Dear Dr.

Bruce,

After completing your Technical Writing course, I have gained some new skills and honed others. These skills are the
student learning outcomes (SLOs) of the course, which were developed through informal and formal works produced.
The application of the SLOs is showcased in each of my works. The portfolio is comprised of five works, three done
independently and two collaboratively. To begin viewing my work, scroll down past this document to the “Technical
Writing Gallery” to start, after entering the first page you can move between pages by going to the bottom.

The first page to access is the “Extended Definition” for Global Positioning System. The SLOs for this example include #1
(Rhetorical Focus), #2 (Ethical Research), #3 (Persuasive Arguments), #4 (Organization and Focus), and #5 (Academic
Language and Design). The application of SLO #1, was making the language for the general public, by considering that
the definition would be used in an encyclopedia. I achieved SLO #2 by finding general information to use, and citing
properly using the Number System. To apply SLO #3 I made a persuasive argument using principle of operation from
Markel’s definition techniques. SLO #4 was applied with design techniques, alignment and repetition. Once at the
bottom, you’ll see a link to the following page.

The second page, “Markel on Design” is an informal assignment showcasing my evaluation of graphics supplied by
Markel and how they can be improved using his design techniques. My application of SLO #4 and SLO #5 are achieved by
discussing improvements of the graphics to effectively communicate their data, by organization and design. This
example includes SLO #3 by having revised graphics to show how proper design makes them more effective.

The third page, “Definition Generation Ideas” is another informal assignment. The assignment involved brainstorming
using Markel’s Definition techniques. SLOs are #3 and #4, since the techniques by Markel kept my brainstorming
organized and focused. This was achieved by using four categories from Markel.

The fourth page shows my two best sources from “Racism and Diabetes: Annotated Bibliography” created with a team
of four members. SLOs included in this example are #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, and #6 Collaboration. This project showcases my
research and design skills, by designing the website, my sources, and graphics.

The last page, “25-Word Summary”, I show the summary created with my team and include a version that further
improves on the team summary. The SLOs applied in this example are #1, #2, #4, #5, and #6. These skills are showcased
since I needed to modify the language, cite the source, comparing my summary to the team’s, organizing the
information to be communicated, and collaboration.

At the top right of the website there are links to “ABOUT ME” and “CONTACT”.

The portfolio shows my application and proficiency of the student learning outcomes. Through practice and application
these skills were sharpened in the Technical Writing course. Which I am already putting to use at work in my technical
papers.

Sincerely,

Jeffry Salazar
