Experiment Name: Bent Lever

Objectives To verify second principle of equilibrium using bent lever apparatus.

Equipment/ Bent lever, weights, Hangers, level, scale.
Apparatus
Description
Theoretical Moment of a force is its product with the perpendicular distance from the
Background axis of rotation and its tendency is to rotate the body around the axis. The
moment can be clockwise or anti-clockwise and so is the rotation. The
principle of moment states that when a system is in equilibrium, the sum of
all the clockwise moments is equal to the sum of all the anti-clockwise
moments or that the algebraic sum of all the clockwise and anti-clockwise
moments is zero
Procedure 1. Before hanging the loads on the horizontal arm of the lever,
adjust the position of the vertical arm coincides with the knife
edge fixed on the base.
2. Note the original reading on the spring balance as S1.
3. Hang loads W1, W2, on the horizontal arm. This will cause anti
clockwise moment and push the vertical arm back to the
stopper.
4. With the help of spring balance bring back the vertical arm to
the knife edge.
5. The tension thus applied has a clockwise moment which is
equal to the anticlockwise moment.
6. Take the final reading of the spring balance S2 .
7. Then S = S2-S1
