Learning requires individual guidance, personal attention and overall

individual efforts of the learners. Self-Learning Kit may prove to be a boon for

students due to their enriched features. They perform the role of an efficient teacher.

Students become independent thinkers and learn to accept such responsibility.

This Student Learning Kit for Grade 9 helps especially earners to inculcate

self-study habits and develops self-confidence which is essential to enhance

learning ability especially in computing problems involving percentage composition of

compounds.

2
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:
1. identify The components of salad, factors to consider in
salad preparation, and different kinds of salad dressing
and their ingredients;
2. select and use correct equipment in preparing salad and
dressing
3. prepare a variety of salad and dressing; and
4. follow workplace safety procedures

Tell the classification of the salads below according to the

ingredients used

3
Different types of salads and salad dressings are a staple
in the culinary world. There are many types of salads to
master, some easy and some difficult.

The following is an example of computing for the percent

composition :

Sample Problem 1: Determine the percentage composition of H2O.

Given: H2O (formula of the compound)
Atomic masses of the element present :
H = 1 g/mol
O = 16 g/mol
Molar mass H2O = 18 g/mol

Required: % H and % O
Computations:
a. % H

4
% H= (#atoms H) (at.mass H) x 100
molar mass H2O

%H = (2) (1 g/mol) x 100

18 g/mol

%H = 2 g/mol x 100
18 g/mol

%H = 11.11 %

b. % O

% O= (#atoms O) (at.mass O) x 100

molar mass H2O

%O = (1) (16 g/mol) x 100

18 g/mol

%O = 16 g/mol x 100
18 g/mol

%O = 88.89 %

Sample Problem 2: Calculate the percentage composition of aluminum nitrate,

Al (NO3) 3

Given: Al (NO3) 3 (formula of the compound)

Atomic masses of the elements involved;

Al = 27 g/mol

N = 14 g/mol

O = 16 g/mol

Molar mass Al (NO3) 3 = 213 g/mol

Required: %Al, %N and %O

Computations:

a. %Al

5
%Al = (#atoms Al) (at. Mass Al ) x 100
molar mass Al (NO3) 3
%Al = (1) (27 g/mol) x 100
213 g/mol

% Al = 12.68 %

b. % N

%N= (#atoms N) (at. Mass N ) x 100

molar mass Al (NO3) 3
%N = (3) (14 g/mol) x 100
213 g/mol

% N = 19.72 %

c. % O

%O= (#atoms O) (at. Mass O ) x 100

molar mass Al (NO3) 3
%O = (9) (16 g/mol) x 100
213 g/mol

% O = 67.60 %

Sample Problem 3: How many grams of Ag are contained in 150 g AgCl?

Given: mass AgCl = 150g

Atomic masses =

Ag = 108 g/mol

Cl = 35 g/mol

Molar mass AgCl = 143 g/mol

Computation:

% Ag in AgCl = (#atoms Ag) (at. Mass Ag) x 100

molar mass Al (NO3) 3
%Ag = (1) (108 g/mol) x 100
143 g/mol% of 150 g of AgCl is
%Ag = 75.52 %

6
Analysis: 75.52 % of 150g of AgCl is 0.7552. thus,

Wt. Ag = (0.7552) (150g)

Wt Ag = 113.3 g

Sample Problem 4 : Toothpaste contains an active ingredient, the sodium fluoride,

NaF. Calculate the percentage composition of NaF.

Given: Formula of the compound (NaF)

Required : % Composition

Solution:

Na : 1 x 23 = 23

F: 1 x 19 = 19

The molecular weight of NaF is 23 + 19 = 42 g/mol

% of Na: (23/42) x 100 = 54.76 %

% of F: (19/42) x 100 = 45.24 %

The percentage composition of NaF is 54.76% Na and 45.24% F.

Let’s see if you understood the lesson well.

7
Answer the following problem:

1. Calculate the percentage composition of aluminum hydroxide, a gastric

antacid.

2. Glass is a common substance used in windows, artware, kitchenware

and the like. Only a few compounds can exist in glass forms. One of
these is silicon dioxide, SiO2. Compute the percentage composition of
SiO2.
3. Determine the percentage composition of the following compounds:
a. NaHCO3
b. Ba(OH)2
c. (NH4)2SO4

The percentage of each element in a compound can be

determined by dividing the atomic mass of each element by
8
the formula or molecular mass and multiplying the quotient by
100.

II. Labelling
1. The Ingredients of a product are often labelled in mass percentage
composition in by manufacturers. It is easier to understand the amount of
an ingredient in the mass percentage in comparison to the mole
percentage. Products include food, chemicals, medicine, etc

10
1. The tag inside of our t-shirt tells us what percentage of our t-shirt is
made of cotton.
