Vaporizers .
These are situated on the back bar of the anesthetic machine down stream of
the flow meter it contains the volatile liquid anesthetic agent (e.g. isoflurane ,
sevoflurane ) . Gas is passed from the flow meter through the vaporizer . The
gas picks up “vapor” from the vaporizer and deliver to the patient.
Actions occurred in vaporizer
• Vaporizer is designed to convert liquid anesthetic to vapour and add a controlled amount of
vapour to the carrier gas flowing through the machine.
• A control valve adjust the of the gas that bypasses the vapors chamber to the gas that passes
through the chamber.
• The concentration of the vapour been picked up by the gas can be increased by adjusting the
ratio.
• A bi-metallic strip is the secondary control point adjusts the gas flow through the vaporizer .
As the agent cools the by metallic strip moves allows the greater ratio of the gas to pass
through the vapour chamber entraining a greater concentration of volatile agent and
eliminating the effect of temperature.
Factors affecting vaporizer perfomance.
• Backpressure .
This phenomenon (also known as pumping
affect) that occurs when pressure from the gas
driven ventilators is transmitted in the
retrograde fashion to the back bar and
vaporizers. To avoid it should have one way
valve at the flow of the vapourizer ensuring
that the vaorizing chamber and bypass
chamber have equal volume.
• Ambient temperature.
