the world
between the 16th and 20th
centuries due to globalization and
human migration.
Children with disabilities are taught
separately in eastern cultures.
• The inhabitants of the eastern
region of the world, which includes
the Far East, West Asia, Central
Asia, North Asia, and South Asia,
have a unique set of beliefs,
practices, and traditions that they
call Eastern culture. The Eastern
culture, which is based mainly on
Buddhism, Hinduism,
Confucianism, Islam, Taoism, and
Zen, tackles the spiritual side of
studying a human being's inner
world, believing that the universe
and its existence is a never-ending
circular journey with no boundaries.
Eastern culture promotes
meditation as a means of gaining
control over one's emotions and
mental state and the virtue principle
in all parts of life. Eastern culture
believes that a human being is a
social creature who is an intrinsic
component of society. Hence it is a
civilization centered on community
and collectivism.
