About the designer

A HANDMADE
PILLOWCASE IS A
PERFECT GIFT AND
MAKES THE COZY TIME
EVEN MORE COZIER.

MAIRA OPITZ
Sewing Pattern Designer

Five years ago, during my exchange year in Finland I started to sew

the first clothes for me. I learned how to sew from my mother, who
again learned it from her mother who was a custom tailor. After
working one year in a fabric shop, I decided to move to Stuttgart
(Germany) and study to become a fashion designer and custom
tailor. After my studies love drag me again into northern Europe,
this time to Sweden.

N E AT E N T H E E D G E S BUTTONHOLES

13 cm to the center of
the buttonhole

1
The size of the buttonholes depends
ZicZac overlock stitch overlock
on the buttons you use.
Caliber button + 2 to 3 mm (0,1”)
= Length of the buttonhole. Some
sewing machines can translate the
size of buttons to the length of the
buttonhole automatically.

FYI

1 Neaten all the other the edges to stop the

fabric from fraying. You can neaten them
with an overlock machine or an overlock or zig-
zag stitch with your normal sewing machine.
Some sewing machines have the option of
using an overlock foot.

10,5 cm to the center of

the buttonhole

1 Now it´s time to sew the buttonholes in the

2. piece. Sew the buttonholes to the center
button tab. The size of the buttonholes
depends on the buttons you use.
If you are unsure of how to sew buttonholes, I
recommend you have a look in the
instructions of your sewing machine.
Carefully cut the buttonholes open with a
sharp scissor or a seam ripper.

Always sew a test buttonhole, using the same amount

of layers.

Make sure that you sew though all layers to
