Unthinkable

This movie is about a dirty interrogator who was considered the best interrogator in the
world. This interrogator was known because he knows how to tick off all kinds of people, he was
great at breaking minds of people by inflicting fear and pain. He was basically great at torturing
people until they spill information.

The terrorist being interrogated was a former soldier who was knowledgeable about
nuclear bombs. He placed three bombs all over the country and was timed to explode in six
days if his demands weren’t met by the government.

The interrogator sliced-off all of Younger’s (terrorist) fingertips. He electrocuted him, he

took out his teeth and performed a lot of brutal torturing techniques to make Younger tell them
where the bombs were.

There was a woman who was part of the military, she was also a lawyer and was tasked
to help in extorting the information out of Younger. This woman was against the ways of the
interrogator and she would always play the caring and thoughtful cop. She would try to talk to
Younger to just give them proof that there are really bombs by giving one location. Younger
gave a location and when the police got there, the bomb exploded and it was really set-up to
fool them.

In the end, the higher authorities believed that the ways of the interrogator was the only
chance they could take because of the exigent circumstance. The interrogator killed the wife of
the terrorist in front of him and threatened that he will hurt the children if he still doesn’t spill the
information. Younger broke and told them the three locations. The interrogator does not stop yet
and drags the children in the interrogation room because he believes there was a fourth bomb.
The woman stopped the interrogator and the interrogator stopped. There was a fourth bomb
and it exploded, possibly killing and injuring numerous people around the area.
The movie was very dark and portrayed a sadist character out of Samuel Jackson. It
was very morbid because of how inhumane his ways of torturing were. He seemed to have
desensitized himself from the violence since it was seen that it was nothing personal to him and
he was so used to it that he was very calm in doing it, he was very composed and he knew
everything he was doing. He was an expert in inflicting fear which he thinks is necessary when
lives of thousands are on the line.

I personally believe that somehow Samuel Jackson’s ways in the movie were necessary.
I understand it was a violation of human rights and a lot of other laws and treaties, but
sometimes people have to weigh the situation in a more practical way. There was a scene
where the woman said “what you’re doing is against the Constitution!” Then, Samuel Jackson
replied with “There will be no Constitution to follow if those bombs explode.” I don’t suggest that
everyone should think how he should think but I believe everyone should have the intuition and
the sense of propriety to consider things like that when so much is on the line. It is very stupid
for me how the terrorist can raise a family then risk his family’s lives later on. His wife would
have been alive if he cooperated. When push comes to shove, what else can people do. The
people just also want to continue living, it’s just that that is the only option they have to save
themselves. The demand of Younger was for the President to announce that it will cut political
and military ties with the Islamic states. The government did not want to risk it’s well-built
relationships with those Islamic countries and decided not to comply with Younger’s demands.
This I believe is also very irrational. Younger only wanted an announcement but it didn’t mean
that they really had to follow. It was a terrorist’s demand. They would have understood.
