FILIPINO CULTURE AND VALUES
− It is the totality of cultures within the Philippine Islands. It should not be urban-centered nor rural-centered,
but national-focused. It is family- or community-centered.
− It is an acculturation of various foreign influences which are indigenized; Malayo-Polynesian, Chinese, Arabs,
Spanish, American, and Japanese.
• TRADITIONS
− One of the traditions that mostly influence
the Filipinos
are display of artistry in terms of the way
of Filipino
dance, the rituals, and ceremonies. This
greatly shown
in our love for festival celebrations.
− The grandest and most colorful festival in the
country
is Sinulog festival. It is one of the most
awaited and
popular annually celebrations on Cebu
Island. Most
spectators on this event come from all over and from
outside the country. It is a colorful, vibrant, cacophonic
but heart-beating and exciting celebration.
− This religious and historical festival is celebrated in
Cebu City on the third Sunday in January. The festival
marks Magellan's arrival to Cebu and the introduction of Christianity. When Magellan arrived, he planted
a cross on the island, presented the local chieftain his wife with a small statue of the child Jesus and a
priest on the expedition baptized hundreds of local villagers. This child Jesus is called now as "Santo
Nino," the patron saint of Cebu.
− The movement, though not literally like a water current in a river, is a forward-and backward movement.
Sinulog dance consists of two steps forward and one step backward accompanied by the beating of
drums. It is usually a free interpretation dance but must have those basic steps to be called a Sinulog
dance step.
− Sinulog today has grown which has its own roots in the Philippine popular piety in devotion to Santo Nino
(Child Jesus). Since 1980, the government of Cebu City organized the Sinulog Festival and provides
rewards for those who can perform more meaningful expression of the devotion through tribal dances,
which are usually done by groups.
• FAITH AND RELIGION
− Spirituality is deeply ingrained in Filipinos. A form
of
animism was already being practiced in many
pre-colonial
societies and Islam has been firmly established
in the
southern islands even before the Spanish
brought
Catholicism to the country. These days, religion
still plays a
big part in society and in the everyday lives of
Filipinos.
− The Catholic Church's views still affect the passing of some
laws, most towns still hold fiestas to honor their patron
saints, and many regular non-working national holidays are
dedicated to celebrating various religious activities and
events. To many Filipinos, religion helps shape their values and principles.
• CUSTOMS AND BELIEFS
− Filipino beliefs are all originated from their ancestors and for some of those beliefs do not make sense,
but some still follows it religiously.
Here are some Philippine beliefs that are being believed by many:
1. Naglilihi. When a pregnant woman is fond of something, may it be food or ap person, it will reflect
on the appearance of the baby.
2. Paglilibing. Prevent tears from dropping onto the glass of the coffin for the dead to leave peacefully.
3. Pusang Itim. It is believed that seeing or passing by a black cat is bad luck.
