IELTS Model Answer Writing

Task 1 Oct 2018
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of women,
men and children consuming five servings of fruit
and vegetables each day in 8 years from 2001 to 2008
in the UK.

Overall, it can be seen that the highest percentage of

all people consuming fruit and vegetables was
women, while children consistently accounted for
the lowest proportion. Furthermore, a significant
increase in the proportion of people eating these
food items can be seen over the period given.

The percentage of women who ate fruit and

vegetables started at just over 20% in 2001. This
figure then rose steadily to reach a peak of almost
35% in 2006, before falling slightly to 30% in the final
year.

In terms of men and children eating fruit and

vegetables, the rate remained relatively stable in the
first three years (about 17% and 12% respectively).
From this point, the proportion of men climbed
gradually to peak at about 27% in both 2006 and
2007, after which it dropped to about 26%. A similar
growth in the figure for children was evident
reaching 25% in 2007 and around 24% in the final
year.

Tips for Analysing the Model Answer:

1. Paraphrasing does not need to be complicated.

Not all words can be changed all the time.
Choose which words you will and won’t
change. Trying to paraphrase too often will
result in too many errors and a lower score.
2. Highlight highs, lows and trends in your
overview where possible.
3. Make sure statements in your body paragraph
are supported by data.
4. Make sure paragraphs are easy to see.
5. Remember this is a report, not an essay
6. Look at the logical organisation of information
in the model answer above. It is easy to read
and not confusing. If your report is confusing
to read because you jump about with
information, it is a bad report. All reports
should be logical and clear.
7. Check the linking words used.
8. Note the variation in sentence structures.
9. Don’t overload your report with too many
small details – be selective.
10. Aim for around 170-190 words. This model
answer is 184 words in length. You do not need
to write your word count on your test paper.

I hope you found this useful. For more tips and

lessons, go to the RED BAR at the top of the website
and see the relevant section of the test.

Please note, GT candidates have a letter in task 1

and nothing else.

All the best

The bar charts demonstrate the changes of 5

portions of fruit and vegetable per day consumed by
men, women (,)and children in percentage, between
2001 and 2008 in (the) UK.

It is clear that among 3 types of people, women (have)

the highest consumption of five portions of fruit and
vegetables of the 7 years. However(,) a considerable
growth was seen of the consumption in the first 5 years
and inched downward for the rest of the years.

Between 2001 and 2006 the total percentage

consumption escalated from (an) average 16% to (a)
peak of 26% per day. Between the period of 2006 to
2008, the gap in between 3 groups has been narrowed,
as the percentage of men and children continues to
(rise).

In 7 years period of time, the difference between (the) 3

groups is mostly the same, with women having the
highest percentage and children having the lowest
percentage.

Thank you Liz, for providing above materials, I found

it was very useful.
And I want to have a overview and comments on my

This bar Graph depicts the percentage of

men, women and children consuming 5 Portions Of
Vegetables and fruits in a day from 2001 – 2008 in
UK in span of 8 years.

Overall its Clear that percentage of men, women and

children eating 5 portions has increased till 2006 but
its fallen in 2008 somehow. Consumption is
maximum by females as compared to other two
groups.

Consumption in females was just over 20% which

shown persistent increase to around 35 % in 2006
and for some reason its dropping after that to 30% in
2008. In contrast in males, consumption stagnated at
around 17 % from years 2001-2003, but after that its
increasing every year and steeped to 27% in 2006.It
Stayed there in 2007 and somehow declined to 27%
in 2008.

Similarly in children, consumption was stagnated

for first three years at around 12 % and shown a
sharp rise to almost 25% in 2006. In contrast to
males and females, it increased further in 2007 to
above 25 % , but again went low in 2008 just to
remain slightly more as it was in 2006.

Consumption of 5 portions of vegetables and fruits

is increasing in all the three groups with maximum
consumption in females. For some reasons,
consumption has fallen in 2008 following similar
trend in all groups.

The bar chart given illustrates the average

rate of women, men, and children who consumed five
different servings a day in the UK between the year of
2001 and 2008.

The percentage rate of women who consumed food,

increased respectively from 2001 to 2005. Thereafter, it
reached a peak in the year of 2006 with exceeding 30%.
Then it dropped during the next two years.

In terms of men and children consumption, in the first

three years of the trend it was stable. Then in 2004,
mens food consumption was more than 20 per-cent,
while childrens consumed less than that. However, the
mens average kept on climbing until it dropped
slightly in 2007, and at the same year children rate
peaked.

Overall, the food consumption in the UK generally

increased as it can be seen. Moreover, women eats
mostly, and childrens eats leastly.

The chart below illustrates the percentage of

individuals who consumed a quintuple chunk of fruits
and vegetables daily in an eight-year period spanning
between 2001 and 2008 in the UK.
Overall, women constituted the highest consumption
above 30 percent whiles the least was recorded by
children at 10 percent.
Firstly, the period 2006 marked the peak of
consumption among women and men whiles that of
children occurred a year after in 2007. Women
remained relatively high consumers since the period of
2001 with 20 percent with a relative increase in the
subsequent years till 2006 when it attained it highest
consumers at 30 percent but there was a slight dip a
year after and it ended the period on a marginal
decline of almost 30 %. Also, men had maintained a
relatively stable consumption percentage spanning a
period of 3 years from 2001 to 2003 at a rate a little
over 15% but attained an increased rate slightly above
20%. It continued on it marginal increase but there was
a balance consumption between 2006 and 2007 but
slight dip in 2008.
Furthermore, the consumption among children
remained balance during the first three years but
maintained an increase percentage to 2007,
consequently, the very last year had a slight decline in
consumption at almost 25%

When we look at these graphs, we can

easily see that women like eating fruit and vegetables
during the day. But men do not like eating fruit and
vegetables as much as women. And also children do
not eat vegetables and fruits as much as women and
men. There was a huge gap between men and women
in 2003 and 2004. In those years men probably could
not eat healthily. But the following year the big gap
became smaller compared to other years. From 2004 to
2008 women probably thought that they should feed
their children more healthily. We can see this on the
graph because the percentage of children is rising from
2004 to 2008. And also we can see that 2006 was a
really good year for men and women. And for
children, 2007 was a really good year. Because
percentages are high during these years. Also, we can
easily see that during the 2003-2006 percentages are
increasing linearly. But during the 2006-2008
percentages are decreasing linearly except men.

The graph illustrates ratio of three different

age groups (men, women and children) who ate five
portions of food and vegetables per day in the United
Kingdom from 2001 till 2008.
From the very beginning, the ratio of women remains
high while consumption of food and vegetables from
the comparison of other age groups. Furthermore, the
portion of eating remains at peak at the year of 2006
among women which slightly decrease in the latter
two years (2007 and 2008). The second highest age
group who ate food and vegetables in the UK were
men, as in 2001 the usage in men was approximately
18 percent which increases with the passage of time
and reaches around 27 percent from the year of 2007
and amazingly remains consistent in 2008. The last but
not least age group who ate food and vegetables were
children, who although increase the use of the fruits
and vegetables but consumption remains low.
overall, the men and children ate fruits and vegetables
less than women but with the time they prefer to eat it
more.

The bar chart illustrates the portion of

women, men and children consuming the five servings
of fruit and vegetables each day in Great Britain from
2001 until 2008.Units are measured in percent.
Overall, men have consumed more fruits and
vegetables than women and children. As it is shown in
the graph, men and women ate the highest portions of
products in 2006(around 27% and more than 35%
respectively), whereas children reached their peak in
the year 2007(approximately 26%).
Getting back to the details, women showed gradual
increase until 2006(by around 15%, from 21% to 35%),
and then it slightly decreased in two following
years(just over and under a third respectively).
On the other hand percentage of men and children
consuming fruits and vegetables remained the same
up until 2004, from then it constantly surged by
around 6%(from 21% to 27%) in the next 4 years,
however it showed insignificant decline in the last
year(27% and 25% respectively).

The chart illustrates the percentage of men,

women and children who consume five percent
portion of vegetable and fruits from 2001 to 2008 in
United Kingdom.

Overall, the chart shows a fluctuation of food

consumption from 2001 to 2006. While it has reached
to maximum in 2006 but the minimum consumption of
fruits and vegetable was in 2001. Importantly, the
percentage of women is at the highest level in the
course of each years.

Apparently, from 2001 to 2008, women have used more

fruits and vegetable than men and children while
children has been the lowest consumers. For example,
in 2004, above 30 percent of eaters were women
meanwhile children and men were 10-15 percent.
In addition, the percentage of consumers has reached
its climax in 2006 even though women kept its position
and followed by men and children, the graph descends
after 2006 whoever women recognized as a leading
consumer of all 8 years.

The bar chart clearly presents the number of

men, women and children in percentage who consume
five portions of fruits and vegetables daily in Britain
between the year 2001 to 2008.

Overall, women used to be the leading consumers of

all these years, while children were shown to be the
least vegetarians. Vegetable and fruit consumption
trend was surging up for all categories between the
year 2001 to 2006. Nevertheless, eating greens was
recorded as falling after 2006.

children’s way of eating vegetables and fruits was

about 12% for consecutive 3 years back to 2001. In
2004, the consumption drastically gone uphill to about
16% and continued to rose around 25% in 2007. Finally,
in 2008, a slight fall shown and made the figure below
25%.

Men’s trend was similarly to that of children’s but with

higher percentage. Women’s eating habit in 2006 had
been recorded as the highest consumption of
all(around 35%). Like with the trends of men and
children, women’s consumption declined the last 2
years to about 28%.
