Oral Medicine Course


(ORMD 501)

Welcome in oral medicine course, it is one year course for 5 th year dental student.
Oral medicine is dealing with various oral changes occurring in the oral & para-oral
structures including Lymph node, salivary gland and TMJ disorders, how to examine
these lesions and give provisional diagnosis for such cases.

Course Description:
1- one lecture one hour/ week
2- one clinical session 2 hours/ week
Clinical part

In the clinical part of the course, cases representative of the primary and secondary
oral disease studied in the didactic part will be evaluated and discussed with the
students (differential diagnosis, working diagnosis, the need for the further diagnostic
procedures, treatment, referral ...etc.)

These cases include:


1. White lesions.
2. Single and multiple ulceration
3. Central and exophytic lesion
4. Pigmented lesions
5. Acute and chronic infections
6. Systemic diseases with oral manifestation e.g. diabetes, dermatological
disease…etc.
7. Lymph node and salivary gland swellings.
8. Orofacial pain and TMJ disorders.

Students assigned to individual cases are required to follow up the patient’s


management (supervised by a faculty member) and to subsequently present their
completed cases to the class . Case presentations should be supplemented with initial
and follow up clinical photographs and radiographs as well as with histopathological,
laboratory investigation and consultation reports.

It is a requirement of the course that every student present a complete case,(1 st&2ed
presentations)

Course Objectives:
The objective of this course is to enable students to acquire the clinical skills required
for the diagnosis and management of primary and secondary diseases affecting the
Oral and para-oral structures. These includes:

1- The ability to obtain and evaluate the patient’s dental and medical history and
to perform a complete systemic examination of the oral and peri-oral tissues.
2- The ability to recognize and thoroughly describe the deviations from normal
and to establish a working diagnosis based on a differential diagnosis.
3- The ability to select and use appropriate investigations and consultations
needed to determine the treatment required and to rationalized different
treatment considerations i.e. the need for emergency dental care, medications,
referral and follow-up.
