Worn, damaged or loose parts must be replaced.

vehicle steering control may be affected.
inspect the axle beam, steering knuckles, king pins,
steering arms and tie rod arms and replace if
indications of looseness are found.
If tie rod arm or steering arm has been removed,
inspect tapers for damage.
Check king pin, bushing and knuckle wear.
Remove the thrust bearing and seal and inspect for
wear, rips and tears.
Check thrust bearing for pitting, discoloration
wear.
Check axle beam bore for wear and damage.
CROSS TUBE, ARM AND TIE ROD
END INSPECTION

On permanent/y lubed and extended lube tie rod
If ends, Rockwell does not recommend repacking
and rep/acing the boot sea/. Replace the tie rod
ends. Tie rod ends that are not lubricated may
result in worn or broken parts which may lead to
loss of steering control.
Check seals visually for any indication of damage.
also check that the seal is securely seated on the
socket. If the cross tube end has a grease fitting,
replace damaged seals. If seals are damaged or
loose and ends do not have greasing provisions,
the entire tie rod should be replaced.
If any movement or looseness is felt between the tie
rod ends and the tie rod arms, remove and replace
and the tie rod ends.
Any cross tube found to be cracked, bent, dented or
severely gouged should be replacl

With the bushing removed, measure the knuckle
bore in two positions that are 90” opposed. If the For all specifications,
average measurement is more than the specified measurements and service
dimension, repeat the procedure lower in the bore.
If the average measurement is more than the information, see Maintenance
specified dimension, replace the knuckle. See Manual Number 2, Front Non-
Figure 1.
Drive Steering Axles. ,
Measure the beam bore in four positions as shown
in Figure 2. If the average measurement is more
than the specified dimension, replace the beam.
