Dear English Learner,

Get ready to speak confidently with these English verbs for daily life. I recommend reading these
sample sentences out loud and using the blank space on the last page to answer my challenge

Appliances and Utensils


1. To blend: I use the blender to blend frozen fruit and milk for a smoothie.

2. To grind: Dan uses his coffee grinder to grind the beans to make coffee.

3. To toast: I toast a piece of toast in the toaster.

4. To peel: I use the peeler to peel the skin off the potatoes.

5. To grate: I use the grater to grate some cheese on my toast.

6. To strain: I use the strainer to strain the water from the pasta.

7. To open: I use the can opener to open the can of peaches.

8. To mix: I use the mixer to mix the ingredients for pancakes.

9. To whisk: I use the whisk to whisk the frosting for the cake.

10. To baste: I use the baster to baste the turkey to keep it moist.

11. To freeze: We use the freezer to freeze food so that it will last longer.

12. To grill: We use the grill when we want to grill steaks or burgers for a cookout.

Cooking

13. To chop: I chop tomatoes for the sauce.

14. To slice: I slice the bread for toast.

15. To taste: I taste the sauce before I add more spices.

16. To bake: I turn on the oven when I want to bake cookies.

17. To boil: I use the kettle to boil water for tea.

18. To simmer: I let the sauce simmer over low heat.

19. To nuke/ To heat up: I use the microwave to nuke/to heat up leftovers.

20. To roast: I use the oven to roast the chicken.

21. To fry: I like to fry bacon and eggs for breakfast.

VS To saute: I saute some vegetables for dinner.

22. To brown: I brown the meat before I add the spaghetti sauce.

23. To steam: I steamed the vegetables for dinner.

24. To pour: I pour the sauce onto the spaghetti.

25. To spread: I spread butter on the bread.

26. To sprinkle: My son likes to sprinkle cheese on his spaghetti.

27. To add: I like to add salt and pepper to my food.

Doing the Dishes

28. To clear: After dinner, we have to clear the table of all the dishes.

29. To pile up: We pile up the dirty dishes in the sink.

30. To scrape: Dan scrapes the leftover food into the bowl to give to our chickens.

31. To soak: For some dishes, it’s best to soak them in hot, soapy water to get the food off.

32. To scrub: I use a sponge to scrub the dishes clean.

33. To load/unload: My son likes to help load and unload the dishwasher.

34. To sterilize: The dishwasher sterilizes the dishes by using really hot water and steam.

35. To the dishes (by hand): If something can’t go in the dishwasher or if it’s full, Dan and I

will do the dishes, or wash them by hand.

36. To squirt: I squirt some soap onto the sponge.

37. To dry (air dry): Dan puts the dishes on the rack to dry.

38. To stack: We stack the plates on the shelf.

39. To sort: We sort the silverware in the drawer.

40. To hang up: We hang up the towel when we are done.

Cleaning the Kitchen

41. To clean as you go/ To clean up: My mom always told me that it’s always best if you

clean as you go, meaning that as you cook or make a meal, you immediately clean up

after you finish doing something.

42. To tidy: I like to tidy my pantry so that I can easily find what I need next time I use it.

43. To put away: I put away the leftovers so that we can eat them later.

44. To squeeze: I squeeze the water out of the sponge so that it doesn’t drip.

45. To wipe down: I wipe down the counters and appliances.

46. To sweep up: I use the broom to sweep the crumbs up off the floor.

47. To mop: I mop the floor.

48. To dump: I dump the trash into the trash can.

49. To take out: Dan takes out the trash.

50. To pump: The last thing I’ll do now is pump some soap to wash my hands–then I’m

done!

Use the space below to write a few sentences answering this question: What is your favorite
meal to cook? Explain it in English!

Sample answer: I like to make fish tacos because they’re tasty, but also pretty simple. I have to
chop the fish into long strips. Then I fry it in the pan with some seasonings. I heat up some
tortillas and slice some cabbage. I mix together some mayo, lime juice, and seasonings for a
sauce. I try to clean as I go, but sometimes I’m too busy. After dinner, my husband does the
dishes, loads the dishwasher, and wipes down the counters.
