towards an intersection 400 feet away. At the same time, a truck
is traveling south at 30 mph (44 ft/sec) towards the same
intersection 250 feet away, at what rate are the cars approaching
each other?

Example 2) A man 6 feet tall walks away from a 15 foot lamp post at 5 ft/sec.

a) How fast is his shadow lengthening?

24) A trough is 12 feet long and 3 feet across the top. Its ends are
isosceles triangles with altitudes of 3 ft.
a) If water is being pumped into the trough at 2 cubic feet per minute,
how fast is the water level rising when the depth h is 1 foot?

b) If the water is rising at a rate of inches/min when h = 2,

determine the rate at which water is being pumped into the trough.

28a) A boat is pulled into a dock by means of a winch 12 feet above
the deck of the boat. The winch pulls in rope at a rate of 4 ft/sec.
Determine the speed of the boat when there is 13 feet of rope out.
What happens to the speed of the boat as it gets closer to the dock?
