GRE Quantitative – Equation Solving

Equation solving
• Isolate the variable by performing the same operation to both sides of the equation

Examples:
x + 7 = 11 What you do to one side
−7 − 7 Å Subtract 7 from both sides of the equation, you must
x=4 do to the other side

x − 3 = 12
+3 + 3 Å Add 3 to both sides
x = 15

5 x = 30
5 5 Å Divide both sides by 5
x=6

3 x + 7 = 19
−7 − 7 Å Subtract 7 from both sides
3 x = 12
3 3 Å Divide both sides by 3
x=4

2 x + 6 = 7 x − 24
−2 x − 2x Å Subtract 2x from both sides
6 = 5 x − 24
+24 + 24 Å Add 24 to both sides
30 = 5x
5 5 Å Divide both sides by 5
6= x

3 ( 2 x − 1) + 4 x − 11 = 8
6 x − 3 + 4 x − 11 = 8Å Expand
To check your answers,
10 x − 14 = 8 Å Simplify
+14 + 14 Å Add 14 to both sides plug in the value for x
10 x 22 into the equation
=
10 10 Å Divide both sides by 10
x = 2.2
