Protective Coating System for Electric Motors

NC13-01-2013

1. SCOPE

1.1 OneSteel Protective Coating Specifications cover the surface preparation and
protective coating systems for steel structures, piping and equipment.
1.2 The surface preparation and coating procedures shall be carried out prior to
installation unless otherwise directed by the company's representative.
1.3 All damaged areas shall be made good after erection.
1.4 The contractor shall furnish all equipment, material, including coatings, tools and
services to perform the work required under this specification.
1.5 Only a coating contractor approved by the company shall carry out this work.

2. LIMITS OF WORK

2.1 The company's representative shall define the limits of the work under this
specification.
2.2 Completion of the work will consist of acceptance of the finished job by the
company's representative after the required touch ups.
2.3 Weld margins of approximately 75mm shall be left uncoated at the edges of any
sections.
2.4 The faying surfaces of all bolted joints shall also be left uncoated.

3. SURFACE PREPARATION.

3.1 Weld spatter, oil and grease shall be removed.

3.2 All corners shall have a smooth 2mm radius to allow for effective protective
coating thickness.
3.3 A sharp angular surface profile of 50-70 microns (2-3mils) is recommended as a
minimum, but manufacturer’s requirement shall be achieved.

4. COATING SYSTEM

4.1 The coating system shall consist of the number of required coats applied by
airless spray or approved application system to achieve a minimum total dry film
thickness (DFT) required by the protective coating specification.

5. PREPARATION FOR COATING

5.1 In planning, provision shall be made for accomplishing work in spite of obstacles
caused by weather and other local conditions. The contractor shall familiarise
himself with site conditions in case special precautions are necessary.
5.2 Surface preparation and painting shall not be carried out in wet or excessively hot
or windy conditions or in the presence of industrial fall-out, which in the opinion of
the company's representative is excessive. The coating shall not be applied when
the steel surface temperature is below the dew point (resulting in condensation of
moisture).
5.3 The contractor shall thoroughly familiarise himself with and carry out all aspects of
the manufacturer’s requirements and directions for the mixing and application of
the approved coatings to ensure that the durability of the coating system is not
impaired by malpractice and that the finished job is satisfactorily carried out.
5.4 In cases where abrasive blast cleaning and painting operations must be carried out
in the same area, the blasting work shall only be allowed when the paint film is
dried to the extent where the abrasive does not adhere to or damage the coated
surface.

6. THINNING

6.1 Thinning, if required, shall only be carried out in accordance with the
manufacturer's instructions using the specified thinner in all cases.

7. APPLICATION OF THE COATINGS

7.1 The contractor shall use the manufacturer’s complete coating system and not mix
with other manufacturers products unless authorised in writing by the company's
representative.
7.2 Before the application of the first coat of paint and also between coats, where
applicable, the surface shall be cleaned with brushes or dry compressed air.
7.3 The contractor shall fill out Inspection Report Sheets for Coatings (AS3894.12)
and a Daily Inspection Report Sheet (AS3894.10) to ensure the requirements of
the specification are met.

8. COATING THICKNESS

8.1 The minimum total dry film of the completed coating system shall be that specified
in the paint specification, as measured with a "Mikrotest" or similar approved
gauge.
8.2 The thickness gauge shall be regularly calibrated using standard coating thickness
test panels.

9. HANDLING OF PAINTED STEEL

9.1 Special care shall be taken during transport and erection of the coated steelwork
to ensure that damage to the coating is minimised.
9.2 If slings are used for lifting, these shall be cushioned from the coating to prevent
damage.
9.3 Should any damage take place, the damaged areas shall be touched up
immediately after erection according to the procedure given in Clause 10 below. It
shall be the coating contractor's responsibility to carry out touch-up work.

10. REPAIR OF SITE WELDS AND DAMAGED AREAS

10.1 Any damaged area and surrounding surface shall be mechanically abraded and
the coating repaired with the topcoat to achieve the required DFT. For weld areas
or where damage extends back to the steel, it will be necessary to abrasive blast
clean to AS1627.4 Class 21/2 or power tool clean the area to AS1627.2 Class 3
using a power coarse grit disc sander. Immediately following surface preparation
apply the specified primer by spray to achieve that specified in the specification or
a minium of 75mm DFT. The remainder of the specified coating system is then to
be applied to achieve the full DFT for the completed system.

11. APPEARANCE OF FINISHED COATING

11.1 When set up, the film applied in each coat shall be free from sagging, blisters,
craters, pinholes and other defects.

12. SUPERVISION

12.1 It shall be the responsibility of the contractor to provide experienced supervision of

their workers. It shall be the responsibility of the supervisor to assure performance
of the workers in accordance with the criteria established by the specification in
order that the finished work may be acceptable to the company's representative.

13. INSPECTION

13.1 The contractor shall provide access to the work by the company's representative
at all times.
13.2 Satisfactory performance shall be based upon acceptance of the completed work
by the company's representative.
13.3 Where possible the surface preparation shall be approved by the company's
representative before commencement of the coating application.
13.4 Copies of completed Coating Inspection Reports and Daily Inspection Reports
should be retained by the contractor for reference or if required provided to the
OneSteel Coatings Inspector.
13.5 The contractor shall be required to recoat inadequately prepared and incorrectly
coated areas at his own expense.

14. SAFETY

14.1 The Coating Contractor shall obtain copies of and be fully conversant with the
Coating Manufacturer's Material Safety Data sheets for the products used.
14.2 All coating manufacturer's safety recommendations and OneSteel safety
requirements relating to on-site work shall be strictly adhered to.
