METHOD STATEMENT FOR PRODUCTION AND LAYING OF CEMENT

CONCRETE KERB AND KERB WITH CHANNEL

1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to define the methodology for production
and laying of cement concrete kerb and kerb with channel and to ensure proper
finishing of the same to achieve good workmanship to the satisfaction of
CCSC/IC Engineer in accordance with MORT&H specification and GFC drawing.

2. SCOPE
This work shall consist of constructing cement concrete kerb and kerb
with channel in the central median and/or along the footpaths or separators in
conformity with the lined, levels and dimensions as specified in the drawings.

3. References
1. Concession agreement and good for construction (GFC) drawings
2. Technical specification (MORT&H) section 408
3. Ordinary Portland cement -43 grade as per I.S 8112
4. Coarse and fine aggregate from material sources for concrete
–as per I.S 383
5. Method of test for aggregate for concrete –as per I.S 2386-1963
a. Particle size and shape –as per part 1
b. Estimation of deleterious materials and organic impurities as per
part 2
c. Specific gravity, density ,voids, absorption and bulking-as per part 3
d. Mechanical properties-as per part 4
e. Soundness-as per part 5
f. Measuring mortar making properties of fine aggregate as per part 6
g. Alkali-aggregate reactivity-as per part 7
h. Petrographic examination-as per part 8

6. Water: - As per MORT&H –section 1000-cluase 1010

7. Concrete admixture - MORT&H section 1000 clause 1012 and as per I.S 9103.

4. specification:-
Cement concrete kerb and kerb with channel shall be provided in cement
concrete of grade –M 20. On existing road the foundation of lean concrete of
M-10 for a width of 565mm of varying thickness is laid on the road base.

5. Type of construction:-
These shall be cast-in-situ construction with suitable kerb casting machine
in all situation except at locations where continuous casting with equipment is not
practicable. In those situations, precast concrete blocks shall be used.
6. Equipment:-

A continuous kerb casting equipment of adequate capacity and controls,

capable of laying the kerbs in required cross-sections monolithically and
producing well-compacted mass of concrete free of voids and honeycombs, shall
be used.

7. Methodology
a. Materials used:-
I. Ordinary Portland cement - 43 grade
II. Coarse aggregate-crushed stone aggregate-grading of material shall be
corresponding to the grading given in Table 1000-1 of MORT&H for 20mm
and 10/12.5mm sizes.
III. Fine aggregate-River sand-grading of material shall be corresponding to
grading given in Table 1000-2 of MORT&H for Zone II.
IV. Water-potable water
V. Admixture:BASF-Rheobuild - 4832 and chembond - KEM SUBLAST TB
101 S
VI. Curing compound –chembond- KEM CURE AID -10W.

b.Production of concrete:-

The lean concrete grade M-10 and controlled concrete grade M-20 shall
be mixed in a batching and mixing plant as per the required specifications.

c.Transporting, placing and compaction of concrete:-

The manufactured concrete shall be unloaded into concrete transit mixers.

The transit mixers shall transport the concrete to the place of work. The transit
mixers shall stand as near as practicable to its final position of unloading, so that
no contamination, segregation or loss of its constituent material take place. The
concrete shall be unloaded to the reciver / hopper of kerb casting equipment. The
concrete mix shall be compacted to final level and grade by the kerb casting
equipment.

d. Construction operation:-

I. On existing road: Before laying the foundation of lean concrete, the base
shall be leveled and slightly watered to make it damp. The lean concrete
of M-10 grade shall be laid-cast in-situ to the required width and thickness
as detailed in GFC drawing. Compaction shall be done by manually
hammering / plate Vibrator Compactor to the final level and grade by man
power. After final setting of foundation lean concrete, the ‘L’ shaped kerb
concrete of M-20 grade shall be constructed monolithically as detailed in
GFC drawing. Surfaces shall be finished to true line and level.
II. on widening portion
Before laying the M-20 grade of concrete of ‘L’ shaped kerb concrete,
the base shall be leveled and slightly watered to make it damp. The
equipment for ‘L’ shaped kerb concrete shall be placed in position to true
line and level. The concrete shall be unloaded to receiver / hopper of
equipment and kerb equipment shall start laying of ‘L’ shaped kerb
monolithically to true line and level. Surfaces shall be finished as per site
condition.

III. In the portions where footpath is provided and/or the slope of the
carriageway is towards median (as in case of super elevated portions)
there shall be sufficient gap/recess left in the kerb to facilitate drainage
openings.
IV. After laying the kerbs and just prior to hardening of the concrete, motor
saw cut grooves (either half or full depth) shall be provided at 5 mtr
intervals or as specified by CCSC/I.C The slope of the channel / ‘L’ bed of
kerb towards drainage pipes shall be ensured for efficient drainage of the
road surface.
V. Curing:- Immediately after laying the exposed surface of kerb shall be
cured by the application of curing compound. The rate of spray shall be in
accordance with the manufacturer’s instruction. The exposed surface of
kerb shall be covered by moist hessian and the same shall be kept damp
for a minimum period of 14 days after which the hessian may be removed.
The hessian shall be kept continuously moist.

VI. Vertical and horizontal tolerances with respect to true line and level shall
be +- 6mm.

SAFETY HEALTH ENVIRONMENT:

 All employees working within the limit of this project shall follow the
guidelines/rules &regulations as mentioned in safety ,health ,
environmental plan.
 Caution Boards shall be placed at the beginning and end of working site
and also at risky locations.

 Barricading tape will be placed through out construction area.

 Signal man will be placed at heavy traffic locations at the time of

execution.

 Reflective sign boards will be placed during night near risky locations.
 All necessary measures shall be taken to maintain all machinery and
silencing equipments in good condition so as to maintain air and noise
emission during the operation.

 All necessary measures shall be taken to control the disposal of all forms
waste generated by the construction operations and in all associated
activities.

 All necessary measures and precautions shall be taken to avoid any

nuisance or disturbance arising from the execution of the work.
