• ASSIGNMENT 01

• CRUSHED ROCKS AND STONES FOR BASE

COURSE.
• GROUP 12
BASE COURSE

• This is the main structural layer of the pavement. The base is the
layer which gives the pavement the most of its strength.
• Large aggregate size tends to be used whether the layer is asphalt, a
concrete or a granular material. In concrete, large aggregate size
present no problem.
MATERIAL USED F

• Material that are suitable for base course are G45, G60, G80, CRR, CRS,
DBM40.
• CRUSHED ROCKS (CRR) AND CRUSHED STONES (CRS)
• These are materials made from crushing and screening of hard stones of v
types and they can be used for base course construction provided that the
respective material standard.
• CRS
crushed stone or quarried rock compacted to a percentage of maximum dry
material at BS-Heavy compaction .
• CRR

diameter.
• All particles shall be crushed with no soil fines
• The maximum liquid limit of CRR is 30% where as its maximum linear shrinkage is 3%.
• Aggregate strength is measured in term of TFV where by the TFV soaked value shall be minimum 75% of TFV d
and TFV dry minimum value is 110 kn.

• Preparation of subbase
Crushed aggregate base course of class CRR shall on all account be placed o
course.
• Spreading and mixing
The crushed aggregate complying with the requirements specified above sha
quantities sufficient to ensure the completed layer will comply with the requ
to layer thickness, and density
CRR crushed aggregate as specified in specification shall be laid by a appro
propelled mechanical spreader and finisher capable of laying to the required
camber without causing segregation r other defects.
• Compaction
After mixing and spreading, the crushed aggregate shall be placed to the co

• It should be noted that the requirement for compaction of CRR material a
normally not achieved unless a special techniques such as slushing with w

• This type of material is therefore not prescribed unless a subbase stabilize
lime is used in order to provide a firm platform for construction of the ba
slushing to be safely carried out without softening of the subbase
