UNDERSTANDING CULTURE, SOCIETY, AND POLITICS ACTIVITY SHEET

Explaining the Importance of Cultural Relativism
in Attaining Cultural Understanding

I. Learning Competency
1. Explain the importance of cultural relativism in attaining cultural
understanding.

II. Background Information for Learners

Culture is a vital part of our life and of the society itself. It influences the
values, beliefs, and traditions of the people. Through culture, people develop a
sense of belongingness, personal growth, and the capacity to interact and
associate with others.

Cultural relativism is a perspective which suggests that culture may vary from
one another but all are equally valid and no one system is deemed better than
another. This is based on the idea that there is no standard of good or evil, so
every judgment about right and wrong is a product of society.

The activities found herein will be instrumental in assisting learners like you in
understanding and explaining the concept of cultural relativism and because of
this, you will be able to attain cultural understanding.

Remember

Knowing the importance of cultural relativism will lead the students and
researchers to understand that culture must be interpreted in the context of their
locality.
The world is composed of lots of different cultures. The difference between
these cultures created certain links that brought each closer to one another. The
uniqueness of one culture as compared to another helps determine the type of
interaction made between two or more unrelated cultures.
The variation in human condition promotes diversity and plurality in cultural
tradition. This could lead to discrimination and ostracism. Normally, it is to be
expected that a certain type of practice is culturally acceptable in one group
while being considered a cultural deviation in your group.
Cultural relativism is a concept of understanding how different cultures
respond to their own belief. It promotes that culture must be understood in the
context of their locality. The concept of cultural relativism was first formulated by
William Graham Summer in his book “Folkways.”
Ethnocentrism is a perspective that promotes an individual’s culture as the
most efficient and superior hence the individual who exhibits ethnocentrism
feels that his or her culture is the most appropriate as compared to other
cultures.
Cultural relativism is a positive attitude or concept. It shows a sense of
understanding for different cultures and it treats the uniqueness of these
cultures with utmost respect. It leads to the view that no one cultural system is
superior.
