Paint System 253

1. Scope
This specification describes a paint system of a coat of Corlar® 2.1 PR an intermediate coat of
Corlar® 2.1 ST, and a finish coat of Imron® 2.1 HG or Imron® Industrial Strength topcoat.

2. General
Modifications or additions must be detailed in Section 6.

3. Surface preparation
Prepare the surface in accordance with SSPC1-SP-6 (ISO8504-3) Commercial Blast Cleaning.

4. Application
4.1 Handling, mixing, re-coating, drying times, and application methods must be in accordance
with the manufacturer's written instructions.
Note: Recoating of Corlar® 2.1 ST should be done as soon as possible after dry to touch,
a minimum of 3-5 hours at 70°F (21°C), up to overnight. If recoating is done within 30 days
and you have not exposed the Corlar® 2.1 ST to strong exterior sunlight and elevated
temperatures over 90°F (34°C), you should water wash with a minimum of 1500 psi to
remove any surface contamination prior to coating.
If recoating cannot be done before 7 days and the Corlar® 2.1 ST surfaces have been
exposed to exterior sunlight and elevated temperatures over 90°F (34°C), you should,
water wash the surface with 1500 psi to remove surface contamination followed by a
brush-blast to a SSPC-SP-7 (ISO8504-3) sweep-blast to provide a light roughness to the
existing coating prior to application of additional coating or topcoats.
4.2 On the same day as the surface is cleaned and while still dry, apply one coat of Corlar® 2.1
PR to a minimum dry film thickness of 5.0 mils (125 microns).
4.3 When the prime coat has dried sufficiently for re-coat, normally 2-12 hours, apply a coat of
Corlar® 2.1 ST at 5.0 mils (125 microns) dry film thickness.
4.4 After the intermediate coat has dried sufficiently for re-coat, normally 2-12 hours, depending
on film thickness, temperature, humidity, and method of application, apply a coat of either Imron®
2.1 HG or Imron® Industrial Strength topcoat at 2.0 mils (50 microns) dry film thickness to
provide complete hiding and uniform color.
4.5 Total dry film thickness must be 12 mils (300 microns) minimum. Maximum dry film
thickness must not exceed 18.0 mils (450 microns).

5. Inspection
5.1 All prepared surfaces must be inspected and approved by a Chemours representative prior
to coating application.
5.2 Dry film thickness of each coat must be measured as described in ASTM1 D7091 for ferrous
and non-ferrous substrates or use SSPC-PA2.
5.3 The completed system must be inspected visually for skips, holidays, hiding, and uniform
color. Defects shall be repaired before final acceptance.
