An activist is a person who campaigns for political or social change.

A human rights defender or human right activist is a person who individually, or with others,
acts to promote or protect human rights. They can be journalists, whistle blowers, lawyers, etc.

The major activities of human rights activists include promoting and safe guarding their own
rights and those of all individuals.

Some of Nigeria’s prominent human rights activists are Ken Saro-Wiwa, Margaret Ekpo, Chnua
Achebe, Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, Gani Fawehinmi, Festus Keyamo, Dr. Josephine Odumakin,
etc.

Human rights activists around the world include Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Martin
Luther King Jnr., Mahatma Gandhi, Malala, etc.
