PHRASAL VERBS 1

Key
1. Reading

The aim of this exercise is to point out that phrasal verbs can be said or written in a different way, usually as a
Latinate one-word equivalent (remove = take off, extinguish = put out) or as a phrase (unexpectedly found = came
across). Learners of English tend to prefer the non-phrasal verb equivalent. However, as the dialogues show, they
often sound formal like in Conversation A.

2. Practice

Students first complete the questions individually. Go through the answers. The second part of the activity can
be adapted for all learning environments. In a one-to-one or Skype-based lesson, simply ask your student the
questions.
1. cheers you up
2. get on
3. come across
4. take off
5. put out

3. More phrasal verbs

1. c 2. h 3. b 4. f 5. j 6. i 7. a 8. g 9. d 10. e

4. Find someone who ...

In a large class, have the students complete the questions individually or in pairs. Go through the answers and
then hand out page 4. Have the students stand up and ask each other the questions. Tell them that they cannot
have the same name written down more than twice during this activity. Do some feedback on the exercise, asking
what the students discovered about each other.
1. put off
2. do without
3. turn up
4. drop by
5. call off
6. work out
7. eat out

5. Homework

This exercise can either be set for homework or done at the beginning of the next class if you have the means to
play the video. Students review phrasal verbs they learned in the lesson by watching the video clips and matching
them to the sentences. The video can be played online via the link or printed QR code. The file is also available
to download if requested.
1. A woman is taking off her shoes.

4 Useful questions

Complete the dialogue with the questions below.

Am I allowed to use them all at once? Can I leave 30 minutes earlier?

Does this company allow telecommuting? How long are we allowed for lunch?
Is there a strict policy on working hours? What is the dress code here?
Will they expire?
Mark: So, Judith, do you have any questions?
1
Judith: Yes.
Mark: Generally, we work 8 hours every day. You can report to work anytime between 8 and 11
am. But not later than 11 as we close the office at 7 pm.
2
Judith: Okay.
Mark: You get one hour for lunch. If you want to take a longer break, you can, but the extra time
will be treated as unpaid time, so you’ll have to stay longer at work.
3
Judith: And what if I only take a 30-minute lunch.
Mark: Yes, you can.
Judith: What about coffee breaks?
Mark: You’re allowed to take a coffee break whenever you feel tired or need to clear your head.
In fact, we encourage it.
4
Judith: OK, fine.
Mark: We don’t really have a strict dress code. So, don’t worry, you don’t have to wear heels and
you don’t need to wear a skirt. But obviously, you shouldn’t dress inappropriately.
Judith: All right. What about holidays?
Mark: You’re entitled to 28 days paid annual leave.
5
Judith:
Mark: Yes, you can use them however you want. You can take a 28-day holiday or several shorter
breaks. But you should always give us advance notice if you’re going to take a break. For
a longer break, I mean 2 weeks or more, you should give us at least one month’s notice.
6
Judith: OK. And what if I don’t use my leave days in the same year?
Mark: You must take at least three weeks’ holiday a year. Only holiday on top of this may be
carried over to the next year.
7
Judith: OK, thanks. I think that’s everything ... oh,
Mark: Telecommuting ... you mean working from home?
Judith: Yes, that’s right.
Mark: At the beginning we’d prefer that you work at the office, unless there’s some emergency
and you have to work from home. After a few months, when you’ve settled in, we can talk
about it. We try to be flexible with our employees.

COMPANY POLICIES

Transcripts

3. Company policies

Mark: So, Judith, do you have any questions?

Judith: Yes, is there a strict policy on working hours?

Mark: Generally, we work 8 hours every day. You can report to work anytime between 8 and 11
am. But not later than 11 as we close the office at 7 pm.

Judith: Okay. How long are we allowed for lunch?

Mark: You get one hour for lunch. If you want to take a longer break, you can, but the extra time
will be treated as unpaid time, so you’ll have to stay longer at work.

Judith: And what if I only take a 30-minute lunch. Can I leave 30 minutes earlier?

Mark: Yes, you can.

Judith: What about coffee breaks?

Mark: You’re allowed to take a coffee break whenever you feel tired or need to clear your head.
In fact, we encourage it.

Judith: OK, fine. What is the dress code here?

Mark: We don’t really have a strict dress code. So, don’t worry, you don’t have to wear heels and
you don’t need to wear a skirt. But obviously, you shouldn’t dress inappropriately.

Judith: All right. What about holidays?

Mark: You’re entitled to 28 days paid annual leave.

Judith: Am I allowed to use them all at once?

Mark: Yes, you can use them however you want. You can take a 28-day holiday or several shorter
breaks. But you should always give us advance notice if you’re going to take a break. For
a longer break, I mean 2 weeks or more, you should give us at least one month’s notice.

Judith: OK. And what if I don’t use my leave days in the same year? Will they expire?

Mark: You must take at least three weeks’ holiday a year. Only holiday on top of this may be
carried over to the next year.

Judith: OK, thanks. I think that’s everything ... oh, does this company allow telecommuting?

Mark: Telecommuting ... you mean working from home?

Judith: Yes, that’s right.

Mark: At the beginning we’d prefer that you work at the office, unless there’s some emergency
and you have to work from home. After a few months, when you’ve settled in, we can talk
about it. We try to be flexible with our employees.

famous)

Important points
• Unlike many other languages, we do not use a reflexive pronoun after verbs which describe things
people usually do for themselves, such as wash, shave, dress: George shaves every morning.
We only use reflexives with these verbs for emphasis: Sam is old enough to dress himself.
• We use personal pronouns, not reflexives, after prepositions of place: Who is that behind you
(yourself)?
