The FTSE MIB Index fell 1.4% to trade at the 26,810 level on Friday, in line with global equity markets
amid fears of tightening monetary policy by the Federal Reserve. Consumer inflation for the United States
came at a higher-than-expected 7.5% for January, leading St. Louis Fed President James Bullard to
comment he is dramatically more hawkish, calling for 100bps in interest rate hikes by the Fed’s July
meeting. On the corporate front, financial shares were among the biggest underperformers, led by Banca
Mediolanum (-4.1%) after the communication of its quarterly results. At the same time, Banco BPM shares
were halted for trading before the market open amid renewed speculation that UniCredit (-1.2%) would
launch a takeover bid on the bank. Investors speculate UniCredit could announce a bid over the weekend.
