Phenomenology of contemporary art

Lesson 1: Faith and aesthetics

elearning.milano 428: okay, then let me introduce the course to all of you. And I introduced
myself. I don't know if you had the time and the chance to to see the program on Web. But
anyway, I will explain, you know, a little more about this course. well, I read my short curriculum,
that is More much quicker than what I could explain. So I studied I had did the studies in law at
the University of Turin. I am a lawyer. And interests between fashion and contemporary art.
Fashion Designer and art director for International Brands. I founded also Milano, in 2012, Rice
Cult. It is a culture. Association for Contemporary Art. And I published a book called Rice Cult in
the same say name. That is a book of excellence for collectors. And I have also a website that
you could see about contemporary art, fashion design, food, many subject. It is www.rise
scout.com. Rice cult the rise over called. That was the mean.
elearning.milano 428: Welcome. then I carry on, I am curator of art, exhibitions, I collaborate
with galleries and museums Then I am, I was a contributing editor for Flair magazine. I am
contributing editor for official home the same speaking with columns, on art and fashion. I teach
at the Academy of Fine Arts of brera about facial communication and yet Milan, and Turin and
Bicolca University Milan. So many activities. and the course, Alora.

The first lesson that today lesson, what it will be about, aesthetics and faith. I decided this year.
To change the program and to go about macro themes, that could explain the contemporary
The first one of today is aesthetics and faith. Faith is a personal and painful journey. It concerns
the vision we have of life and of our future. Hope and despair are the different sides of the same
coin. Faith in a Better World. As well as faith in God, or in your body, or in science without a
vision.
elearning.milano 428: A goal a limit.
elearning.milano 428: There is no design object. These are method that we will discuss during
the lesson.
elearning.milano 428: The second less of next week will be art uniqueness and truth. Each
invented activity is a path of freedom and sacrifice honesty and true. There is no absolute
original but the resumption of concepts and inspirations with the new purpose as it's destination.
The image betrays, if the of, if the design object is not a vehicle of culture. Our confession are
united in the precision of their language, the great copies, the mediocre imitates. The lesson
number three will be about identity, freedom, and the gender. Identity is Limiting One's freedom
by choosing a role. An aspect region gender is often the consequence of a social policy that
wants to place us in a predefined context.
elearning.milano 428: To live is to risk and knowingly
elearning.milano 428: re-entering a production cycle, for which sexuality becomes immensely.
As the writer Ursula Leguine suggested. Only by imaging the impossible. Will it be possible to
transform the unacceptable? Listen for Nature of nature. The technological compassion. In the
post computational era nature. Also has changed perspective. From a mere biological leader. It
now moves into a biological direction. Where the terms natural and technological are no longer
in opposition, DNA, and algorithms speak the same language and use the same code. So what
is the new aesthetic and research perspective? Less than five. Belongings and differences. True
culture. This is the I will say a thought of Leopold Cedar singer that was Nobel Prize for
Literature and was also for several years. The president of the Republic of Senegal true culture
is putting down roots and uprooting oneself. Taking root in the depth. Of the native land in its
spiritual heritage. But it's also a protein oneself that is opening oneself to rain and sun to the
fruitful contributions of foreign civilization. The new negritude is not just about black lives matter.
other references also redefined culture belonging Redefined culture For Europeans. It's a, it's a
pity that we don't have any black student because or African student. Is not the same because
many, you know, maybe on in South Africa there are many white people as you as you can
understand. But this is a not just a confrontation about with the black people but or African
people. I mean black about Africa, right? But we can say also black about America, South
America or whatever, the roots are the roots and what it means to have roots. Also is a very
good thinking about with Europeans, you know, We have heard about politics. So many strange
considerations about immigrants. So we need to make through contemporary art our statement.
Lesson 6. Leave and leave in life. Neonomidism. The land is art. The dress as habited a path
that considers different spaces in which to move and leave multifunctional surfaces. To which
ethics and aesthetics memory and future can be interested. Then Lesson 7. Beauty is good.
Good. Beauty is good with the with one or in parentheses. because, Can be beauty is God, or
beauty is good? Beauty is the name of something that doesn't exist. That I gave to things in
exchange for the pleasure they give me. This is a thought of Fernando Pesoa. This is a thought
A quote. Beauty, descendants into the sensible, from the ideal world. Taking shape, the concept
of beauty is linked to that of ethics for which aesthetics is not just appearance. is not just you
know that, for example, Oscar Wilde, the writer, the poet wrote that Is stupid. The man. That
doesn't consider people just from the appearance. And so they teach when since when were
kids that you don't have the judge the book by the cover. But the cover has been choosed. The
cover has his weight. And the weight of the cover is exactly what you will find in the book.
And we is very important all this
elearning.milano 428: because we deal also for your personal path in your in the school. So
you're studying the school and your future profession about image and consideration about the
people. So, we need to deal between a new way of communicating. And also what it means to
have an image. And if these image talks about true, Because you remember, also during the
Romantic Age Romantic Literature in the 19th Century. John Kids Words. Beauty is through the
truth, is beauty. That's all, you know, all you need to know. And so the appearance. Is the truth.
Is exactly as you are and also Jacquela Khan famous psychiatric and philosopher. Said exactly
that. The dress is the monk. You know that in Italy we have said that that tells about Monk and
rest exactly as the book and the cover. But the book and the cover are the same thing. So, we
need to deal and to go deep in this thinking. What we have to do in which direction we need to
look to have a better consideration of the contemporary. And also what is a contemporary? Well
anyway the last lesson would be about the title is that looks that is in late in language that will it
is there is, this is the light, there is the light the light of certain skies. of certain Is forbidden to the
sane. These this is the quote of Marco Ercolalities about. Light and shadow positive and
negative in a story made up of contrast necessary for a clear vision of reality, madness and
creativity. And That what is about? Okay.

Faith and religion.

Faith is the subject of today. What do you think about faith? What This faith for you. Let's start in
this way. What is faith for you?
VANDA VOLCIKOVA: It's a certain set of beliefs. Of any person.
elearning.milano 428: It's a belief. I believe that this could happen, I believe that there will be a
second life. Maybe after death like religion or
VANDA VOLCIKOVA: Yes, I think it's a set of beliefs
elearning.milano 428: the religion, says,
VANDA VOLCIKOVA: that kind of unifies as one faith.
elearning.milano 428: Mm-hmm. So we'll be also the faith of your body. The faith in beauty, the
faith in politics. And this is, for example, a consideration between your body. You know. when
you when in beauty, for example, Beauty. Is truth and truth is beauty. But for the thing that
beauty, Has the same. Well, the image is fused with the person. So the image is filled with the
person because is a screen that we choose aesthetically to tell to other people who we are and
what we think because if we were talking about dresses, of course, but also of aesthetics like
hair makeup and whatever. So it means that if you, if you show to people,
elearning.milano 428: Your aesthetic choice is a risk
elearning.milano 428: because they understand what they see.
elearning.milano 428: And so, it's very important your work: because it's go deep in an image
that the usually is not the truth. It is lying. you remember, the famous, the famous paintings of
picture of Magritt The pipe and was written below. The, this is not a pipe. And you see the
image of a pipe, exactly, because the image is not the object. We are communicating with
images. So we are all lying. Because this is not the truth. These are just images. How many
people handsome good looking maybe kind are evil. Many people. Many people we know
betray because, at the end, we say, Oh, you are not, as I thought you could be Why? Because
the appearance doesn't tell everything. But There is this misunderstanding between the image
and the thing. And we based all the actual, the modern communication about this matter, you
can understand that the way that we call communication, And now, you say the online,
communication? Is fake. so, We are not communicating anything. Anyway, this is another
lesson. But you see how all these matters, they are crossed together. They cross the subject,
they are all crossed and all merged together. So, we can say that faith is a belief. And what is
this belief? Well, I mean, what is concerning is concerned could be could concern anything.
Could concern, as we say, our body, we believe in our body because just the body, tell the truth.
It's not beauty aesthetics. The body if hurts. I I have a pain so I know that I have a pain. I am
sick and so I'm not. I feel it and I prove it. But the beauty lies, the beauty is a fiction. You can be
beautiful and can be evil. So we need to beware about the image, we need to investigate and
we will during this lesson, and this will be very important for your work.

elearning.milano 428: Because, you know, if you are a stylist or a designer, That doesn't know
anything about aesthetics. It's like, for an architect doesn't know anything that doesn't know
anything about materials to build a house. You need to build your house. Not just with fashion.
Fashion is a consequence of the thought. The body is the consequence of the truth. In fact, for
example, tomazo.

What is the difference between culture and nature? For you. What is nature and what is culture?
Do you get it or somebody? So what do you think is the difference between nature and culture?
That is also the difference about
TOMMASO STERZA: I don't know, I think
elearning.milano 428: your work. Sorry.
TOMMASO STERZA: I think the nature is the culture that we were given to, by something that
we had, like a primates. And that we grew up from and the culture is the culture that we
developed from it. That we interact also. So I don't think that they're completely different, but I
think they interact somehow because we we both have them.
elearning.milano 428: It's very confused concept, but Alessandro. Do you have any thought
about that? I don't know if they call you
ALESSANDRO PIETRO LORENZO ROSSATO: Yeah.
elearning.milano 428: Alessandro, Pietro, Lorenzo or just Alessandro, or Pietro or Lorenzo. I
don't know with three names.
ALESSANDRO PIETRO LORENZO ROSSATO: the nature is as you said before, we can be
compared maybe to the object and the culture is what you build around it. Let's say no.
elearning.milano 428: Vanda. Not exactly.
VANDA VOLCIKOVA: for me, it's a nature is
elearning.milano 428: There is. A Who is speaking Vanda or Marina
VANDA VOLCIKOVA: Nature is what is it's not created or interfered with by humans? But
culture is Created by us by influences.
elearning.milano 428: This is a very romantic consideration but is no more valid because they
manipulation. We do about your technology. Would be a technology manipulates nature as the
is the result of a culture. So it's not exactly like that anymore. And yes, Marina please.
MARINA GENOVA: I wanted to say that maybe we can also compare culture and nature to faith
and religion. Because just like culture, religion has rules, you know, and needs a human hand in
order to keep being developed, while, fate to something that naturally flows, because faith and
religion are totally different things in my mind and one is, I think fate is 10 times more natural,
you know, because I think a child is more prone to be faithful than religious. So that's what I
think they have in common.
elearning.milano 428: Thank you, Marina. Then Aura want to speak.
ORAH LAVID: I think Julia raised their hands before.
elearning.milano 428: Okay.
JULIA MOTTA TOURINHO: Thank you. Yeah, I think nature is something which comes
automatically from us, which we were grown up like born with like instinct. We could call it as
well, an instinct. And then for me culture is everything, which comes from the society. Part. You
know.
elearning.milano 428: Let's see, I understood more or less. I understood if you need to express
yourself, you know, also, our studying will be will help you. in express yourself with a property of
language because the precision Of language of terms. Is what distinguish things? For example.
What joint? Art and design, for example. Art is art and design is the design. So nothing to cross
to compare with nothing. So, Art. And design speaks the same language when they speak in a
precise way. Precision is what joints art with design. We cannot do. We can do just in that way.
There is not another way to do it. If I want to express these thought. I need to do it exactly in
that way. Exactly. With that words. There is not not another way to, to express it. And When we
if, as you're working fashion. You understand that centimeter is not a centimeter or less or a
centimeter more address. Well, a fabric is not that kind of fabric is not exactly like a keen fabric
something that imitates that kind of fabric and all must be exactly in that material. Otherwise, it
doesn't fall in the right way, is not exactly that. Look and we can see we can perceive it. So The
color, also the color, the shades of colors. That, you know, to choose a shade of color. And for
example, as your fetish shade of color would be exactly in that way. Exactly. That shade is not
another shade. For example, when you buy you ask your mother to buy a white T-shirt. Mama,
can you buy a white T-shirt for me? And she said, I bought your white T-shirt, it is on the bed so
you're going to bed. And you see that that white is not a white you want. And this difficult to say
to your mother, this is not exactly the right wide. And she said, But you asked me why is white,
he's not that white. and that is difficult to make people understanding that the shade is not
another shade that the word And also the sound. Of our voice is not exactly another sound. And
this makes the difference. What this means, it means that. As Gilders wrote in a beautiful book.
The logic of sensation that is about Francis Bacon.
elearning.milano 428: That was a very important artist of the 70s in England. And that I think
you, you know, Francisco, you don't know, maybe Jill de Los. I write it down in the chart so that
you can have the reference. Because maybe I talk about matters that you won't find in the
notes. Okay. Well, this is the book. Jill, Dealers, the Logic of Sensation. Exactly. I don't know if
this is the title, the name in English, the title in English but the logical censione that is edited by
Qualibet. You can find it.
elearning.milano 428: Very easily is very important book
elearning.milano 428: about Gilders. And he was in a certain point of the book. He is a focused
on the rhythm. The rhythm of life. So we have all the rhythm of life, the written in aesthetics, for
example, in visual art is painting. Colors forms. Weights. But regions, in music in the sound is
music. So everybody of us should get written. Getting the written it means, for example, for
human beings nature. Breathing. And there is the yoga that teaches you how to breathe, why?
How to breathe? Because they say that brief is important for your health because it gives the
rhythm of life, your buyer eaten. And also, when we do a presentation, for example, in fashion,
We want music, right? Or as Balenciaga. No music, why? Because we want to give a written
message. Because and these written messages, this sound makes the thing. Perceived in a
better way in the deeper way. So you make people understand that they are not just things on
catwalk. But there are, there is an idea on the catwalk and the idea made by music the written of
colors. The sequence of colors, the sequence of forms. Makes a story. This is why we are
consumed very much about all these production of a presentation. They should be exactly in
that way. No faster, not slower. Exactly that way. And the precision of the language, for
example, when you enter in a museum, of contemporary arts and we see you see, broken
bottles, broken bodies, blood everywhere and you say, but And If I, Go in. A classic museum,
classic art museum. We see harmony. We see harmony, we see the concept of beauty of all
Roman and Greek people that were looking for exactly. That. Endless beauty, perfect beauty,
the perfect shapes that express harmony serenity, peace. That was the concept of beauty. But
then we subjectivity in our time. We are not looking for one sense of beauty. The common
sense of beauty. But we divided beauty in many aspects. That beauty is what I believe is
beauty. This will concern the lesson about beauty, but we anticipate some concepts right. And
beauty has to do with the good. as Plato say, is Plateau Road and said and wrote Well wrote
another one Socrates but about about Plato but Plato said That beauty. Is good. So what is
beautiful for us is good and also Emmanuel Kant. Sorry if I talk about philosopher about art.
Concepts are made by philosophers. And so it's a philosophical language that you need to
understand because also concern your matter. You want to create beauty or you want better to
create something meaningful. That that's is our concept of beauty the meaningful. That means
something from us. So when we, we enter in a contemporary art, museum, we say, but is the
concept of beauty totally change in the day we don't, or we don't have a exactly concept of
beauty. Because if I said, if I take a Venus status of Procedale. That was the most famous
sculpture in the Greek era. We are talking about the sixth centuries before Christ and now, A
sculpture now of Jeff Koons. What is the difference? We immediately perceive the difference.
Even if in a serious. over sculpture, Jeff Koons was using some classical. Forms. For his
statutes. Mixing. With a bowl. Blue ball. In which you could reflect your image. So it's a it's we
can say that contemporary art is a big huge and many ways performance. It involves the viewer.
In the artwork. Calls you. In the artwork. And what is art? Then we are talking about
contemporary art. What is the contemporary and what is art? Art. I'm not making up this
question to you. Today, I'm good. But what is art? How can you define art? It's impossible. Art.
Is something that is a useful? No, use
elearning.milano 428: No goal.
elearning.milano 428: There is just a vision of somebody that cannot do anything else that are
But we know that that piece of our communicate to us. So when we are in front of the real piece
of art, we feel You know, freezing. Because we understand there is something that calls
something that speaks to us. And so this is the job of art. Make us thinking make us a unique
thing. Understanding is a way of communication of communicating each other. by art through
our and what is the contemporary? for example, catalog time for you that you know me, what is
contemporary the when we say, This is contemporary, you know, also for fashion and design,
the contemporary design and we are contemporary the contemporary aesthetics, but at the end,
we are talking about with terms with words that we don't know. The meaning, What is the
contemporary for you all?
CARLOTTA LAVATELLI: Like, for me, it's something that is related to the times we're living in. I
mean, in my personal opinion,
elearning.milano 428: And your personal looking is wrong.
CARLOTTA LAVATELLI: Okay.
elearning.milano 428: And for you all well I think you all had these idea and in general students
tells me that the contemporary is what is surrounding us? That these is these moment. And is
wrong. It's totally wrong. It's not that the contemporary this is the nowness. The contemporary is
something different. And there is a beautiful expression of the very famous philosopher. Italian
philosopher from from Venice - Giorgio Agam, tYou have also some text in the in the
bibliography. Giorgio Agam said, did a very give us a very good imagination about what could
be, could be expressed about contemporary the contemporary for Giorgio and then is the sky in
the night with the dark and the light of the stars. we see the light of the stars that are For our for
us, the fullness. So what is surrounding us? What we can perceive would. We can understand
and see exactly as reality and then there is the dark, the darkness Is the contemporary. So the
the darkness represents the light of the star so far away from Earth. That they cannot arrive to
us. We cannot see. But there are, you know, They are there they are. There we know that there
is something behind the darkness. And this is the contemporary. I want to also, quote, To tell
you the quote of another philosopher, Friedrich Nitschze triggered nature. Said, that is not
exactly. The contemporary man is not exactly the one who correspond. Exactly to his time. But
is the one that for a part of himself is already projected to the future. That's why, when we say
contemporary, we are not saying exactly corresponding totally to our time, but is something that
is already has already a new perspective that is going towards. Going further on going beyond
to the future.

The what we call next step because of these, Everything is a slow for us. Everything is already
said already already seen. When we say about aesthetics of fashion, for example, that we We
have difficulties of identifying exactly what will be the next shape. What where are we going to?
Why we are going in that direction? Is because we don't do. The correct investigation. A fashion
designer. And is, for example, I teach in Turin methodology of trend investigation for fashion.
And when I started my lesson, I asked the student they were, you know, they are waiting to
understand what are the trends of fashion. Say, you are not expecting me to say. What are what
the facial trends are? What and they were quite, you know, shocked about these because they
say, Well, this is what is the course about but they say no The course is about a methodology.
to investigate, how to make a trend is not to read the trend because to read the trend, If I tell
you that this trendy the pink or the new black, that is a romantic instead of fetish or now, that is
more fetish and than romantic back. I I tell you something that you believe it, or you don't
believe it is always a matter of faith. I believe it or I don't believe it, but aesthetics is not a matter
of accepting or not accepting. Is dialectic. Is a dialogue, is the talk. That's why I prefer that our
lesson are not just me talking but also You know. To exchange thoughts because maybe you
could have some good ideas. And so we can work on it. We need to make a thought a common.
Thought and that is the result of a dialectic. But who can do dialectic without knowing?
Knowledge is the first thing, studying is the first thing these are, you know, this is understanding
that what? Because we are talking about beauty. Because And we all have. As we say, the right
way or the personal way to see beauty, because now beauty is very personal vision. We need
to talk about it, but it is not Facebook. We are at school, we need to study philosopher to
understand poets writers. These are the people that will help you in your study. For Also and
especially about fashion and design. Otherwise, you will be lost without any references.
elearning.milano 428: We will see in summary in the I think the next lessons, I don't know. Don't
remember anyway, we will see Ensemary. That was Unluckly died with his wife during the
Pandemy.
elearning.milano 428: One of the most important designer. Italian designer saying that if we
don't have a goal, If we don't know that from zero, our study must have a goal of perspective of
one. Exactly goal that we want to reach
elearning.milano 428: like Piero del Franchesca, Leonardo, Davinci whatever. Salvatore Dali
So we can divide instead. I can grow up in step step by step.
elearning.milano 428: I will tend to reach that goal. but if I don't have a goal, I just, you know, Go
around. The. way of mixing things and thought, and way of saying that, I am good and they want
to tell you that I'm good. And so is no more aesthetics but is the pleasing the market and I want
the success. I want the applause of the market, the clapping hands. This is not art. This is not
your
elearning.milano 428: Goal, You are not working for success. Yes, maybe success will be the
consequence of good work. Money will come with it. Serenity and a good life will come with it,
but this is a side effect of your the joy that you will prove about your life. That is something that
we will say later when we will talk about joy. That also Jill de Los said about was written. He
wrote about about what the meaning of joy because otherwise, we think the joy will be the
opposite of sadness and is not You understand that the precision of the language makes the
thing. Makes the truth. Of the thing is not the fake. We are based, we are basing. Our profession
about the fake. that I don't tell that is good or bad, but we need to know, We need to
understand. Understanding and knowledge is joy. Joy is not happiness. The joy, the deep joy
that you can prove. Is to understand when you understand deeply, a matter. You live in joy. This
is the meaning. Then going back to our concept of contemporary. About Nietzsche. So, this is
fashion. Well, I mean no, we wouldn't say that Nietzsche was talking about fashion but
indirectly? Yes. Because fashion is always in advance, you know, we are not working on time
but we are one year ahead. To be yes just one minute. I finish my thought or I okay so, if we are
ahead, one year, it means that we are not thinking with the Thought in the consideration of
nowness of our time, but we are one here ahead. Looking for the Is the aura? Yes.
ORAH LAVID: I just wanted to ask please, if you think that this is also somewhat it goes and
hand in hand with the difference between culture and nature. Because nature is what is the
present and culture is partially what is
elearning.milano 428: Of course, of course, that was my
ORAH LAVID: if I understood you correctly, okay?
elearning.milano 428: purpose to arrive with the big big trip to the point. That was also my life. I
wanted to do, when I was very young, I was painting. Painting, painting big pictures always in a
room. Then I was afraid to get lost and to become crazy. Really the feeling was that and there
was, I had no teacher and made me understand that, that was how to deal with that. so, I
abandoned the idea to have art studies and I went to touring to study law, but at the end life,
always put yourself in front of a mirror. You can lie to yourself, you can procrastinate. You can,
you know, Say I do it later, but at the end, you need to do it. You need to face your image of the
mirror. And at the end, I came around around and I did some picture and send it to an
international competition for design and then they won. Can you imagine from a little village in
Piemonte? I won an international competition. The next day old people, just talking to me. We
saw you at the television because was also television program, You know, with Versace gave
me the price and say that I was very talented. Can you imagine for a kid of 20 years old? Well,
kid at the time, I was kid that somebody like Versace, Johnny Versace tells you that you are
very talented because you don't see things like somebody else you believe it of course. And so I
believe that so much that after my study I was working in fashion but Fashion is not enough
because when when you start thinking about fashion and understand and see asking yourself,
why? Why they say that I should do a long dress? Instead of a short? Why a trend instead of
another trend, why should why this cycle of, you know, and recycle of things why things and
concept so you start understanding that maybe there is art helping you And they start being
dealing with art and being a collector of art. Then I said, I would like to write something about art
and with a friend of mine that he was a very famous gallerist In Milano. She said, Well, this is
my office. You why you don't write something about this artists. So I wrote and she said, You
know, that you are writing very good. Why you are not you don't take in charge about talking
and writing and you know, be the Creator with me about some artists and so I start doing that.
And one day, you say why not doing a book of art but how you can do a book of art And
everybody say you need to have a vision.
elearning.milano 428: What is important is not what you do.
elearning.milano 428: This is a consequence of thought.

elearning.milano 428: What is important is to have a vision. If you don't have a vision about the
perspective of where is the where you want to go? You cannot do anything. You are just a
follower as Trump could say, You are a follower that is not bad, that many people are followers.
You need to be brave and to have a vision and the vision must be true. It’s the faith in yourself
in what you consider to be your path in your growing. That makes you good or not in what you
do. And everybody is staring because they say, Oh my God but this is something more about
dress. Yes. Because it's not a dress. the pipe is not a pipe and a dress is not a dress because
my vision is You know, over the dress. Of course, I expressed it with the dress with the model
with the set. Like maybe usually we do it in in a photoshooting for example, or in a performance.
But is different because I am expressing something else and people perceive and understand
something else. Not the dress anymore, they understand the dress. Is the tool by which you
express an idea. and what we are consuming about when we do a set, I don't want to criticize
your work as the stylist or designer. Not even my colleagues that teaches you how to do it but
you understand that we have different purpose because if you're if my colleagues teach you,
what and how I teach you, why? and the how and what are the consequence of how if you don't
think if you don't study, if you don't know, and if philosophers any thought any culture You
cannot do your work. Well, you do it as followers. That is good. I mean you can produce
because how many followers we see you know in the well once we're in you know writing down
about about fashion in the in the magazines you know how many bullshits everybody
everywhere. Everywhere is the new black is the new trend is this, but there is a beautiful
interview of that you can find this on YouTube about Yohji Yamamoto at the DNA Museum in
London during his exhibition, The creator that was a blonde. British lady asked to introduce to
the audience Yoshima motto saying This is Yohji Yamamoto. This is one of the most famous
world fashion designers. And he was laughing and just crawling the head like no no And and
she said, Oh my God, I'm a grown no, it's your not. I I am the Creator. I know it and he was
saying, No, no she said Sorry, there is something wrong that I said and he said I'm sorry. I am
not a designer. Because I'm not dealing with fashion. Can you imagine? And she was, you
know, totally embarrassed and say What no fashion needs a trend, and then needs another
trend, and another trend because has to change. Always, I do always the same thing. I always
do black. I consider all the colors very good, but for me, black Are the knights that I was a kid
with my mother as refugee under the bonds in Tokyo, during the Second World War, when my
father was at war, this is the meaning of the black for me. And if you understand that you are not
buying Yohji Yamamoto thinking, I'm wearing Yohji and black, no, you are not wearing just that
He said. For me, I do always the same thing. I'm not doing fashion, I am a dressmaker We are
losing these. We are losing the capacity the to be able the capacity. To understand that address
can be addressed. That can be not addressed. And we are losing with the communication, the
online communication made by the image. That the image betrays and also that the thing is not
the result of a concept. If there is not a storytelling that expressive but the storytelling that we
read on Instagram, for example, Our b*******, they are not talking about nature or agenden or Jill
delays. No, they are saying about sustainability inclusion, inclusivity. You know, things that can
join. And can make people understanding that they are on the right side. But we are never on
the right side. We are always on the wrong side of it, that's why we are tending to be on the right
side. And this happens just with knowledge. With studying anyway. Nature and Culture. Nature,
is what? Surrounds us. Everything. culture is when we say, in Italian, Cuandole one mochi.
Metallamano, when there is the Interference. with the men that is culture, for example, I'm
watching a tree. The tree is nature. but, When I think about the tree is culture, is the nature
filtered by my vision. The vision is. The vibration, the frequency of colors. and in light, that
comes through the nerve, the optic nerve arrive to the brain fuse itself with a gland, Fuse itself
That we have inside our brand. It is, there is a gland Just spread these sensation fuse with an
idea and spread about all my body in the chakra of my body feeling. That's why the frequency of
the frequency of colors is the same for everybody, but the way over perceiving colors is different
by people from people. So I perceive the red not. Maybe, as exactly the red, that aura perceive
or an Allaura, perceive Is different. We are perceiving the the universe like our own universe.
This will be the matter of adolescent. With I will I will shock you with the revelation that I had a
studying and also the Quantistic Physicalistic. It's incredible. What we think? That is reality. Is
not reality. Is a possibility that will be that reality. So nature. Is what surrounds us? culture is
what is filtered by the human being Everything that is filtered by the human being. Even just the
sensation. A feeling. Is filtered by the humans and becomes. Culture. Why we do these
epistemology. Talk. Why we pass from Science to? Talking about physics and science. To art
and philosophy. And faith may be religion. because, because, Faith in science. And you know
science apply to health, for example is called medicine. And it's purpose as hypocrisy says, is to
avoid avoidable evils. avoidable Is way of proceeding. You know, that Aristotle was the son of a
doctor.
85:01 elearning.milano 428: and he reminds us one very important
85:03 elearning.milano 428: concept, that is not a drugs that heals But the drugs helps nature to
regenerate itself. That is another concept, too. So this has to do with mortality, the concept of
death. For great people death was a fact of life. In Electable. We know that we are gives the
sense of our life. you know, if we could live forever, we don't have the sense of life, the sense of
life, every every positive things should be expressed, but his negative, We don't know if you are,
we are good, we are in good health. If we don't know, what is the sickness? We don't know how
to be happy if we don't know, what means to be said. What and for example, there is a beautiful
book, over a very famous anthropolog that is uvalarari and the book is Amadeus, that talks
about it what means for the men to be Happy. If you ask, if I ask to you, do you want to be
happy forever? Do you want? never get sick to being good health forever and maybe never get
never die. You all say immediately? Yes, because this is good. But what is good for men? What
is the ethic side of it? This we will see a bit later when we will talk about attic, what is ethic for
men? Because it's not a matter of aesthetic and this talk is also talk. That is very common. Now
in fashion, what is a tick fashion instead of just fashion? Is understanding if it's good for us or
not in this way. As we are studying contemporary art, for example, we need to understand what
is good for us or not. Is it good to be at my lesson or not? Is it good to think in this way or not?
Are good. They are useful. These investigation. Or not. Anyway. The Christians arrived. And
Christians gives they gave hope. Of a new life. The. Ransom of our sins or the forgiveness and
you know, during some of the bad life in a better life. So these as the result of also, Over
scientific superstition. because, The figure of the doctor for example. With the miraculous
healings. Is like a priest? Is like fusing religion, beliefs, and scientific the science has to prove
that this healings Has. Nothing to do with. The Biology. but, With religion with miracle. And
effectively, this is also. The consideration of time. For religion and science. For example. the
religion says, that the past you see is seen The present is redemption and the future is
salvation. And the science says that the past exactly the same, the past is ignorance because
we didn't have all the knowledge that we have today. The present is a research. And the future
is progress. what we say invasion the same So, we should say that design. Says the same thing
that science and the same thing that religion. so when you say fashion is my religion, you are
not just playing the Influencer the intelligent Influencer but maybe you are saying something
good. Something interesting. Something Anyway. The. Religion. and the science had a sort of
interference with technology. When technology came very strongly in our life. And changed
totally our vision. Totally With the promise, everything must be done. We can do all. And that's
why, or no, It was another girl that was saying about Nature. I thought about biology. We can
also modify nature. We through biotechnology, we can modify the DNA. Some artists do that.
They modify the DNA. For example, we will see in the future lesson Eduardo Coq, that is
Brazilian. You are not Will maybe knows about Eduardo Kak. That is the founder of the Bio-art.
And Eduardo Ducac, did cock with the K, A C. He did he modified the DNA of a rabbit? Fusing
changing the DNA of it. Merging it with the DNA of a jellyfish. Flourishing. And the and the poor
rabbit became flourished. And he did with many other animals like butterflies, frogs snakes,
whatever. And everything he turned everybody. All these objects of art into object of art.
Investigation about changing from the deep nature. So once art was the representation of
nature. A painting of a landscape. The sculpture of the body. Is not exactly in this way, but just
to make it simple. And now is the modification of nature. You understand that there is
technology. That through science and faith. Comes in and make these new consideration about
everything is possible. I can do all. So, if I can do all. How to stop it. We cannot stop technology.
to progress, and to progress, it means that The, the challenge is to get our life better. Get this
world better. A better a better place. So, the problem is ethic is no more aesthetic. Is 80. How
far? We should. Go. In these investigations. What is the limit? That we will give to these
progress. Because we cannot go on and on and on whatever. At a certain point we need to stop
and think what is good for us. Because it's not true that everything from technology is good. For
human beings. We are as pieces. Through, you know, among other species. And we all
understand that must be. There must be a limit that is ethic limit. And what is the function of r if
not make us understanding the limit? art has this function also, To make you understand that
there is a limit. Is not whatever. There is a limit and the limit is etic. For example, art is never
violent. Art can talk about violence. But is not violent. so, What we consider about Art? Is.
Useless. Attic. And aesthetic. Not just one vision, had many aspects that we should consider.
And what is your job about then? We understand, especially nowadays. That your work is about
aesthetic. Technology and ethic. And Is a mix. If we you have just one vision, you are not
correct. You should have many different aspects of your job considering the many different
aspects of life. We used to say that. when people stop believing in God, Is not. He's not true that
they don't believe in nothing. Is that they believe in everything? And this is what happens.
Nowadays. nowadays, you know that the faith of in technology, Had. An aspect called
technotheism. Have you noticed that I prepare? A PowerPoint full of images. I, I will give you the
word in a minute one. We just one second. i as always, I prepare a PowerPoint for every lesson
full of images till now, no one. Till till now, I didn't show any image and this is not weird because
in a world and in a communication just made of images. just talking about, you know, Between
ourself.
97:14 elearning.milano 428: About the important matters.
97:17 elearning.milano 428: Is the deal. We don't need to see. To understand. we and we think
that we understand, just by the side, But aside to see exactly to see. Not just to look. To give a
look, just to see. You don't need the eyes. You need the brain. You need your imagination. This
is the word that you should do. Also, when you do styling or design, Problem art, that is another
great philosopher, French philosopher. French I write it down the name. In chart. Roller. but, I
there is a one of these book in the bibliography or maybe two. One is the white chamber, then
the ed, also the black chamber, or the dark chamber or something like that. Or the Dark Room
or the White Room. Something, I don't know the name in English, I know just the name in
Italian. Did you camera Kiara camera skura that is has to do with photography? He did a book
about image photography and whatever. Also about about the writings of the very incredible,
incredible philosopher, He said that the correct way to see an artwork is not just watching it. But
standing in front of it. Close your eyes and go your head back. That's is the way how to see
correctly and artwork to feel it. When you feel you close your eyes, have you noticed? When
you kiss somebody? And you love him so much or so much. And you close your eyes. Or when
you need to feel the taste of something some good. You know. Meal. You close your eyes. Or
when you have to remember you close your eyes. Because the site is disturbing. you don't
have, you don't need because of these, because of these, we don't have to to see the
contemporary. We need something else. We don't need images. Are all about, just our
imagination. There is another philosopher, Sorry. I am really a quote of everybody, but
100:30 elearning.milano 428: this is a very important book that is
100:37 elearning.milano 428: about these French philosopher George the Uberman That is a
Jewish philosopher, French Jewish philosopher. They wrote.
100:53 elearning.milano 428: A very important book.
100:55 elearning.milano 428: That is images. Despite all. in Italian is, Just to because I have it, I
already in Italian, not in French, but This is the title in Italian. And it is about. The. The ears that
follow the Holocaust. After that images. In the Philosopher field. Philosophy matters. We were
asking ourselves if that kind of what kind of images could be possible after that images, after
those images? If it's possible to produce other images after that images. And he start the book.
102:06 elearning.milano 428: With a very important thought.
102:10 elearning.milano 428: That is. Imagination. What is imagine? Sorry, what is imagination?
Imagination is knowledge. You don't understand if you don't imagine. and you don't imagine if
you don't know, knowledge opens, not just Opens the capacity, the ability. To be better. In what
you consider. Sorry. but also, To prove. To understand. What could be? At that time, that kind of
life. If you don't. Dress. Well in Italy is to be in the dress of somebody in England, in English is to
be in the shoe of somebody and somebody should If you don't walk with a shoe of somebody of
that one, you don't understand. You don't understand, you are just making. A very fake course
duration. But not a true consideration. about what could be and when you say in your work,
Because I am a designer. I know what you are looking for. That's why I'm talking to you about
contemporary art in this way. I'm not just an earthquaker, I'm not just an Arctic. I am a designer.
and I'm doing both and that's what is useful for you to talk somebody that talks your language
but with a different perspective, Because otherwise, I'm not talking like umbrella to people that
wants to deal with art. That is something else, but I'm talking to designers to stylists that are the
new designers anyway. so, What is imagination? Imagination is just a fantasy is not fantasy at
all. Imagination is creating a new a new consideration. Through knowledge, otherwise is fake.
What they say that is imagination, creativity, creativity doesn't exist. Creativity is the capacity,
the ability to do what you want to do in the best way, the ability to do things. The creativity is not
a matter of fantasy of creating something odd. That's why the fashion nowadays is fake is just
following a market, not even creating a market, following a market following the generation that
But the generation said is, without faith. You or your younger brother and sister other generation
Zed. Maybe you're a bit old to be a generation that but I was talking about technotism. You
know that there is technical reason. Is. God, when technology. Or better. Technology is God.
but there are There are association in America of technologies. that are dealing with the new
gods, and the new religion about About artificial intelligence. By a. for example, there are two
one is way of the future. Way of the Future was found by Anthony Levandonsky. And these the
site is in America. And they are considering merge between technology and human being.
Generating a new man. That is a mixture. Benebrid and abbreviation between technology, the
new biotechnology and men and human beings. and they believe, as a really as A new church.
That. This is their God. you know that the 37% of the generation Z they don't believe that could
be possible to prove the the existence of God So, it means that they don't have. A, They don't
have faith and they, they don't believe. What they believe then. If they don't believe in God, we
say it before they believe in everything. Not that they don't believe in anything, they believe in
everything. These are empty. Does That can be fulfilled with what you want. So you understand
that faith is not just a matter of religion. But faith is a fundamental way. To look. Towards. A
direction. That could be ethic. Good for human being. There is another one. Id. AI. That is was
found by vines. Lynch. And they. Did a very strange thing. But not very strange, but they did it
with artificial intelligence. They informed machine about the Bible. They recorded on the
machine, all the Bible and give to the machine. The possibility to generate. New Thought,
religious thought new religious verses as the Bible. But not. By the Bible. The Bible was just an
example. To the machine to get what could generate. And they are believing that the machine is
God. That the machine is the symbol of technology could generate instead of men, more and
more and more. Norms. That they could follow. So, you understand that? All these matters. All
these questions are incredible. Well, sorry is my dog that is sometime. She Understand. And
yeah. Say. so, we are talking also about faith in Ourself The. Awareness. The awareness that
everybody is talking, I think the many of my colleagues in the studies say you need to have
conscience to be conscious to be aware. There to have responsibility to have ethic to have a
good vision or these things. but, We need to. Put in order all this concept. Faith in Ourself. The
self-esteem. Arise from an awareness of our state. Listen, this words. Knowing your limits gives
the meaning to our abilities. And the desires for improvement and for knowledge. That is exactly
what we said before, knowing your limit. Is not. Not considering the capacity that you have. But
exactly the opposite. You need to know your limit. because, since we are, we were children. Not
me because I am of a different. Agent. So we had different education. Better. Because not
because we were more intelligent or my parents were more interested. I had the luck to have
intelligent parents but nowadays, we for example, we are suffering. A narcissistic society. I know
because you understand, because you are dealing each other. And you understand when you
need or when you need to find the man or a girl like, you know, but oh boy is the same. That
tells you something intelligent. And that for for which you can be fascinated and in love. for how
we He is or He is my God. Is not easy. And why, because there is nobody talking to you.
Because everybody is talking to themselves. Because they are narcissistic pathologic message
nurses. You know. Narcissus, you know that the story about noses. That. He never had it.
Never had any. Impulse, any move to love to love somebody. So one time he was Near a pond
by a pond. And the look is mirror is with as in a mirror in the clear water. His image and he fall in
love because it was very beautiful. And they fall in love but he couldn't. Breach. He couldn't
understand who was the guy? So beautiful. And what sense had to love. Somebody not existing
or that you cannot reach. And he died when he found found out that he was himself. Echo. That
was a sort of goddess that love ceases but he didn't look, he never looked at her. She was
punished by those because of junonus, was a very tumble story. And she could never love
nurses. And so she went away on the mountains. You know, just consumed and erased by law.
And remained of herself, just a voice, repeating the words of other people, how beautiful he is to
explain things. In this way, in this. Very easy normal and deep way. That just mythology, Greek
mythology, had the power to do it. so, The mirror, the identity that will be another lesson. The
mirror, the identity, their awareness of ourself. We think that we look at the mirror, we should.
Like what we see? but we don't, We have. We never like what we see. because, We are not
considering what we see. Exactly like Narcissus. That's why we do Selfie. we do Selfie to find a
perspective of ourself that we like, and what we like, and why we like, We like, because
Somebody else like it. So we are talking about through images. Through beauty aesthetic. That
is not our consideration of static. But is the consequence of the thought and the like of other
people. So we are looking for the acceptance of other people. That's why we are Narcissus.
Nazis doesn't talk to you. Mothers talk to himself. That's why we are on Instagram, for example.
there that even if there are groups, there are solitudes. Each one just is. By himself. So, we are
not a collectivity but we are singularities. Narcissistic singularity. That they don't like themselves.
And they are looking away. Through other people. To like themselves, they are looking for
approval. To like themselves. This is the society. This is the Influencer. The Influencers. Are
Influencer. Because they are looking for the approval of other people. Many likes much power.
What it means that you are good. No, it means that you are looking for the approval of
somebody else. Who is the crazy that is leading by the approval of somebody else? If I ask to
you, Or if to love somebody, you ask the approval of your parents. Or your friends. Or the priest
that is your confessor or whatever. No. you say if I like somebody's because I like somebody,
But at the end when you are on Instagram, You are you have a A sense. In life just because at
somebody else approve. Your way of seeing your way of doing your way of living. What is an
influencer and influencer is somebody that has a vision? I don't want to talk about the correct
vision or of wrong vision. We put just generically adhesion. And this vision has a power, when
When there is the approval of many people, many lives much power. So, you are not thinking by
ourselves yourself, you are thinking to wait the approval of somebody else.
119:07 elearning.milano 428: And when you risk never, You never risk.
119:12 elearning.milano 428: It means that you never get your life
119:14 elearning.milano 428: because to live mean to risk.
119:19 elearning.milano 428: To expose yourself if you remain in your room. Of course, nobody
critic. Of course, because you are in your room. Nobody sees you, nobody knows you. Nobody
interfere with you. But if you get out of your room out of the box, It means that you are risking.
Exposing yourself what you do Designer and stylist when you dress,
119:47 elearning.milano 428: or when you do set your risk, you
119:50 elearning.milano 428: expose your idea, you show your idea to the world. And you are
aesthetically risking because this is a really to expose yourself just to make people
understanding or misunderstanding you are
120:07 elearning.milano 428: But you accept that risk, this is
120:10 elearning.milano 428: your profession. But what happens if the power you have is the
approval of other people. You start thinking. to look for the approval of other people, you are no
more risking You are You are just waiting the approval of other people. You are following the,
the famous. You say? Marketing Investigations. you know, when you do marketing
investigations, Is very funny because then they are I will start the course a new course in yet
Milano that they ask me that is very interesting. They ask me to do one of the three teacher to
deal with in the first year for people for students of fashion marketing. to do this kind of course,
Not contemporary contemporary art, but to make them understand about cultural references.
And my deal. My purpose is To make them. Thinking, in the way we are thinking now. Because
without a vision you are following a market. you are not creating a new market because it's
impossible to create new market, if you don't have new visions, and we, when we see, for
example, all the fashion shows on the recent Paris and London New York, Milan Fashion Week.
We are really disappointed because we see merchandise. We don't see any thought. Any
thought? Nothing you? Because there is Not a new thought. Nothing new because there is no
search no research. And especially not textile research. That is the material that we are working
on. Everybody is talking good, inclusivity sustainability of a car. Well, I mean, what are you
talking about? If you don't do anything about If you don't do anything about What we are not
stupid. We are dealing in a world that is polluted. That in the 2015. they say that was, you know,
the terms the point of breakdown that after that 2015 Everything will be Ms and everything is a
mess. that there are tornado in Italy that never had, you know, the climate change is under our
eyes And the resources of our planet are finished. No, more resource. in in China, as our
Chinese student could say, now they, they are stopping the use of some electronic tools
because also air conditioners and so on because They are. They have energy with cool. Mostly.
And there is they want to maintain organic, Organic. Energy instead of clean energy like
America. With the oil. The petrol. It's impossible. We cannot do anything and in the 2050.
Everything will be f***** up. I won't be there. Or maybe, yes lifted. But Probably won't be there.
And because of these, I would like to suggest you to see A very beautiful movie. That is the first
Reformed. Have you seen it? I write down. First. Reformed. You can find it on Netflix. And
because of these, I would like to show you. Two moments of this movie. It is about what we
spoke about fashion. Sorry. Faith. Religion. And science. We could say nature. Nature and
Culture. Faith. Religion Culture. Faith religion planet, because also Religion Planet. What we
are talking about sustainability is the faith. In the green. Green is the faith. instead, what we
have seen on the catwalks Flower prints. I mean. If I were in your shoes, I will be very angry
because if you just, for my head, the b******* about sustainability inclusivity, and then I see on
the catwalk flower prints, it means that you are foolishing me. you are You think that I am
stupid? You think that I consider your collection? Green, because you have. Flower prints. Well,
I mean It's weird. We have arrived to the limit. In Georgia money. That was the first one. To
commend after the urine. And after the pandemy With wrong, we were wrong. We need to
change your fashion and and everybody. Yes. But other Georgia money. We are, we are with
you and we cannot sustain this unsustainable business and the creativity and the designers,
and the buyer, and the pollution. And then what To do the same catwalk. With the same thing in
the same way. Saying that is green because you have flower prints but f*** off. Because this is
at the end, there is a how I say in Italian in the fan. Culo liberatorio you know, the the f*** off that
make you free, you know, and lighter, you know, you say Basta Basta and we are in a school.
That is dealing with all these matters and we try to understand by good teachers. Like my
colleagues surely are About investigations, about what? I am, I have enough of this world. They
don't know if you arrive at the third year to have enough. Something has to change. And the if
you don't change it, nobody will. Because a 30 years old, you will be considered especially in
Italy still young. Still assistant of somebody, if you don't invest in yourself. You will never find a
place that you will be, you know, trusted. There is not trusting young people. We we educate
them in good school, but then we don't trust and we Start, and we keep on. Letting them
growing growing growing, what? He grow in, what we need, We need to change these
mechanism because this is really, really evil. But now I would like to share with you. This
beautiful two moments. Of. I tell you, just What is about? Where are you? Because it's just
sorry. Like, what is about first Reformed is a church. In America. That was the first Reformed
church in America. The protagonist is a man that was a pristine in the in the military base. And
also his father had this career. And he suggested his son to go to Iraq to defend freedom for
America. The son. lived to Iraq and I So he had the crisis he gets separated to the wife because
when there is the death of Son is very difficult to maintain the couple together. And and he
started working as a beast in, in a reformed church. A girl arrived to to the church. That they and
ask. Why? I need your help because I am a green activist and my husband too. I am pregnant.
And my husband says that the world will be evil. Will be really bad in when when my daughter or
well. Well my son will be will be will grow up and so it doesn't want to leave. This world to made
to my son and doesn't, it doesn't accept the fact that my son could live in in the, in a bad world
and you know, of course in impossible way. So, this is the scene when he talks. To. To this
man. That is explaining. To him his reason why he doesn't want to have a baby. have And ask
to the priest. A word. Of faith. That he could believe in. But the priest that lost his faith when the
son died. things and say words that are good words, intelligent words. But not. Not true words.
They are not authentic because it doesn't believe anymore. so,
131:55 elearning.milano 428: It's a very, very important movie.
131:58 elearning.milano 428: Do you prefer? Well I is in there is English language but do you
prefer with Italian subtitle, or without subtitle? I asked today.
132:16 CARLOTTA LAVATELLI: I mean, it's the same. It's okay.
132:19 elearning.milano 428: I know that for,
132:21 CARLOTTA LAVATELLI: Wait.
132:22 elearning.milano 428: It's got okay with the I don't want
132:22 CARLOTTA LAVATELLI: like also with
132:25 elearning.milano 428: you to lose the to lose the words because the the dialogue is very
132:30 elearning.milano 428: important is for me is the same tell
132:33 elearning.milano 428: me if you want to subtitle or not.
132:37 CARLOTTA LAVATELLI: I mean, yeah, if you want, it's okay.
132:42 elearning.milano 428: Okay. Okay, a lot just one second. and present, or Experimenter.
It's okay. Something wrong. Why doesn't work?
134:20 VANDA VOLCIKOVA: You can also leave a link in the chat and we can all watch it by
ourselves.
134:29 elearning.milano 428: Oh, hello. Hmm. you see when I say, when you say, Either. So,
when I say that, that is the absolutions of the electronic tools, that doesn't let that to do things.
But there is another way that I did. Well, but why was functioning before? It's just because it's
too heavy, maybe to see in with on Google meet Yeah. Well. The first, the look, the movie is first
reformed. And is on Netflix, watch. It is very interesting. And it is exactly about our matter.
Because if I give you the I don't have maybe yes. Maybe I do. I did I did it just I did I did it just
one second That I check. The. No. also in this right now, I know, yes. I hope I can echo. Okay.
Maybe I try because I selected some scene. And I try to see if I can do it in this way. I hope is in
English, because anyway, we would say
138:43 CARLOTTA LAVATELLI: We can't really hear anything.
138:47 elearning.milano 428: no.
138:47 CARLOTTA LAVATELLI: No.
138:50 elearning.milano 428: You you see but you don't hear.
138:52 CARLOTTA LAVATELLI: Yes, exactly.
138:55 elearning.milano 428: Can you? Maybe because I have my alarm. The Dominic is was
an Italian artist really, very vanguard. That he never wanted. The documentation of his artworks.
It was basically a performer. And a visual artist. And because he said that the documentation of
these artwork was exactly the point of view of the one who could document, his art is piece of
art. And so it was a personal perspective about His artwork. It was not exactly the art, what it
means this. It means that Exactly. What we were talking about, nature. And culture. So, when I
see an artwork, I see by my perspective because I perceived these artwork. By the frequency of
light and colors that comes through my eyes in my body. And that I interpret And with my
person, and my story. so it's not, there is not Nothing. Original what we can say. Original doesn't
exist. Everything is an interpretation. A personal our personal interpretation of the world. and in
this case of an artwork, so it means that nature what we think, what we say about nature.
Difference about culture is just culture, because what we perceive is not exactly what it is.
Because there is nothing as it is. Everything is filtered by our being our personality, our DNA
filtered by our history, from now, till you know, the frog that we were in the prehistorical time so,
it means that it also Apostropheo. This is an Italian lesson is Dio. In Italian, is God as well. It
apostrophe means about me. So exactly is what we were saying if we want to make a resume in
a world, in an artwork, in this way, about what we Spoke. During our first lesson, is this about
me about myself? You know, like a SELFIE like you see? Because we are a community today
and God as an entity that we could have faith. In. we already are, there is a thought that I wrote,
I don't understand how I can do these. Take it out, these just stay condominant of business and
we get the only No, no doesn't with this, if I if I
159:22 JULIA MOTTA TOURINHO: I think, I think you're you're a thingy is
159:28 elearning.milano 428: I cannot hear you.
159:30 JULIA MOTTA TOURINHO: I think your scream is frozen because we still see the first
page and I don't know if you already on other
159:37 elearning.milano 428: Oh my goodness.
159:37 JULIA MOTTA TOURINHO: page.
159:39 elearning.milano 428: I am another page. Let's try and now.
159:46 JULIA MOTTA TOURINHO: Still the same.
159:46 elearning.milano 428: Still the same.
159:47 JULIA MOTTA TOURINHO: Yeah, maybe you have to.
159:49 elearning.milano 428: To go back.
159:49 JULIA MOTTA TOURINHO: Take it off and on the eggs. Just stop sharing and share
again. Maybe this will work.
159:57 elearning.milano 428: Like this.
160:01 JULIA MOTTA TOURINHO: Yeah, no.
160:01 elearning.milano 428: Oh, okay. Now.
160:06 JULIA MOTTA TOURINHO: Yeah, we on the second.
160:06 elearning.milano 428: Still the same.
160:08 JULIA MOTTA TOURINHO: Not a second page. I don't know if you're on the second
page.
160:11 elearning.milano 428: So is the, you know, I am on the second page. Can you read the
second page?
160:19 JULIA MOTTA TOURINHO: Yeah.
160:20 elearning.milano 428: Okay, great. So it means that when I put the white screen is not
working. Get great Aurora. When people stop believing in God is not true. That they don't
believe in anything. Like we said before, because they believe in everything, The confusion that
characterize our times is exacerbated by the great opportunity, that present themselves to us
the reconsideration of the meaning of terms such as body feeling, soul, conscious awareness,
desire seduction, love empathy of daily use and for the most absolutely obscure forces us to
confront, our rampant, magnets of purpose and recalls that need for order and meaning that
escapers. Before the dress said, there is its reason as intimate research, that has nothing to do
with the clothing market.
161:24 elearning.milano 428: If anything, with the risk of a line,
161:29 elearning.milano 428: a vision of making the contemporary visible, I don't know if this will
work. There is a. I don't know, was just some some scene of space. Oddities 2001 by Stanley
Kubrick. And let's see if it works. It works. No, it does. Okay. No, it doesn't work. So just we will
just see images. Do you know these people? Is this they were called they work is an Italian
group of architects called the Super Super Studio and they were from Florence and we are
talking about a group of that was graduated architects all together in the 1966. The name of
these people are adolfenatalini. Well, you will find all these information on the notes that I will
put on. On the Web. Anyway. They were the exponent of what we call. The radical architecture
and this could be very interesting to found you students. The radical fashion design. Because
what we need now is radical thought in radical, not because We are referring what we do. with
the classicism or the classic. Because we see we saw, we are seeing the interpretation in these
in this period, in the recent collections. This is and last season, the season before about the
coming back of classic, but in fact was not good. Well, because, you know journalists, they don't
know about it, they talk, they talk about nothing. Exactly. Or they talk about business. That is
better. But they don't know about why the classic and the classicism that is maybe come back of
the radical, radical way to see design. They are still relevant today. For example, in this In these
artwork. In these rendering because they were doing rendering. Is the monumental continuum.
That is the continuous monument. And super. Super surface. That were there two emblematic
art was better, express their idea. Express They had a big success in 1972 when they exposed
in an exhibition at the moment in New York. These you new domestic landscape in these
weighted contain or the continuous Mom Monument. Is this these monolith that you will see
going around the planet Earth always the same. They didn't want any aesthetic. And shape that
could express anesthetic idea. But some sort of monolith that could go around the world by
which you see the skyscrapers of New York or Manhattan and out of it. That is the order and
disorder. The disorder was the history of architecture coming out to a new order, a new radical
order by Democratic. And In the sense that was the same, every countries, all around the world.
A lot of what is the meaning of these artwork? That is a work of architect but we cannot we can
we can give a perspective of artwork is the failure of architecture to impose a new rationality on
the contemporary era. They were working with photo montage. And that was their former
representation of an ideal. Premable order to be transformed into a work of art. With a
continuous moment momentum monument, sorry architecture becomes art but not to abdicate
itself. But because thanks to the happy intuition of substituting images for words and theory is
full view, Iraq, one of the component broad, it can hide it through in infinite game of possible
interpretations. Above all multiplying questions. And suggestions by a fooling, an enigma and
continuing to present for future generation of architects. And think something from which the
draw inspiration. With a continuous mom, monument architecture becomes art. And you see
that? There is. There is a really eradical think radical thought about what is architecture and
what is art I go on. You see these? Is a always the continuous monument going around the
mountains and landscape and it generates a surface that has no aesthetic expression. no And
also under the water. You see goes up and down and nature and culture comes out or around
itself. These were also a way of living you see the surface is transparent and we can see the
landscape through it. these continuous monument had the surface that they called the Super
Super Phase, the super surface that you can live in and do and obtain every everything you
could need to leave on that surface so you can leave exactly as a New Age era just without rest
naked like in priest, but through technology This is very interesting. Because these images can
give you. I know because I'm, I'm working as our director and These images talks to me exactly
in the same way they talk to you. About is exactly what we are talking about our time. So is
about a new or maybe primitive way of facing nature and living in contact with nature through
technology. so the perspective that these are towards, give to us is very modern because Is our
perspective of nowadays we want to live in a better way. In a better nature. We feel as human
beings that we would like to live in maybe a primitive way. But we understand that this is
impossible without technology or as another very beautiful movie. You remember, The director
was Sean Penn into the wild. When the young guy just want to quit the civilization, and go into
the nature, choosing not to be a part of the system. So he erases just throughout his credit
cards and everything is mobile phone. Everything that can be can connect this guy to
civilization, but you need to accept doing these also, the bad part of it. That nature is not good
or bad. Nature, doesn't have a moral. Men has have a moral has a moral nature, doesn't have a
more viruses as the pandemic show. They have their purpose is just to multiplicate to, to leave
to leave in nature and reproduce themselves. So, We understand that if we want this kind of life
is just through technology, not without technology, otherwise we can accept to lead to die at 20
years old of a sickness that we don't know. If you accept these, you can leave whatever in
contact with nature knowing that nature is evil. That is not good or bad. The nature want to take
advantage of. You also doesn't want your good. And there is a beautiful book about these of
Richard Dockings. I know the title in Italian is Ejene, Egoista. So that our genies are egoist
because they don't want our good or bad, they don't want us to progress but they want them to
progress you when they want to be them to go on to carry on in life. And also, these other. The
sketch and the project of of these asset. Imagine, how beautiful could be a set like this in the
States, maybe in Arizona, or in Africa, or in Brazil, where the nature and the landscape are
fantastic with these surface. That is the contact between nature and culture through which we
can leave in nature through technology. And I think that these are also example or I just talk
about for to I not I'm not talking just to stylist, but can you imagine a catwalk in this way? How
could be incredible. And some expression of it, we had already in the car talking Venice or on
the you remember a few years ago, the couture of Fendi with lagerfelda on the internally. So
merging culture and fashion together. Like the expression we have seen in the fashion shows.
Here is something else here is merging our vision of the surface with no static. So eradical way
of exposing static. With nature comparing. With nature and talking, you see the the source of
energy with all the strings that come out? These cable that come out of these sources of energy
that element, that gives the, the source of energy also, for the plants and for humans that can
take advantage of this situation. advantage A world without products and ways an area where
the money is energy, raw material and also the final product, the only intangible object of
consumption. Exactly. This was the statement of the Super Super Studio. very interesting work,
if you want to deep in this matter, I will give you all the note here. You will have in all the notes
and then look because we'll be exactly a very, very meaningful search. Well, these are some.
These are some images referred to. Religion, symbols. That is the cross. So how These
symbols can interfere with fashion. And some yes. Some other bright like loneliness and some
lost pain of stingency that you see a shirt by Christian Dada with this is like That's about you
know it's like a statement on on a T-shirt. We've seen many of these garment with the with
Some some thought written on this is a heavenly bodies. You remember, is was the The
exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in the 2018 where all the famous Amazon just expose
some dresses to that was referred to religion. I see that is 12.3. I don't know if you have another
another lesson afterwards. And I wouldn't like to be for you to be late. I'm waiting for your
response.
178:53 VANDA VOLCIKOVA: Don't.
178:53 ORAH LAVID: We don't have.
178:55 elearning.milano 428: Sorry. I cannot hear you.
179:01 ORAH LAVID: Now, we
179:02 VANDA VOLCIKOVA: We don't. Okay, go.
179:06 elearning.milano 428: no, not
179:06 ORAH LAVID: Now, we don't have a lesson now.
179:09 elearning.milano 428: You know do you want that for two minutes? I finish at least the to
let you see
179:19 VANDA VOLCIKOVA: Yes, thank you.
179:21 elearning.milano 428: these exhibition of Emily bodies or okay. No one, no problem. And
this, especially this photo, this image is taken by Katarina. Jab, Katarina Jab, as you will find in
the notes is An artist, very interesting artist that they know here in Milano. We had an exhibition
together, many years ago and She reproduce, not just the documentation of the exhibition, but
she fragmented the exhibition in France. As you can see, because As we can understand now.
This is her vision of the exhibition, so our frames. That compose images. So is another way of
focus. You know, when we are out of focus that we want to focus, it exactly. This is the meaning
the the dresses are as inalaya on the left, Balenciaga alcidinal of the 92, then Balenciaga of
1960s, 7 and Versace of the 97 Here on the left moschino on the right if the center and Just a
focus, a close-up on the work of textile. The manual textile, and manipulation of embroidery that
were shown in this exhibition. To believe in sufferings. Exactly. Is that I want? Maybe before
leaving you to read. To read the text. And I'm reading it because I go quicker and so maybe we
can discuss it next time. About joy. You remember that we are talking about sufferings
compassion, empathy? compassion. And they want to read you about what I wrote about Joy,
We often ask ourselves how to achieve happiness. I think that these interests you And don't
understand that. The true joy of life is not only moments of pleasure. Conquering, joy means
being able to accept and understand. They understanding of horror and suffering or what can be
further away from our individuality. It implies union with what surrounds us the total acceptance
of life to the point, that it could repeat itself indefinitely without ever repeating for a single
moment. Joy means living deeply and intensively. Every moment in a sinful in a symphony
made of passion pain, pleasure suffering, and amazement. Saying yes to existence in all its
form. Is joy. Society, often leads us to believe that good and happiness are represented only by
what pleasant life can offer us. It's built on beauty on the right to happiness, on the impositions
of lifestyles that stop at the surface of existence. To endure life, doesn't mean to leave. To leave
is something more. Something that has to do with a strong passion. And instinctive violence and
the fusion of order and disorder. Beautiful and ugly forms and formless. Unizian Art. Wants to
convince us to the of the eternal joy of existence except that we must see this joy not in
appearance. But behind appearances. in the abysmal depth of joy, there is always the death Of
subjectivity that is instead what we are teaching in school, subjectivity wins? No way is not true.
We need to have less subjectivity and more joy in what we do. So is the death of a subjectivity.
There is never a sense on oneself when one is in total pleasure. It's a distraction in Joy, in the
world of Dominic Ori. That was a philosopher. But joy is also that availability of the soul which is
openness to the world. Spinoza. That was a philosopher of the 17th century notes. As sadness,
anger fear, etc, all those, he calls sad patience of the main dimensions of closure to reality.
They close you your cocoon of suffering with respect to, which reality is felt so far away in a
distant background and always filtered more or less heavily by your pain filter. In this sense, Jill
de Los will write commenting spinosa, only joy has value. But joy that is caused by something is
perhaps still a small joy. It's a joy with the cause. And therefore, always in danger. And always
will of going down. There is another kind of joy, a joy, without a, cause a joy without an object.
As John Klein calls it. It's a joy that is my being embodied in listening. no longer a joy that this
experience is compared to that, but the very place of experience experiencing the vastness in
which every event or maybe there happens. And Jill. The loser says, an ethical project cannot
remain on the level of a speculation. But must find a way into the field of practice. Spinosa's
conception of joy provides. The lures with a key to access this area. The feeling of joy is the
strictly ethical feeling. It is to practice as affirmation is not is too speculation. So he suggests get
joyful, get active, joyful practice. Brings ethics back to ontology. it uses the producibility or
modularity of being is not easy. I understand. Sorry. Oh my God. Okay. I'm sorry for the
Obserish of solution. So I tool You understand that? These matter are not easy to understand, I
know. But are very fascinating because we understand even if we don't understand everything.
But we understand, there is a true behind this. I will send on drive all the notes about so that you
