Work

These days having a job is an important part of the adults’ and also the students’ life. In my age group we
can work in the summer, as a waiter in restaurants or as a shop assistant in different kinds of shops. We
can work as a gardener or a kitchen hand too. Beside these we can look after children, be a babysitter or
deliver newspapers. We can work on a construction site and for companies too.

If you take a summer job, you can earn some money and learn the value of it. You can learn new skills,
and get lots of experiences. You become more responsible, reliable, disciplined and independent. You can
make new friends and you have the chance to have fun.

On the other hand, working in the summer has some disadvantages. For example, you can’t have enough
rest in the summer holidays. The other thing is that students are usually very badly paid and they are often
not treated properly.

I have already had some summer jobs. I worked on the beach of Lake Velence last summer. I haven’t
spent my salary yet, because I’m saving money for a driving license.

I don’t know exactly what I want to do in the future, but I’m sure I would like to go on university. I have
already taken the intermediate language exam in English, but my next goal is to take the advanced level. I
love foreign languages so I would like to learn them as perfectly as I can.

There are some jobs that are traditionally made by women or men. Male jobs are typically police officer,
soldier, firefighters, mechanic, bricklayer, plumber, politician. Female jobs are nurse, housekeeper,
seamstress, nanny. Housework like cleaning, ironing, doing the washing-up, cooking, washing are
traditionally made by women too. Women can stay at home with their children for three years, which
means that they are on a maternity leave and don’t have to go to work. In modern times, a lot of women
already do jobs that are traditionally for men, because they also want a career and more and more women
works in the management for example.

To choose a job, you have to find out what qualification is necessary and whether the knowledge of a
foreign language is required or not. You have to find a job where you can work in the best working hours
for you. For example, flexible, in shifts or in night shifts. It’s important to know about the salary before
you choose a job.

Today, in Hungary the most popular jobs are lawyer, engineer, information technologist, economist, jobs
in tourism and jobs in banking.

There are two types of working people: blue-collar (they do physical jobs) and white-collar workers (they
work with their brains).
