2 How do we map matter?

This assessment will be marked according to the following criteria:

● B (inquiring and designing)

● C (processing and evaluating)

The maximum level achievement is 8 per criterion and the level descriptor
for each achievement level is mentioned at the end of the assessment.

The following is assessing students according to criterion B (inquiring and

designing) and criterion C (processing and evaluating):

Activity: Stomach ache

ATL

Information literacy skills: Collect and analyse data to identify solutions and make informed
decisions

Critical-thinking skills: Gather and organize relevant information to formulate an argument;

Interpret data

Some foods cause our digestive system to produce excess acid, and this can lead to discomfort as
indigestion. One way to control this is to use an alkali to neutralize the excess stomach acid produced.

Work in pairs.

You are food scientists working for a public health agency whose job is to test the effectiveness of
different indigestion products being sold.

Your teacher will present you with a range of chemical substances that might be used as indigestion
remedies.

Safety
Sciences for the IB MYP 2: by Concept

Although you may be testing

stomach remedies, remember
that in the laboratory all
substances should be treated
as chemical reactants – do not
put anything in your mouth!

Inquiry question

If we are suffering from stomach ache then what will be the possible remedy for it
and if we are using alkalis to reducing the stomach ache then what will happen to the
pH level of acids present in our stomach?

Background:
What is neutralization reaction? (add the relevant equation)

A neutralization reaction is a chemical reaction where an acid and a base are

combined with the intent of producing a neutral pH level. The relevant equation is
Acid + Base ➝ Salt + Water ➝ HCL + NaOH ➝ NaCL + H2O

Mention two methods that are used to measure the PH of a solution.

There are 2 methods for measuring pH: colorimetric methods using indicator
solutions or papers, and the more accurate electrochemical methods using
electrodes and a millivoltmeter (pH meter).

How are antacids working in our bodies?

Antacids help to create heartburn (indigestion). They work by neutralizing the

stomach acid that causes heartburn.

Hypothesis Criterion B
strand (i)
What are you changing in your experiment? (Independent variable) (Mention one variable)
I am changing the pH level from acidic to basic.
What are you measuring in your experiment? (Dependent variable) (Mention one variable)
In this experiment I am measuring what will happened to Vinegar and Hydrochloride acid if I
add Alkali in them.

According to your research, what do you think will happen by the end of your experiment?
(Mention one prediction)
According to my prediction / research I think that in the end of this experiment the colour of
the HCL will change into Dark blue when Alkali will be added and the colour of Vinegar will
also change into Dark blue when Alkali will be added because Both are transparent.

Criterion B
strand (ii)

Method

Explain the steps of your experiment and identify the scientific variables:

So first of all, we add HCl (dilute ) hydrochloric acid in the 1 st beaker. And in the 2nd
beaker we add Vinegar (acetic acid) then we use an indicator to see the acidity. We
noticed that the colour of the solutions in the beakers before the experiment were
transparent and after the mixing of indicator to both of the solutions the colour of HCl
changed into orange and the colour of the vinegar changed into yellow. Now we will
start our main experiment which is adding the alkali to both substances. When we
added the alkali to HCl the colour changed or in other words the pH level changed
from Orange to purple which is close to blue and when we added the alkali to
vinegar the pH level changed from yellow to Purple which is also close to blue. The
scientific variable for this experiment is pH level.

These other variables will be controlled (fixed) to ensure a fair test: (controlled variables):
(Mention two)

To ensure a fair test we will control the amount of the Alkali, Vinegar and the
Hydrochloride acid (Dilute).

What should you do during the experiment in order not to have any errors (mistakes)?
(Mention one)
we have to put an equal amount of Vinegar and Hydrochloride acid in each beaker
and then add an equal amount of Alkali in them.

Safety notes

Risk analysis for this experiment suggests the following safety precautions must be
observed: (mention two)
There are 2 things we should be careful of and they are: 1 we should never touch the
acids with bare hands and 2 is that we shouldn’t drink the acids.

Equipment

The equipment required for this experiment will be:

The equipment that will be required for this experiment are: 2 beakers, 1 bottle of
Hydrochloride acid, 1 bottle of Vinegar and 1 bottle of Alkali.

Results
Record your results in a clear and organized way – usually in a table – showing units of
measurement.
Acids pH
You may wish acid

Conclusion

What were the results of your experiment?

The result of my experiment was that the colour changed to Purple for both of the
acids: Vinegar and HCl. And this is because of the change of pH from acidic to basic.

Was your prediction correct?

Well, my prediction was kind of correct I guess because the colour that should have
occurred was supposed to be Blue but instead it was Purple because the Alkali was
very old. So yes, my prediction was correct because Purple is close to blue.

What happened when you changed the concentration of the acid?

When I change the concentration of the acid the colour of both of the solutions was changed
and pH of solutions was also changed with the reference to the colour.

Criterion C strands

Sciences for the IB MYP 2: by Concept

Evaluation

Was your experiment valid (was it as predicted in your hypothesis?)?

Yes, my experiment was valid and was just as predicted in my hypothesis.

State what errors (mistakes) were present in your results and did it affect your results?

The main mistake that was present in my experiment was the validity of the acids because
the alkali and HCl were very old and that cause the colours to change.

What should you do in your next experiment in order not to have any mistakes?

In my next Experiment I should buy brand new acids for example: new bottle of Alkali
and a new bottle of HCl. This will cause the experiment to go as planned.

what are you curious to do in your next experiment? What changes are you going to make?

In my next experiment I am planning to change the acids to something else. For Criterion C
example, to make the experiment fun I can use: Bleach and Ammonia. I want to see strand (iv)
these 2 acids explode and I want to tell people that these are 2 common house hold
Items that can cause major damage if not used properly.
