MS – 4: Embankment and subgrade in Road works 1

METHOD STATEMENT FOR EMBANKMENT
1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to describe the procedure during construction to be adopted for the
execution of earthwork in embankment with dredged sand to extend the procedure for “on ward
operation”.

SCOPE
This work inclusive of transportation, filling, grading and compaction of dredged sand in accordance with
the requirements of the specification to the lines & grades as shown in the drawings or as instructed by the
engineer.

2. MATERIAL

2.1 DREDGED SAND:

The material to be used in embankment as core shall be dredged sand available from
approved source. The dredged sand shall meet the requirements of Technical specifications
and other related drawings. The material shall not contain any vegetation, organic, clayey or
other material and shall be obtained from approved source.

REFERENCE

I. Specification for IRC-36-2010 (Recommended practice for construction of earth embankment for
road works).
II. IS:10379-1982
III. IS: 2720 (Part-28 and 29)
IV. MORTH Rev 5
V. Technical Specification (Vol. 2)
VI. Approved drawings for construction.

MS – 4: Embankment and subgrade in Road works 2

3. PROCEDURE

3.1 TRANSPORTAION AND HANDLING:

Transportation of dredged sand from approved source shall be carried in covered Dumper / Tipper.
Necessary measures shall be ensure to avoid en route loss of moisture, spillage and dusting from the
Tippers. Transportation of dredged sand shall generally be carried out in a way that same shall be spread
and compact as per the method stated below.

3.2 SPREADING AND COMPACTION:

After checking and finding suitability of embankment material, dumping of dredged sand which conforms to
the requirement for embankment in technical specification. This sand is transported through dumper and
laid and spreaded with dozer. Prior to commencement of compaction, moisture content of the fill material
shall be checked and if required, then same shall be brought to within (+) or (-) 2% of the OMC. The layer
shall then be not more than loose thickness of 200 mm (having minimum density 1.6 T/Cum ref. Cl no
2.1.21 of technical specification) by 8 ton static roller or if required by 10 ton vibratory roller. One test will
be done per 500 sqm / layer. The layers shall be compacted to degree of compaction not less than 90% of
MDD (Ref Cl 4.5.2.3 Vol-2/ Technical Specification). Successive layers of filling shall not be placed until the
layer under construction has been thoroughly compacted to satisfy the requirements laid down in
specification. After compaction of each layer, level will be taken and recorded. This process is to be
repeated upto the bottom level of subgrade. Approved soil cover on both side slopes of embankment to
prevent erosion having specification ( minimum MDD 1.52 gm/cc and PI 5% to 9%) laid in 300mm
thickness.

4.DEPLOYMENT OF PLANT

Following Plants and Equipments shall be deployed for embankment work;

(1) Dozing Equipment (D6) – 2.3 cum bucket- As per requirement

(2) Excavator – 1.2 Cum bucket capacity – As per requirement
(3) Tipper – 9/14/25 Ton – As per requirement
(4) Static Roller – 8 Ton – As per requirement
(5) Vibratory Roller – 10 Ton – As per requirement
(6) Water Tanker with sprinkler arrangement- 5000/9000 litre – As per requirement
(7) Field density test apparatus (Sand pouring cylinder or core cutting mould)- 115/125 dia
cylinder or 100 dia core cutting mould – As per requirement

MS – 4: Embankment and subgrade in Road works 3

5.GENERAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

All personnel shall follow Health and Safety document as would be issued by ITD-CEMENTATION from
time to time. Necessary care shall be taken to prevent entry of unauthorised persons in the working area.
All persons shall use appropriate personal protective equipments as required.

6.QUALITY CONTROL

All Quality control aspects will be maintained as per related Specifications and recorded in attached
formats.

METHOD STATEMENT FOR SUBGRADE

1. PURPOSE

The purpose of this document is to describe the procedure during construction to be adopted for the
execution of subgrade construction.

2. SCOPE
This work inclusive of excavation, removal & satisfactory disposal of all materials necessary for the
construction of the roadway & side drains in accordance with the requirements of the specification to the
lines & grades as shown in the drawings or as instructed by the engineer, is covering the activities of
subgrade construction , and removal & disposal of unsuitable cut materials.
3. MATERIAL

The material to be used in subgrade shall be moorrum meeting the requirements of Cl no

2.1.21 of Vol-2 / Technical specification (minimum CBR 8% and density 1.75 T/Cum), MORTH
specifications and drawing. The materials shall be free from boulders, lumps, tree roots, rubbish
or any other deleterious materials likely to deteriorate or affect the stability of subgrade.
Materials are to be obtained from approved borrow areas. As per MORTH 5th revision cl no
305.2.1.1 material having LL>50% and PI>25% will not be used.

MS – 4: Embankment and subgrade in Road works 4

4. REFERENCE
I. IS:10379-1982
II. IS: 2720 (Part-28 and 29)
III. MORTH Rev 5
IV. Technical Specification (Vol. 2)
V. Approved drawings for construction.

5. PROCEDURE

After the embankment operation is over up to the bottom of subgrade the cross section level will be taken &
recorded at an interval of 1.0 m on the ground, having an interval of 10 m in straight portion and 5 m in
curve. The filling work of subgrade will start by dumping moorum on the compacted base at uppermost
layer of the embankment and spread by using dozer as per site requirement. The moorum will then be
compacted by 8 ton static roller or if required by 10 ton vibratory roller. The layers will be compacted to the
required degree of compaction. One test per 500 Sqm will be done. The total depth of subgrade will be as
per drawing and the compacted thickness of each layer shall not exceed 200 mm. After compaction of
layers the method of taking levels to be followed as mentioned earlier.

A proper control on moisture content should be maintained during compaction. The speed of the roller
should not be more than 5 Km/hr at the time of rolling & care to be taken while overlapping of drum. After
compaction for each layer of sub grade the field dry density should not be less than 97% of maximum dry
density (Ref table 300-2 of MORTH 5th rev) obtained at laboratory.
Pavement design as given in DBR has been prepared based on the design traffic 20MSA and minimum
effective CBR of subgrade is found more than 8% as given in technical specification, then accordingly
thickness of bitumen will be fixed.

6. DEPLOYMENT OF PLANT

Following Plants and Equipments shall be deployed for proper execution of work;
(1) Dozing Equipment (D6) – 2.3 cum bucket- As per requirement
(2) Excavator – 1.2 Cum bucket capacity – As per requirement
(3) Tipper – 9/14/25 Ton – As per requirement
(4) Static Roller – 8 Ton – As per requirement
(5) Vibratory Roller – 10 Ton – As per requirement
(6) Water Tanker with sprinkler arrangement- 5000/9000 litre – As per requirement
(7) Field density test apparatus (Sand pouring cylinder or core cutting mould)- 115/125 dia
cylinder or 100 dia core cutting mould – As per requirement

All personnel shall follow Health and Safety document as would be issued by ITD-CEMENTATION from
time to time. Necessary care shall be taken to prevent entry of unauthorised persons in the working area.

All persons shall use appropriate personal protective equipments as required.
