Existentialism is concerned with the subjective or personal aspects of existence

The early 19th century philosopher Soren Kierkegaard is regarded as the father of
existentialism.

He maintained that the individual is solely responsible for giving his or her own life meaning and
for living that life passionately and sincerely, despite many existential obstacles and distractions
including despair, angst, absurdity, alienation, and boredom.

2ND SLIDE
THE PHILOSOPHY & THE LEARNERS
It is the responsibility of education that it should awaken the existential awareness of learners as
a single subjectivity present in the world.

Learners should be awakened to the full intensity of their own selfhood. They should realize that
they have to choose their own way, for choosing, they have full freedom and they are fully
responsible for making their own destiny.

3rd SLIDE
Existentialists stress that every technique, every tool, every gesture is a way that opens upon the
world.

Reality has as many aspects as there are ways of manipulating it. They say that teacher should
present the subject matter with all the possible views on it. He should read widely and set the
subject matter before the class adequately, and genuine discussions should make learners
familiar with his own thinking and then ask learners to evaluate his view against their own
experience and knowledge. At this stage, learners should be completely free to set their view on
the matter.

In the present year, teachers are already more equipped with different techniques to make
learning meaningful. One is existential way of teaching like peer initiated and peer-directed
learning which is well manifested in school. Another one is already given above.

4th SLIDE

The role of the teachers in the learning process is to be a questioner, poser of alternatives,
identifier of choices who challenges the learner to become fully existent. Teachers should assist
and guide them in the process of becoming intelligent, sensitive, choosing, and acting individual
who knows the obligation and responsibility of freedom. Teachers should help the individual
identify and know himself better. Teachers should help learners define their own essence by
exposing them to various paths they take in life. Teachers should create an environment in which
learners freely choose their own preferred way. Teachers should relate with each learner openly
and honestly.

As a MAPEH teacher, in ART subject, existentialism is applied when we encourage individual

creativity and imagination more than copying and imitating established models. Creativity is an
expression of oneself. MUSIC is also a subject that is existential by nature. When actively
listening to music, the learner is encouraged to respond individually and creatively to feel the
music.

Existential education should train the learner in becoming capable to personify knowledge and
enhance the involvement of the student. Existentialist methods are focused on the individual.
Learning is self-paced, self-directed and includes a great deal of individual contact with the
teacher, who relates to each learner openly and honestly.

In the method of teaching, there should be private and open spaces in the classroom to facilitate
dialogues, a small group discussion, and individualization to lessen the tension, formality, and
constraint experienced by the learners. Criticism to any individual work should be given less
importance. In teaching, focus is on the individual.
