Chemistry – Grade 8 Salty or Sweet Score: ____________

Objective:
-Design an experiment to determine which is denser: salty water or sweet one?
-Find out which liquid is denser, salty or sweet.?
-Design an experiment to follow the laboratory rules, wear the goggles, wear lab coat, …
My goals in this assignment are design a safe experiment and follow the rules of laboratory.
And determine the density of water when added salt and sugar. Finally, If the density of
water changes, I need to find out which is denser, the water added salt or the water added
sugar.
Hypothesis:
I guess that the water’s density will increase if I add salt. My hypothesis based on the
formula for density, D=m/V. In this formula D stands for density, m stands for mass and V
stands for volume and when a substance dissolved in water the density of water increases.
If I increase the amount of salt in water the density will increase too. My prediction is also
the same with sugar, the density of water will increase if I added more sugar in it.
I am expecting that the water that I added with salt will be denser when these two
substances combined with the same mass and volume. I can observe how the lemon sink to
give an exactly result. But if the lemon sink in both beakers, I will see how deep of the lemon
reach in each beaker.
Materials:
-300 g Sugar
-300 g Salt
-1 L Water
-2 beakers
-Lemon
Procedure:
1) Pour the 500 ml of water into first beaker.
2) Pour another 500 ml of water into second beaker.
3) Measure and take out 300 g of salt.
4) Pour that 300g of salt into first beaker.
5) Measure and take out 300 g of sugar.
6) Pour that 300 g of sugar into second beaker.
7) Put the lemon into the first beaker to observe is the lemon float or sink.
8) Take out the lemon and let it dry.
9) Put the lemon into the second beaker and observe the lemon float or sink.
10) If the lemon sink in both beaker you need to observe how deep lemon reached in
both beakers.
