WHAT SHOULD THE LAERNERS LEARN

Learners learn about the families of instruments and conclude the lesson by constructing a model
instrument from one of the families studied.

Learners will learn how each of the four families of instruments make or create the family specific
sound. Learners will also make a drum, and play the instruments as a group activity. I will need
instrumental charts, construction materials such as cups, papers, and tape.

Learners will need materials based on how complex they wish to make their project. If this is done in
class, than the teacher would need to make sure that the learners had the same materials. I have
allowed my learners to construct their drums as a homework assignment, which gives the learners more
flexibility in material choices for construction.

Learners will be able to write a short paragraph describing their favorite musical instrument. After
writing the paragraph, the learners should draw a representation of the instrument. The teacher should
provide individual handheld examples of instruments relative to the desired outcome. i.e. just
instruments of the Symphony Orchestra, or any instrument. Classroom charts may also be used to allow
the student movement and exploration.

The learners will be divided into small groups depend on the number of computers to which you have
access. Learners will find an instrument of their choice and print the information and picture page

Learners will be able to answer simple question such as ‘’ what material are used in making of the
instrument you have chosen? E.g. such as wood, brass, string, etc. learners will know how to compare
their instrument and write a list containing what parts are the same and what parts are different.

Learners will collect information to create bar graphs representing the most popular family of
instruments for class. For example, you might 11 guitars, 4 trumpets and 1 timpany, which will translate
into a bar graph indicating that string instrument are the most popular instrument for your class.

Most of learners don’t hear classical music in their homes, and truly don’t recognize most of the
instruments in the orchestra. They don’t recognize those used in marching band, and in popular music,
i.e. drums, guitars, keyboard. The learners explore the families of instruments in such a way as to find
instruments that the were not familiar with, even if there not orchestral instruments, because I have
had students who brought fourth instrument such as the ocarina from their exploration.
