Abstract type1

This paper summarizes the aerodynamic study on the design of a diffuser created for a formula
student vehicle. Its is an engineering design competition in which students from colleges and
universities all over the country compete with a formula-style vehicle in areas of engineering design,
overall cost, marketability and dynamic performance. For this competition the car engineered has to
be designed with all the systems working in optimal condition. Here we have selected the study for
the aerodynamic device at the aft part of the body called Diffuser.
To design a diffuser first the area of the underbody is selected with a range of different outlet angles.
The models of different diffuser angles are selected with the help of Ahmed body of our particular
vehicle whose dimensions are(length = 2794.6 mm, width = 623 mm, height = 768.56). The diffuser
is of length 831 mm specific to our vehicle model. Primary focus includes the ride height and the
diffuser angle suited for this vehicle model to optimize the aerodynamic performance of the diffuser.
Ansys fluent was used to simulate various models for their contours and pressure plots for total
pressure, static pressure and pressure coefficients. The study was done in following steps-
❖ first the range of optimal angle of diffuser was analyzed by running simulations on the ahmed
body with reference to ride height of our vehicle,
❖ the vehicle model was created with different angles of diffuser within the range of 6-12
degrees for further simulation,
❖ The simulation was defined by tetrahedral mesh with size of 440mm.
❖ the results were analysed to select the optimal performing system.
Following these procedure, Angle of diffuser which presented with the best result was found to be 8
degrees. Graphs of Pressure coefficient vs position, control plots, particle lines was obtained with best
results shown at angle 8 degrees.

Abstract type3

This paper focuses on analysing the aerodynamic behaviour, stability and performance of formula
racing car with an underbody diffuser. Diffuser is designed according to the specification of our
formula car at different angles selected by examining the Ahmed body of our particular model. The
motive of this research is:

➢ To discover the best suitable angle for the diffuser at a fixed ride height.
➢ To minimise drag force for better efficiency of engine and better speed with satisfactory
downforce.

Computational attempt for examining the effect influenced on the generation of downforce and drag
force by design of the diffuser at different configuration angles ranging 6-12 degree at a fixed ride
height is achieved with performing CFD in ANSYS FLUENT. Stimulation of various models for their
contours and pressure plots for total pressure, static pressure and pressure coefficients is
performed. The study was executed in following stages-

❖ Best suitable range of optimal angle for the diffuser was analysed by running simulations on
the Ahmed body with reference to the ride height of our particular vehicle.
❖ Vehicle model was created for different angles of diffuser ranging for 6-12 degrees for further
simulation,
❖ The results were analysed to select the optimal performing system.
